@ralphdibny It’s a really bad Earthbound pun. Ness is Onett (the starting town), as in Ness is on it. Truly dire. Might just pretend it’s Nessi sonnet and I write really bad poetry about the Loch Ness Monster. Do I compare thee to a green reptile?

@ralphdibny Ness is O Nett?

Your gif looks like when Crash jumps on a springy crate!

I've started this earlier, done the race and took Paulie to the brothel. I've had my fair share of glitches, stuff like cars flashing and someone doing their best The Thing impression. But apart from that I am liking it. Think I needed something like this after playing couple of more open ended games.

@nessisonett ehh I weren't far off. Combine a couple of my suggestions. I think if I knew any more about Earthbound then I might have actually got it on the money! I only know about Ness and Lucas because they are characters in smash Bros.

Prehistoric green scaly reptile or,
Guttering sticking out of the water
Fools to the left, fools to the right, Scotch hoax
Has given us all a big fright.... Night folks!

I tried my hardest at iambic pentameter but I give up now!

@JohnnyShoulder haha yeah, could be any old platformer with springs to be honest but the crate certainly leans toward crash bandicoot!!

I think I quite like the glitches. Its certainly rough around the edges especially considering the game looks really good so the glitches stick out more I guess. Nice one on making some decent progress anyway!

See ya!

@ralphdibny Yeah I think I've gotten used to having them in games tbh, mostly from playing Cyberpunk 2077 lol.

The race was fantastic I thought, especially how it all sounded. My car felt like it it was gonna explode with all the whining and groaning it was making. I must have been have been putting the car through its paces.

Just seen that the sequel is on offer on PSN for about 8 quid until the 18/8. Is that the one that was totally broken when it released? I did play it on 360 and remember it gave me a craving for cheese and ham sarnies! 😂 I got Mafia 3 from PS Plus so that would complete the trilogy.

Been following along and I have been curious to see how people like this game. I’ll have it on my radar now since it appears to be well liked across the board.
But yeah — the word on the street about Mafia 2 is unfortunate. Like Johnny alluded to, isn’t it a bit broken and just all around lousy game? Shame as Mafia 3 is also well regarded and I’m not sure my obsessive nature will allow me to only play 1 and 3, especially if the narrative is all related.

Of course now that I think about it, I’ve done it before in other series — Bioshock I skipped the middle entry, I may end up skipping some middle entry Resident Evils, I still haven’t played Mass Effect 1, etc, etc. So how critical is the middle entry of Mafia toward the whole trilogy experience?

@JohnnyShoulder ahh sweet, glad you enjoyed the race! I think I was simultaneously filled with dread and fear because of my experience with the original so I don't think I could take it all in. Having said that, the music was funny because it reminded me of like a really really old Disney cartoon/film. Lots of the score in this game seems out of place to me. It's good but it is quite noticeable

Also I'm not sure how broken Mafia 2 is now. Surely they must have done patches for it. I seem to remember somebody saying that it wasn't as had as the press coverage made out

@JohnnyShoulder @Th3solution Mafia II seems to be the most critically acclaimed when it first released but from what my mum played of it, it’s still a bit dodgy in the frame-rate department. It also just feels quite dated, very very PS3. A bit like GTA IV in that respect, it does some cool stuff for the time but has been eclipsed over the years. Probably worth a play for the story.

@Th3solution I'm not sure if Mafia 2 is a lousy game as I seem to remember enjoying my time with it when I played it on 360.

As for the continuation from 2 to 3, I'm not so sure but 3 is set a good number of years after 2, so I imagine there will only be a few subtle references to the previous games.

Just finished the game, woop! It was good! Classic difficulty but with aim assist on after that turret section.

Don't think I have much else to say really. It's funny how so many people end up looking like Vito Corleone though lol. Sergio Morello, the brother of the rival don really looked like him even if his voice didn't match at all. Also in the epilogue Tommy Angelo ends up looking remarkably like him in slightly different ways too.

Also everytime I think of Tommy Angelo, it makes me think of Matt D'Angelo who played Dean-o Wickes in EastEnders and that guy in the last series or 2 of Hustle.

It's interesting how many people opted for the single release of Mafia. Whenever I've looked, the single release was around £20 and the Trilogy was £28-30. I never felt like the additional games were a bad deal for the extra money even if I already have 3 from Plus

@RogerRoger hmmm not sure. Looking at that free ride mode it seems like there's a bit more to it than just collectible mopping. Perhaps a more traditional GTA-like experience. I'm definitely going to have a go at it and see how far I get.

What was your opinion on the music in this game? Both the radio tracks and the main score?

See ya!

ralphdibny

@RogerRoger ahh cool cheers, I wanted to hear some thoughts from someone more discerning of music in general! I'm normally just like "that's good", "that's bad", "that fits" and "that doesn't" lol.

A couple news reports really stood out to me, particularly the ones about the lead up to world war 2 with the annexation of (I think) Czechoslovakia by the Nazis and ultimately whether America would involve itself in the impending war in Europe. Its certainly an interesting perspective to get on it.

So in free ride, there's a letter on the pool table in salieri's bar that leads you to a phonebooth out west of Little Italy. This is the first of 12 or so missions available in Free Ride that kind of follow this pattern. Find a letter in Salieri's, find a phone booth, do a mission. I think there is a particular mission that includes UFOs. Also, if you drive a taxi around, then you can pick up fares. I'm not sure if there's a progressional structure to this but I believe there might be. I think you can do more races at the track too, that is if you are a masochist 😅. I found this out when I was looking up the mode online, I've only actually had a go at the first mission and it's pretty tough. Might have another go, not sure.

I definitely want to see some UFOs though!

See ya!

For those wondering about Mafia 2 - I haven't played the remaster (although I am aware of its issues), but I have played it twice on 360 and it's one of my favourite games of all time. Sure, it's not breaking any new ground, but the location, characters, gunplay, mission variety and general period setting really make the game stand out in my opinion. Plus it doesn't outstay it's welcome, clocking in at around 12-14 hours. Great story and some memorable set pieces. I would recommend it to anyone, even if you only play it on the older machines. Plus, the soundtrack is outstanding.

The harbour level on Classic is an absolute mess. Some of the worst checkpointing I’ve ever seen.

It’s looking like we’re probably going to finish before the end of this month so it’s back to thinking about which game to play. Can’t say I have too many ideas about games so hopefully you all can think of something!

Some quick ones I’ve seen just from my library and PS Now:

Bioshock 2 or Uncharted The Lost Legacy (they’re shooty games and we’ve played a few of them recently)
Darksiders (don’t know if it’s any good or how long it is)
Shadow of the Colossus
Sonic Mania
Until Dawn
Ghostrunner, SUPERHOT or Streets of Rage 4 (they’re on PS Now)

@Ralizah It’s at least a bit different, Mafia and Doom Eternal are both shooters so I’d want to shake it up a bit like we did with Subnautica. It’s a shame a lot of my backlog is for retro games though or I’d sneakily vote them in here 😂😂
