Finally managed to get a disc drive for the PS5 Pro at a somewhat reasonable price (~150€ while most places still have them at around 200) so I'll be going back to SW Outlaws and then starting Alan Wake 2.
Gonna gather the bots they added post-launch to Astro first though.

@Th3solution what if you assign parry to circle? Then you'd be a parry God as you instinctively try to roll away to safety like a little scared armadillo 😁

Think about it. It might be a psychological thing because a parry feels more dangerous to attempt, but it's still just hitting a button at the right time which applies to dodge roll, too, right?

@Ravix @Th3solution I’m no biologist but an armadillo can presumably parry and dodge roll simultaneously?

@Jimmer-jammer it is the ultimate souls protagonist Untitled

@Ravix 😂 Fight for your right to sleep half the day away against the villainous Charango Fandango in an introspective, disease spreading adventure. Eat enough insects to unleash your inner Glyptodont, stopping the party for good and becoming ruler of the dreamscape.

Don’t try to make sense of it. 😅

But seriously, I did think about that too and I do admit it’s largely psychological. I did some soul searching about my aversion to parrying and I think I need to get over my psychological barrier and realize I’m just approaching it too instinctively and reactionary. It could end up being similar to the epiphany I had when someone gave me the simple advice for Souls games that you often need to avoid your instinct to dodge away from an attack and you should usually roll into the attack. The hit boxes are smaller closer to the enemy and your I-frames will protect you, and then you’re right beside the enemy ready to deal a follow up blow. Starting to do that was a game changer for novice Bloodborne run.

But I do have some logic behind my disdain for the parry — I think part of the difference to me is the timing always seems to be more strict for a parry versus a dodge. Some of that is dependent on the design of the particular game, and some of it is the physics of it whereby if a parry is mistimed, then you’re still physically located (well, virtually) right in the line of fire or slash and will 100% take a hit. In a dodge, if you mistime, then your location has also changed so the blow might still miss you, depending. So it feels more generous from an execution standpoint. Also, mix in the fact that for some reason, games always make parrying situational, in the sense certain enemies or certain enemy attacks are non-parryable (and often non-blockable, which is also why I don’t tend to rely on a blocking or shielding function), so there’s a chance that all your muscle memory and training to watch for the parry windows will be for naught on a certain boss or a certain enemy’s special attack. Dodge is almost always an option, no matter the attack. Undodgeable attacks aren’t usually a thing. It’s more rare to run into anything that can’t be dodged and has to be parried but there’s a lot of times when an attack can’t be parried and has to be dodged. At least in the FromSoft games I-frames are truly “invincible” frames. I know games usually try to telegraph when a non-parryable attack is coming by making a little blue glimmer on the sword right before they swing it or something like that, but I would just rather get my dodges really sound and then I don’t have to always be looking for the little flash of an indicator telling me which defensive maneuver to do.

Also, it feels like often a parry timing window varies depending on the incoming attack, so for example if the sword swing is coming at you vertically then you need to hit the parry button right when the downward motion initiates, but when the sword swing is a horizontal, then you have to time it differently because the animation is longer, etc. Dodging is similar but the I-frames are predictable at least and don’t change for your character.

A final thought about parries that I had the other day:
People complain about QTE’s, but parrying is just a fancier form of a QTE. At a certain visual cue, you are supposed to press a certain button quickly in a short time frame. It’s just that the button you are to press isn’t usually displayed on the screen and requires you to recognize the prompt by watching an attack animation. I guess one could say the same thing about dodging being also a form of QTE, but in my mind, you’re controlling which way the character dodges and it feels more like your control is in real-time and it’s a natural reaction, and it can be done anytime on the battlefield versus waiting for the exact moment that the enemy swings their arms and then simply pressing a button within a specified time before in comes in contact.
🤷🏻‍♂️

I think I might be parry-phobic.

