The only, sole problem The Order has is being marketed in the wrong genre. If it was advertised as "interactive movie experience" or "cinematic adventure" everything would be fine and the whole world wouldn't be moaning about it. Think about it. Remember Phantasmagoria or Gabriel Knight anyone? Those were games in the aforementioned genre, long time ago in the 90's. CD Roms were really hip and an aspiring new game genre was those "looks like a movie" game. The gameplay was simple. It basicly played a badly compressed low resolution video until it stopped and waited for some action of the user, you took that action, the video continued. Hence, interactive movie. You didn't buy those games for huge content or endless replayability (you'd go with ULTIMA back then or probably Jagged Alliance) you bought them to be along for the ride, to marvel the awesome graphics and get enthralled by the game's world and atmosphere.
With the same mindset I got into The Order. And guess what? I love it. Don't expect it to be Gears, as everyone was saying. It's not. You have little to no choice about anything and most of the time you just keep pushing buttons to roll the story along. But the story is good. The settings and graphics obviously are amazing and yes the black bars DO add to the cinematic feel. So really, compare this more to an interactive movie than to a photorealistic action game. Too little content? Easy Platinum? Yeah, that's all true but being self-employed working at least 10 hours every day Im glad I finally have a game where I don't have to spend a million hours to grind for Platinum and get the story delivered in a nicely laid out arch of suspense which develops nicely.
So the final comparison, for me, is with an actual movie. Here I spend around 12 Euro to sit in a movie theatre and watch a 90 minute movie. So The Order is approx 7 hours long for most people. I like to take my time and I love the environments and the era so I'll probably be closer to 9. That's 540 minutes, divide that by a 90 minute movie I can watch 6 movies in the cinema in the time it takes to complete The Order. It would cost me 72 Euro to do so. Compared to that, the 59 Euro I paid for The Order on the PS-Store is completely reasonable and fine with me. If you play that example with BluRays and 90 minute movies it becomes even more clear that The Order is actually a good deal, since a BluRay close after release is about 17 Euro here.
People have no problem paying extra for 3D in theatres, or pay more for overly long or out-of-proportion-big-budget movies but paying for a game that looks absolutely excellent and is crafted with so much attention to detail, paying for that extra polish? No Sir. If The Order had about 40 hours of gameplay AND multiplayer with that high production values it would have taken surely 8 years to make and cost 90 Euro upwards. And you know what? I'd pay it.
I'm glad I can play The Order and support Ready at Dawn, unfortunately a sequel will most likely never come out because people - again - fail to appreciate something special when they see it because it's not like Call of Duty or Gears of War for a change.

That is all.
I can just /sign this.
Most reviews liked/loved the graphics, the cinematics, characters and the story. So for what the game was meant to be in the eyes of RAD, they did a great job. They didn't lie when they told us quality over quantity. This game is stable as hell and delivers great quality of what the developers had in mind. People just have the wrong idea of this game.
I also don'T understand that storm about replayability. For me it feels like wasted time, replaying a game. I played Dragon Age Inquisition and it was GREAT. But after finishing the story, I don't want to play it anymore, even though I could still do a lot in that game. Why? I feel like wasting time in that universe, since the story already ended. So I got no problems here with games like The Order. I hope RAD will bring out at least some DLCs for continuation of the story.
Half Life 1 & 2 had amazing story, interesting world and atmosphere and graphics that were mind blowing for its time and you know, the gameplay is among the best ever
HL 1 last about 10 hours and Half Life 2, 15 and you never stop playing the game, theres not a single cut scene
Both had multiplayer and mod support (infinite replayability)
And both costed 50-60 on release
You dont need to have 50% of cutscenesa and QTE to have a cinematic feel, you still can have great gameplay

I agree to all you said.
Still I think its not a valid comparison, I see The Order more like a movie that is a bit of a game and not the other way round, a game that looks like a movie. And yes thats awkward and wasn't advertised this way, hence the disappointment of so many people, but people also liked Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls. Granted, they offered more gametime, but even less actual gameplay.
It's really all a matter of tastes but giving it that bad reviews - in my opinion - is like giving an apple a bad review because its no banana. You know what I mean?

Top 5 Indies I'd recommend you try: #1 Lovecraft's Untold Stories, #2 Moonlighter, #3 Hotline Miami, #4 Inside, #5 Into the Breach.
Not trying to make a point here but curiously, everyone that played the order for himself and I asked about their opinion, really seem to enjoy it. In my book, it's a 9/10 but that's just me! Any other's in here that already played it care to share their opinion?

