Elden Ring getting best direction is such a joke. Lmfao. Sure Goty is fine, but directing what? I it has little to zero story. (I say this having put hundred plus hours into Elden Ring).
Directing overtime hours?
GOW should have won best direction. Period
I was saying it. Elden Ring should win GOTY but I thought Ragnarok would mainstream its way in. Elden Ring was just so much better as a game. It was the first time in a long time where I thought "this is just a pure game". It also deserves Best Direction. Pushing the Souls style successfully into a massive world and telling a deep story in a subtle way through interactions with NPCs, gear descriptions etc. is so much more organic than the movie style narrative of Ragnarok (which fell short of what 2018 gave us).
Well deserved From and bring on AC 6.
Stray winning best indie was a joke. ANY of the other choices would have been better. (Tunic would have been my choice)
Christopher Judge's acceptance speech was awesome!
Love that Elden Ring won. I had much more fun with it than any other this year - only game I couldn’t put the controller down once I grabbed it.
@KundaliniRising333 I mean, game direction is about a lot more than just story.
@LiamCroft I know, I know. But man GOW deserved this award. It felt like they had to hand them this award to justify Goty. Because if GOW had swept every other category but didn't get Goty it would make little sense.
But I hear ya man, I hear ya.
Elden Ring is highly overrated, so no surprise it won.
God of Awards once more, people over the internet can say as many ***** as they want about Sony but they have some of the most badass developers in the world and they deserve all the recognition.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Nepp67 I loved Elden Ring, and these are games. Sharing an opinion isn't butt hurt.
I'm not such A fan boy to think Elden Ring had a cohesive story or narrative experience. Regardless of playing and loving every souls like From the studio. STORY though, cmon....
Each to their own. I loved both games
God of War Ragnarok would have been my choice for GotY.
Bill Clinton was the true winner
@Mr_Gamecube No need to be salty that God of War: Ragnarok won Best Music over Xenoblade or Forbidden West. Saying that you're glad that it lost Game of the Year is honestly disrespectful.
I'm happy for Elden Ring winning GOTY even though Ragnarok was a close second.
Soo I'm guessing the people choosing the winners weren't huge fans of Horizon 2, kind of seems like it wasn't even allowed to enter the building!
Congratulation to reformed orthodox rabbi Bill Clinton! Thank you everybody!
@KundaliniRising333 "Sharing an opinion isn't butthurt" You're clearly trying to dodge the very obvious point I was making. "Elden Ring has little to zero story"
It's fine if you don't like the game but don't be so butthurt cause your favorite game didn't win that you have to be spitting out lies.
@KAIRU I mean, glitched quest lines, bugs, poor balancing in character builds, reused bosses, lazy copy pasted endings and worse boss design than the last 3 Souls games? It was good for what it was but I wouldn't call it the best. It definitely deserved to be nominated in all it's categories though
A shame Horizon Forbidden West didn't win anything. Yes, I know it had no chance of winning Game of the Year even though it's my personal choice, but a technical award or two maybe. It's a almost a joke that it didn't win for Best Audio and Best Art Direction. The 3D audio is amongst the best I've heard, and yes better than Raganrok's. The Art Direction is also fantastic, as it's probably the best looking game of this generation so far.
In the end, oh well as these awards are honestly meaningless at the end of the day, but I still do think it deserved to win both categories instead of them just picking the same two games for so many categories even if they don't deserve them all.
Praise to the glory of Elden Ring!
I didn't play Elden Ring yet but it was GOTY in gaming community so its only fair to win game awards too.
Elden Ring definitely deserves all those awards especially GOTY & Art Direction. Such a hard game to put down.
@KilloWertz Yeah I thought they could've at least giving Game Direction to HFW. Not Art direction though, because with that FromSoftware are easily capable of winning. PS games can win Graphical Showcase but when it's Art direction, it's not about shiny graphics.
