@QualityGeezer I too just recently finished it and the platinum.
Really enjoyed the game and surprised how polished it was, no issues at all.
I did enjoy the calm nature of the game, enjoyed the sailing and general relaxed vibe. I did think the whole possession business was a little under-utilised and I used it most during the collectathon phase.
@CaptD yeah it was almost redundant in the sense I think you could have easily done the game without that mechanic which is a shame as that was how the game was sold. Definitely something too improve on
@QualityGeezer I didn't, I really enjoyed what I played of it but for all the comparisons to botw for the way you explore and engage with your map, it still felt like an older open world game in structure. It got a bit samey for me. You can feel the devs love for New Caledonia pouring out of this game though, shouts out to them for showcasing some of the culture and beliefs of folks there. The vibes in this game are probably its strongest attribute.
I finished it, but did not go for the platinum. In the first three chapters I encountered a few bugs, including my raft falling through the ocean surface and getting stuck on the bottom during a race. Overall, I liked the experience. The story and unique setting more than made up for a few technical shortcomings.
Once I unlocked all the movement options an enough stamina points the traversal was really fun. Launching yourself of a palm three, rolling down a slope as a rock, soul jumping into a seagull, gliding down to the ocean to soul jump into a dolphin, etc. I challenged myself to see how far I could go. For me that's one of Tchia's biggest selling points.
The combat and puzzle solving on the other hand felt a bit underutilized. They have got something special with the puzzles and the soul jumping ability. I would have loved to see more of it. All in all, Tchia is a fun and creative game and I'm glad that I finished it for Game Club.
Good day to one and all, I hope everyone is having a splendid Sunday. Looks like we got ourselves a standoff as the top two games from the vote are tied!
The two games making like a Sergio Leone picture are Stray and Toy Story 2. So gang, cast your votes for your preferred title between now and Friday please and with a bit of luck weāll have an outright winner.
@AgentCooper I'm a cheapskate, I've only got extra so TS2 off the table for me. I've played Stray before and enjoyed it so will hopefully jump back in next month.
I might have to just spectate from the sidelines this month, so Iāll abstain from voting. Iām caught in the vortex of a couple other games. If my own schedule opens up then I wonāt rule out joining in, but I donāt want to influence the outcome in case it doesnāt.
āāāā
On a separate but related note, I spent another 4-5 hours with Tchia this weekend and still enjoying it. Iām not exactly sure how far I am from the end but probably about 75% complete. I donāt think Iām going to go for the platinum ā not because I wouldnāt enjoy it but because of the aforementioned other games to get to. Iād hoped to complete the game before the weekend closed because weekday game time is much less for me, but I didnāt quite get there. Thereās a fair chance Iāll hit the finish line before end of the month though, although it might end up a little over the mark.
As far as updated thoughts or discussion points about the game, I agree with a lot of whatās been said. Itās been a real joy to play, overall. The further I am getting into the story I do feel a little strangely about the swinging tone of the game though.
We have the infamous chicken incident, but even more disturbing to me is a scene where the villain snatches a baby from its parents and then swallows it! And the whole backstory of the infant sacrifice of the twin brother ā although the incident wasnāt shown in detail, the idea and description of that is quite unsettling. Similarly thereās implications of torment and manhandling of the parents and prisoners (again, off-screen but still distressing). The art design and tone is so innocent and cute that Iām emotionally confused sometimes.
Of course conflict is the essence of drama, so itās important to create villains that a player strongly roots against and is motivated to beat. Nevertheless, if the heinous acts of the antagonist occur in ways that arenāt congruent with the style and spirit of the rest of the world then it all comes across a little disingenuous.
Again, I think thereās a lighthearted intent to the whole thing, and so perhaps Iām reading too much into it. I suppose if one really thought about the villainous acts of Bowser or Dr. Cortex then we might have the same issue. But Iām unaware of another game where a baby was eaten, a childrenās game or otherwise. Itās strange because the game seems to specifically make most of the enemies non-human fantastical beings made of fabric so burning them feels less violent, so itās at odds with the treatment of the protagonists.
Again, the above story-beat had a āshock-humorā type of feel to it, similar to the chicken, so maybe itās a cultural thing that Iām misreading.
It sounds like Iām being critical of the game but thatās merely one small thing that has stood out to me as Iāve progressed into it. Otherwise I continue to enjoy the moment to moment gameplay and the overall vibe in general.
āWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.ā
@Th3solution I fully agree. The chicken scene, I could look past. Not great, not terrible either. But in the scene with the baby, I really felt a disconnect with the game (wtf, did that really just happen?) It was not the depiction itself, but it just really felt out of place considering the overall tone and style of the game. I get that it is probably derived from local myths or folk tales, but I canāt imagine there are no other ways to tell and depict this. Same for all the islanders who got blown to pieces in the prison. When you think about it, yes, dr Cortex conducted live experiments on Crash Bandicoot and god knows what Bowser does to Peach, but that is only circumstantial and not in your face. All in all, not the end of the world and it did not hinder my enjoyment of the game. It was just weird.
@AgentCooper I will vote for stray actually as after reading some of the comments it appears not everyone has access to toy story 2 so doesn't seem fair too pick a game that excludes people from a game club. Might be something too consider going forward as it's only a small group of us atm in the club but may put people off joining us if we pick premium games if people don't have access to it for whatever reason. I have premium but appreciate alot don't for various reasons and I just feel for the club to grow we need to be as inclusive as we can so maybe games on extra only?
@QualityGeezer I wholeheartedly agree, sticking to Essential/Extra is probably preferable. To be fair i think the other titles are but if I remember correctly I think there was some discussion that TS2 could be picked up fairly cheaply outside of a sub. It is something i would like to avoid all together in future though. Iām always open to suggestions of ways we can grow and improve the club so thank you for your feedback.
Weāre playing The Plucky Squire this month, join us!
@AgentCooper no problem mate we are only a month in and I don't want it too fall apart because say only 3 of us have premium and everyone else is excluded. It may be cheap outside a sub but it's hard to judge an individual's circumstances so some may not be able to buy the game
