@Fight_Teza_Fight I am sure that this God of War will be a big seller - maybe even the biggest for the franchise. I get the impression that those (myself included) who were not 'fans' of the previous games are much more interested and likely to buy this

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

@BAMozzy
I could see it going either way. It certainly looks like it will pull in a new audience but that could be offset by what seems to be a fairly large number of ticked off fans of the franchise. I didn't start taking to it until I saw the GI interviews with Cory Barlog and Shannon Studstill. From a business perspective the move seems to make sense as PlayStation fans love the Naughty Dog style games but this is still a bit of a calculated risk.

This new one looks really cool, but I have a policy of starting game series with the earlier games first. Can anyone tell me the best way to play this series? Should I get the PS3 collection with 1 and 2? Should I get Ascension, Chains of Olympus, and Ghost of Sparta? If so, what's the best way of way of getting them (there seem to be a few different collections)? I already know I'd get the PS4 Remaster of 3.

@KratosMD Thanks. And which of the collections are worth getting? Or would I be better off waiting for a flash sale and just downloading them?

Just jump in this one. It's a bit of a reboot for the series with a complete change of tone and combat and i don't think you will be missing any story beats by not playing the previous games.

Read a couple previews and im tempted to pre-order this. Slight reservations regarding that the combat could get a bit repetitive, but that is hard to tell after only a couple of hours play.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

@KratosMD Is there any way to actually download Ghost of Sparta on PS3? I've been looking into it, but it looks like it's not for sale on PSN except as a PSP game, and the saga collection apparently has download codes that are expired by now. The only way I see to get it on PS3 is to buy the Collection Volume II as a physical copy.

@JohnnyShoulder I'd like to, but I always try to start with the first game in a series. It's sort of a rule of mine (don't always follow it though, as in the case with Wolfenstein).

@KratosMD Yeah, I looked pretty thoroughly through the God of War content, and the only thing I found for Ghost of Sparta was the PSP game. Looks like I'll be getting the Origins Collection and downloading the rest of the games at some point. But first...I'm planning on playing the Uncharted series. Kicking myself for missing the Nathan Drake Collection in the last flash sale.

Edit: Well, just my luck. I'm looking at the Playstation store on my computer, and it turns out Ghost of Sparta is a PS Plus exclusive. Why you gotta do this to me, Sony?

@KratosMD Weird? More like sleezy! Giving PS Plus members discounts and free games is perfectly fine, but actually locking an ENTIRE game behind it is just scummy, especially when the other game in the collection, Chains of Olympus, is available to anyone!

Amazon has copies of the Origins Collection though (what is called God of War Collection Volume II in Europe I believe). I'll get that and download the other games at some point. It's annoying though because I didn't want to download some and have others physical...I'm kind of OCD like that.

@KratosMD Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. I have no other option besides getting PS Plus, and that's not worth it to me. I just hope Sony does do a sale on GoW games next month.

@KratosMD Glad to hear that! I'm thinking about doing these games in chronological order like I did for the Metal Gear Solid series (going from MGSV to original MSX Metal Gear was tough, but I did it). I just wish the next flash sale would happen soon because I really want to start playing these games, but I don't want to buy them and then have them go on sale.

@Fight_Teza_Fight I thought that video was a parody at first. 😂 Until I finally figured out that the guy actually is Kratos’s mo-cap model. The game looks awesome, as does the fighting and movement, but it’s a bit of a power down to see Kratos is based on a pretty average looking guy punching dummies in his garage 😂
Not to mention it looks like Atreus appears to be modeled after a lady.

I am on countdown to try and finish God of War collection in vita and God of War 3 on Ps4 before the New God of War in April. I don't have ascension and not sure I will be able to finish the Psp games. Almost finished first God of War and then straight on to number 2.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

@Rudy_Manchego Beware of God of War fatigue. 😉

@Rudy_Manchego I think the new God of War will be quite different from any of its predecessors and not necessarily important to play the previous games. The game, in particular the combat is a lot slower and you can't jump either. Compared to the double jumping, with some platforming games of the past, the new 'Kratos' can't jump and requires Atreus to lower ladders for example (a bit like Ellie does for Joel) to get up into areas that 'old' Kratos could easily jump up. The new camera angle, close to the shoulder, also means that combat is different - relying on audio clues to inform you of imminent attacks from your 'blind spot' compared to the far off camera that let you see most (if not all) of the area in which your fight takes place.

How much of the Greek gods and 'story' of the predecessors are referenced in the new game, I don't know but it does seem more like a 'reboot' - although its obviously set after the events of previous games rather than a 'reboot' that takes us back to the beginning.

Point is though, the game-play looks quite different and may feel 'too' different, too slow and maybe too restrictive after playing all the predecessors so recently...
