So a friend told me the digital only Playstation 5 was going to have worse specs than the version with the disk drive. Is this true? I tried to search it but couldn't find anything on the specs of the individual models.

Nope. Same specs, just missing a disc drive.

@Tocoslayer Your friend is probably thinking of the Xbox Series S, which has lesser specs than the Xbox Series X (at a price difference of $200, mind you!)

@Kidfried Not with those £70 games it’s not! If it was this gen then absolutely it would have been.

You can increase the specs yourself. When you unbox the console, don't put in a game yet. Put in a couple of slices of ham instead. Now you've increased the HAM. I don't know if it affects the RAM, but it's worth a try. It might unlock Knack 3 for all we know.

@nessisonett @Kidfried Not to mention being able to play Obsidian, Bethesda, etc. games at launch on Game Pass. In addition to the numerous other big releases that regularly release on there.

Which isn't to say the PS5 digital is a bad deal: I'm impressed it costs the same as a PS4, considering how much more powerful it is.

But, if you own a 1080p TV, I think the Series S is a better deal.

Can't trade in digital games though. Wasted money if you're only going to play it for a few weeks and the never again (as I do with certain games once I've completed the story)

Sony won't be cutting prices on Digital games as they need to make up for the losses they are taking on the hardware. If the games RRP is £70, it will be £70 as they don't have other stores selling the digital version for £65 or £60 like Physical stores will. Physical stores can also cut the costs by making money on used sales instead - bring you in with 'lower' prices, sell you a few 'extra' used games to offset the drop in profit margins that competition brings - Online retailers too are in competition so prices will drop quicker over time - especially if they aren't selling as fast as hoped. Then of course there is also ebay, Music Magpie etc too if the prices aren't dropping quick enough for you...

There is a reason Sony and MS can sell All digital consoles much cheaper than the cost manufacturing and parts cost would indicate. That $30-35 difference in manufacturing cost shouldn't be $100 difference at retail but because you are locked into Sony's store meaning EVERYTHING you buy is maximum profits to Sony will enable them to take a bigger loss and could end up subsidising the loss on the Disc based units before they start returning a profit if they sell enough digital consoles and new games. Digital games don't have distribution, wholesaler, manufacturing and printing costs to factor in. Retailers don't buy from a Publisher, a Wholesaler buys them and then sells them to stores - often cheaper if the stores are ordering in much larger quantity which is why stores like Amazon can sell cheaper than a small retail chain because they buy in much larger quantity.

However, that's the price you pay for a bit of extra convenience...

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
