Grand Theft Auto V may be all the rage right now, but we still think that Sleeping Dogs is a stronger game in places. The controls, for starters, aren’t an outright mess, while the combat – be it melee or weapon-based – is much better in United Front Games’ release. As such, it’s pretty exciting to learn that the Canadian studio is working on a follow-up of sorts.
The developer’s being outrageously cagey at the moment, but it has confirmed that it’s constructing a title called Triad Wars, which is set in the same universe as last year’s sandbox hit. “It’s something that we’ve wanted to do for ages, and we’re very happy to be working with Square Enix again – but that’s all that we can give you for the time being,” the company noted on its website.
While this is obviously great news, we’re wary of the wording in the post. The text doesn’t explicitly state that the game is a sequel, and neither does it note that it’s a console release. Square Enix has been pushing into the mobile market hard of late, so this could easily end up being a smartphone spin-off. We’ll find out in 2014, when the firm has promised to uncover exactly what it’s got in store.

I can't wait to running spin-kick someone in the face.
This will be a day one purchase for me.
In terms of gameplay/controls Sleep Dogs is probably my favorite open world game ever.
Taking out a group of guys using only melee and environment attacks was just soooo satisfying.
@Epic LOL! that's classic
First Injustice for Vita, now this. Great news day. This will be an absolute day one buy.
Day one!!! I feel this may be the best open world game this gen and has a chance to be a great future franchise for square enix. I've been playing since true crime L.A. Hated true crime N.Y. .. This was a great pick up by square enix they did a great job with the franchise and I hope to see sleeping dog titles for years and years...... And years to come.
i love sleeping dogs cant wait for this!
They have a huge opportunity to be the first next generation GTA-esque title. The only danger is Rockstar porting GTA5 to the PS4. I'm still not convinced that this is an actual sequel, though. The wording in the blog post is very, very ambiguous.
@get2sammyb - I'm not sure it is going to be a sequel either but as long as it's set in the "Sleeping Dogs Universe" and has the same combat my body is ready!
I will be a bit sad if you don't play as Wei Shen though.
@get2sammyb It sounds like a MMO, dunno if thats just me. But this and that Deus Ex announcement come off as MMOey, that "universe" wording is what sets that off.
I wonder why Square Enix always pre-announce stuff? Especially to the "commercial failures"?
Wasn't Sleeping Dogs a commercial failer in Square Enix eyes?
@artemisthemp - I'm pretty sure every game is a commercial failer in Square Enix eyes.
I'd love to see what they can do with a ...what was it, 20-fold increase in horses? I seriously hated the driving in SD. It felt like they ran out of space to me and didn't care. More attention to driving pysics + SD's fighting engine is a big, brutal no-brainer. GTA couldn't compete, even if the game world would be more concentrated cause that just looks more realistic anyways! Los Santos is absolutely NOTHING like Los Angeles or Palm Springs or Laguna or the Salton Sea or wherever the heck it's supposed to resemble. Not that I've been to Hong Kong... : )
