If you're on Virgin and are having PSN or online games drop the connection, this is why: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Networking-and-WiFi/Play... Please feel free to kick-up a fuss on their Twitter and on the mainstream tech sites like The Verge, Engadget, etc. Even here, as a PlayStation-focused site.
Until Virgin fix it, you need to switch the DNS settings on your console and other devices, as this cannot be done globally on any Virgin Media Hub router. I've personally tested CloudFlare (1.1.1.1) and it restores full functionality, while also being the fastest and most private DNS provider out there according to independent tests. Interestingly, Sony's CDNs don't seem to be affected so game downloads and the like shouldn't be impacted, but general PSN sign-in can certainly be.
You could set an alternative provider as your Secondary DNS, either Google on 8.8.8.8 or OpenDNS on 208.67.222.222. You should be picky with your DNS provider, as they can glean a lot of personal information (not everything supports Secure DNS yet) and that's why I'd always recommend CloudFlare on computers and mobiles. Consoles aren't bad as you're only accessing certain domains in a very secure OS, so Google here would be a solid fallback option.
@LiamCroft - any chance of this being investigated by you guys and posted on the front page? It seems regional around the Midlands and it's affecting other Web traffic too, but PSN is a big one.
I actually had a few random disconnects since I bought PSN Extra. I'd go to download something on the catalogue and I'd be met with you've lost connection to PSN, pressing download again immediately would work.
@Zombiesfeelpain May not be the same issue, as others have much more consistent drops until their DNS settings are changed on the console (or the router if they use a third-party one that supports doing that).
They've now acknowledged the problem in various Twitter replies to customers.