Its not that i dont agree with what you said, but i believe we should review games for what they are and not what they sre supposed to be
Its like if i make a movie with a story so great it puts evwry other movie ever and i market it like that (as the greatest story ever), but the acting is terrible the direction its so bad you cant see a damn thing, etc... Should that give me a free pass just because the story was terrific ? I dont think so
Reviews should be about the whole package and not about what the developers told you about.
For some reason I'm really tempted by this game. I've fallen for hype recently and have been burnt. I bought Dragon Age: Inquisition and just couldn't get into it (I loved Dragon Age Origins and love FFXIV and Skyrim so usually like RPG's), I bought Evil Within which I thought was just awful (i love the Resi series and even enjoyed Resi 5!!!) and I am playing Alien:Isolation which is so far pretty good. I'm really 50/50 about getting this game!!
I was a big fan of Heavy Rain and really enjoyed following the story and that was basically an entire games of QTE's. I'm not a fan of CoD type games and just fancy getting embroiled in a good story. Is this the right game for me???

Definitely sounds like it'll be worth a shot for you. £49 may be a bit too steep, though, so maybe wait for a good deal.

My initial sentiment was that Sony/Ready at Dawn should've pitched it differently to the market, the reception would have been warmer I guess.

Has ready at Dawn announced any DLC plans a announced. It seems this game would be ripe for some nice single player expansions. But given the ending that might be a bad idea now.
WAT!

The review document that came with our copy said that it wasn't even planning any more patches, so it's unlikely.
Went to the store with every intention to move my fully paid pre-order to something else, ended up going home with a copy of The Order instead. I have a feeling I'll regret this but my interest in the story and setting won out. Besides inFamous: Second Son didn't bring in the 9s and 10s across the board and that is easily my favorite in the series and a much better game than some gave it credit for while creaming themselves over CoD with mechs.

Hopefully you enjoy it. I think there are enough good ideas there to make this worth trying for yourself.
I've been on The Order all night.
Beyond the breathtaking visuals (online pictures and video really don't do it justice), excellent sound design, engaging music, stellar voice acting and the decent story; I'm really enjoying playing a stable, solid, rewarding game.
The presentation is doing an excellent job and drawing me in to the world.
The gameplay is full of tried and tested mechanics that just work and don't need a learning curve and the game world feels, for want of a better word, solid.
The environments really sell the setting. It's all very satisfying.
Other than looking like it does, it's not breaking any boundaries, but so what?!
RAD have produced a good game that looks stunning. I'd say I'm probably not far off the story's conclusion, which is a shame if only for the fact that I really like what they've done. But I'm looking forward to revisiting some of the game for trophy clean up.
At no point have I felt like I'm playing an interactive movie or something like that. The unfolding story through the game engine is a decent one, again, presented very well in a linear cover shooter. I'm glad it doesn't have an online component. It wouldn't be great, and the strive to fudge it in would probably ruin the attention given to the game itself. Personally, the online portions of Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed and even the Cybertron games felt shoehorned in and very much at odds with the excellent single player campaigns.
While I received The Order as a present, I'd be more than happy having purchased it for full retail price.
I would like to see a sequel, and I hope RAD get the chance to make one (or at least some Infamous First Light style dlc).
Could things be improved? Of course they could. So could every game (thing) ever.
Reviews are critiques. They are somewhat necessary in that they may help guide you away from something that really isn't for you. What they point out in the negative aspect of a game, in this case things like QTEs and formulaic structure are also necessary, but people seem to put a bit too much stock in them.
Games are inherently derivative for the most part, most games in any given genre could be accused of being little more than reskins of existing titles to some point. That doesn't make them bad games.

My opinion so far, but it's sad to see a game with this much attention to detail become so boring. I've heard it in a number if reviews, and I would have to agree, pacing is this games biggest flaw (not the gunplay nor the length, etc, which were satisfactory IMO).
The atmosphere and world may be commendable, but when your thinking to yourself, let's get done with this walking / NPC sequence, or checking your phone during a cut scene, it's not a good sign. The actual gameplay may have been early Uncharted esque, but it was still fun IMO.
With a greater empasis on playable scenes (and not walking around some abbey admiring dialogue), and some trimmed cutscenes, this could have been very solid.
Yeah agree with that, there were many scenes that I felt 'just get on with it' at the beginning of the game you're forced to walk? To some location that needs assistance but instead of using stairs he then decides to jump across building and out of windows... arriving at the location and taking a fairly indirect route all the while still walking we are then presented with the comment 'how did you get here so quick' their were no sarcastic undertones. Plain stupid. Shortly after a mini cutscene, oh, now I can run.
Well to be honest, I really enjoyed the dialogue, the accents, the wordcrafting, the world, the atmosphere... Not wanting to step on anyone's toes but I got a vibe like "people who are too impatient to read a book page by page will most likely not enjoy this". I'm a sucker for detail. Even if I didn't have to for the plat, I'd go in every corner and ready every little bit of Info, see everything there is. But thats just me. I had many conversations with different gamers about The Order and my initial argument still stands, that it's not really some kind of third person action game but something different and should have been advertised as such. Also, honestly, in this day and age I don't get people voting for any game a ZERO on metacritics and yelling "disappointment" in all colors of their language when it's NO effort at ALL to inform yourself about the product you're buying. So "I bought a game and hate it!" really shouldn't happen anymore today no?