Nice to see Stray get recognition- clearly the best indie with a good style and it was something original
personally i found forbidden west a massive disappointment
That borefest Zelda is definitely not most wanted.
The game awards can’t be taken seriously anymore horizon winning nothing and Elden ring winning game of year award is bullcrap.
@KundaliniRising333 Got to love it when people comment on things they know nothing about. Game direction and directing in general is more then just story, maybe look it up instead of being Mr Fanboy.
@4kgk2 Horizon should count itself lucky it even got nominated.
God of War: Ragnarok should have won GOTY imo, but I'm not gonna dwell on it or whine.
I am happy for Stray though, they definitely deserved winning the Best Indie award.
Congratulations to all the winners, especially Elden Ring for scooping the top prize. Well deserved
Am I the only one that thinks there was nothing revolutionary about both GOW and Elden Ring unlike how some people describe them? Yes, they both are great games but super similar to their previous games (GOW 2018 and Dark Souls Series).
Also I don't know how some people call Elden Ring a perfect game when it has so many issues in different parts like, terrible side quests, super repetitive caves/catacombs, low quality boss fights compared to previous games (copy pasted boss fights, many gank bosses, most bosses have the same delayed attacks, most bosses have endless combos), terrible weapon damage balance (specially during the launch), mediocre OST compared to previous games, etc.
Anyway, congrats to From Software, imo ER was definitely the best game that came out this year
@KundaliniRising333 it sounds like you're confused re: best direction as you keep focusing on just story. Story = Narrative and GoW:R rightly won that award
@KundaliniRising333 considering The Last of Us part 2 won for best direction I think it’s obvious the game awards just don’t care at all.
Sifu not winning anything is a travesty.
I wasn't surprised by Horizon Zero Dawn winning no awards. It is an average game at best. It does nothing objectively better than Elden Ring or Ragnarok.
Sort of surprised Splatoon 3 beat out Modern Warfare 2 for best MP and Dead Space didn’t win most anticipated, but whatever - it’s just video games…..
God of War Ragnarok and Elden Ring come out in the same year and we're arguing over which is better. Good lord. They're both incredible, both push things forward in different ways and both were an absolute joy to play. You can't really compare which is "better" as it's so subjective.
@LifeGirl well it wasn't going to win any awards this year because it came out in 2017
Horizons snub has brought me joy.
@Ah-Void I don’t think anyone credible has called Elden Ring, or any game perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect game… apart from Game Boy Tetris 😂
@KundaliniRising333 Game Direction has little to do with story and plot, that is the Best Narrative award which GoW: R won. According to TGAs Best Game Direction is “AWARDED FOR OUTSTANDING CREATIVE VISION AND INNOVATION IN GAME DIRECTION AND DESIGN.” I think it’s hard to argue Elden Ring isn’t worthy of that
Really happy for Stray - my personal GOTY.
Really enjoyed game awards this year, alot of fun to watch. Think ragnarock should of got game of the year, was one of the few games that always made me want more when putting the controller down.
(Before people say im a buthurt fan boy I can see why elden ring won as is a great game just not for me personally)
@Nepp67 Why so aggro? What are you hoping to achieve?
Its clear his comments were made with a misunderstanding that 'direction' equated to 'story', and if that were the case then he'd have a point.
Surely its better to simply point out that direction is not story and move on...
Delighted that Elden Ring got the nod, but not suprised.
I love GOW Rangorok, and I also really loved HFW (the best looking open world yet), but Elden Ring was a genre changing game for many reasons, and whilst I've played games like GOW (2018) and HFW (2017), I've never played a game like Elden Ring before.
@Would_you_kindly Lol. That was a silly mix up of mine. It does speak to where the newest game lives in my mind though.
Elden Ring deservedly won, but those saying it wasn't close are very wrong. God of war Ragnarok was also a masterpiece and both were THE games to play this year.
Glad ER won even tho GOW was my goty.
I got mad HFW didn't win art direction or sound design.