@Jimmer-jammer Actually, an armadillo has such a high defensive armor value that it doesn’t need to parry! Its offensive repertoire is quite limited though — Needs more points in strength and endurance

Just got the new Dragon Age today for $25 in the States. I enjoyed the previous ones and while the consensus seems to be the new one isn't as good, seems about the right price for it.

@graymamba Both games that I’ve had a curious eye on. I’ve never played a Warhammer game, and honestly know nothing about the franchise, but Space Marine 2 seems to be fine to consume on its own. Similar with Veilguard I guess, but I think there’s more connective tissue there linking to the prior games, so I’ve wondered if I’m better off trying to go back to Inquisition first. The game is a conundrum, for sure. EA isn’t doing it any favors by moaning about how big of a failure it’s been, along with discounting the game already. Many of the reviews and overall fan buzz has actually been really positive. So many mixed messages about it.

Either way, I’m fairly buried right now and so I’ll probably hold off. I need to save room for a possible Ghost of Yotei or Death Stranding 2 purchase. 😅

@Th3solution yeah I’m in no rush to play either myself (particularly not Veilguard as I wasn’t to play through the previous three first) but at under £30 each, I just couldn’t say no really.

… and yeah I already think I’ll be picking up Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 at release. Something @Ravix said a few weeks ago struck a bit of a chord with me. In this era of the industry seemingly crumbling before our eyes (a minor exaggeration) we really should be buying the games that excites as gamers at full price to do our admittedly small part in fully-funding the facets of the gaming we individually get the most from.

@graymamba I straddle a fine line of trying to support games and devs I like by buying at release vs. trying to keep my backlog controlled and keeping a reasonable personal budget. I do agree with you and Rav though and have typically tried to throw support behind the smaller projects and studios that I think might need it more, having bought at release the likes of Dreams, Concrete Genie, and Gravity Rush 2. 😂 But clearly my support didn’t help enough. For the big blockbuster titles I’m less prone to throw support behind them if I figure they will sell just fine on their own, and I’ll often wait for the inevitable discounts, unless I plan to play them immediately.

I used to be better about getting games at launch but I am at a place in my gaming where I have just been buying 2-3 new releases per year and getting about another 4-6 older releases for cheaper. My most recent launch window purchases have been Spidey 2, FFXVI, Balatro, Hogwarts Legacy, GT7 and I played them all at release. The only recent launch purchase I’ve made and didn’t play right away (and still haven’t 😅) is Baldur’s Gate 3.

Honestly, I do miss the days where I’d pre-order a physical copy of a game from GameStop and pick it up at a midnight launch event and it would usually come with a pre-order bonus, be it an exclusive skin or weapon, some gaming merch or a special steelbook cover.

The move toward digital, along with the general explosion of the number of game releases has extinguished the launch event type of hype. Also, the fact that games release in broken states and are often not really ready for full enjoyment until a couple months after launch.

I went a bit crazy this year so far with purchases...

Last year I made a resolution to not buy ANY games at all and actually stuck to it!

So far this year I've bought -

Space Marine 2
Silent Hill 2 remake
System Shock
Hitman 3/WOA
XII remake
Devil May Cry HD collection
Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition
Devil May Cry Special Edition
DMC reboot
Trepang2
Little Nightmares Complete Edition (actually forgot I'd bought this one!)

I have made £70 back from selling games as well and got £20 off a purchase for using PayPal credit so I think I haven't actually spent too much!

Eternal Strands - had an absolute blast with this. Mike Laidlaws' (ex Bioware) latest game. It's not a AAA open world but definitely a high quality AA. With Dishonored vibes gxf wise and hints of Shadow of the Colossus, well maybe more than a hint . It's really quite an amazing new IP from a freshly baked studio.

@graymamba Moons of Madness is a surprisingly good cosmic horror game with a decent story and is only a few hours long, well worth a playthrough, an easy Plat too.

If you don't like it, don't play it, and shut yo damn mouth