Based. Great that a new a IP is awarded as GOTY and Direction over an expansion or version 1.5 of the exact same old game.
Congrats to elden ring for winning game of the year.it was between elden ring and god of war ragnarok.if any game would beat god of war ragnarok its elden ring.elden ring and god of war ragnarok is 2 of the best games ever made.word up son
@Mr_Gamecube For me it's a joke to even put xenoblade chronicles 3 and gow ragnarok in the same sentence. Mind the gap.
This guy gets it. Word up son.
I can't believe Genshin stole the fan award by buying votes with free items. Should have been Sonic smdh.
@Arisen I mean, every single nominee in the Score category was more deserving than GoW. 😂 Ragnarok was great, and probably should've won GotY, but it had no business winning best score against that competition
Excuse me while I put my tinfoil hat on for a second but I can't help but find it interesting that both of Pushsquare's sister sites (Nintendolife and PureXbox) published a separate article headlining that Elden Ring won game of the year but Pushsquare itself did not.
Surely any game winning game of the year is news worthy no? 🤔
No mention of Plague Tale. So sad it didnt win anything
Elden Ring definitely deserved GOTY. It was an absolute masterpiece. I am actually playing HFW right now and I think it is much better than the first, although looking at the map and markers is quite daunting with all the undiscovered locations. It is quite Ubisoft like. With that being said, the graphics and music are absolutely phenomenal and the game is a lot of fun despite a lot of grind. I think HFW should have won something.
@Milktastrophe yup
@Gunnerzaurus come on , are you serious right now. I've been playing Fromsoft games and the many souls like games to come thereafter since Kings Field 1 on the Playstation. I adore these games for the challenge and demand they conjure. Yet I am not going to sit here and pretend vague dialogue and item descriptions and random notes and names account for meaningful story or narrative direction.
If you want to believe that those things being drip-fed to you is some sort of lovely pleasing thing where the developer intended for an entire internet community to go on a scavenger hunt through all of this minor lore to come up with a story themselves then have at it I'm happy for you but I think that's b*******. There is no way that these little musings and dialogue and lore are anywhere near equal to the amount of time and effort it takes to write and direct and then hire actors to act out in a meaningful way a true narrative story experience. They don't even compare. The lore in souls games is cute and fun to try and make sense of, I get it,... but I don't play it for the story because I know God damn well there is next to none of such a thing. And from soft and all the other souls games know it, that's why each and every game aside from maybe like Sekiro have copy and pasted the exact same shallow framework of lore where you're some tarnished, cursed undead, slayer of demons, cinder,... blah blah blah, who can live die and repeat, it's just to feed the gameplay loop for and have it make shallow sense it is not a genuine well thought out and intricate story period.
I put over 100 hours into Elden ring and platin event because it was a fun game to play. The 100s of hours I've put in every other from soft title and hundreds in other Souls like games; I put in to them because of that fun gameplay Loop not at all pretending that they have any real aspect resembling a cohesive story.
I will however admit that I kind of misunderstood or just had a different interpretation of what the best Direction award was for this and it really is more suited for narrative and that category. As far as direction if you factor in the fact that Elden went with an open WORLD DESIGN FOCUSED ON TRUE EXPLORATION. That aspect coupled into like a design perspective of Direction I think yeah absolutely elden ring was groundbreaking if for nothing else then to actually make a game that you play rather than map icon chasing and being handheld the entire way.
@KundaliniRising333
Sorry but a game with constant slow walking/ squeeze through tight spaces/crawling/npc's backseating don't deserve best direction.
I'm half way through stray l, maybe it has an amazing second half but as it stands, to put it ahead of immortality, tunic or neon white is madness. Thought these awards were voted for by games media outlets.
2 hours into Ragnarok and really enjoying it. So obviously can see the praise. But Horizon only gets praise because its first party. The Horizon games are polished but otherwise they are the most 7 out of 10 games that ever 7 out of 10’d. They are also basically glorified Ubisoft games.
