Sony's always been quite liberal with its firmware updates, but the Japanese giant seems to have lost the plot recently. Fresh off the back of a PlayStation Vita patch, as well as a truckload of news about the PlayStation 4's incoming expansion, the firm has just announced a totally new update for the PlayStation TV. The patch will add four player remote play to the shockingly slim super machine.
Unfortunately, no concrete release date has been announced for the features. However, it is purported to be arriving around the same time as the mysterious, and much requested, PS4 firmware v2.00 patch. We, erm, don't actually have a proper date for that one either. But rest assured, the entire Push Square team is working tirelessly to decode cryptic comments left by Sony staffers that pertain to the update.
Is this the sort of feature that would appeal to you? Have you been making use of remote play? Connect wirelessly in the comments section below.

Are they patching in the ability to actually use a streaming media app on a streaming media console? No?
(Walks away)
With this risk of repeating old ground thats been covered enough, I just hope Sony have invested in more servers by the time PlayStation launches. If this things turns out to be a real success the same issues will arise with server lag and it will inturn do more damage than has already been done. In terms of peoples opinion I mean.
Yesterday I couldn't sign into all 3 of my PlayStation devices due to some PSN server issues. I sincerely hope Sony can get on top of these issues before they start releasing other devices and I really hope they get it resolved soon.
Sony should realize that people will remember the bad mistakes alot longer than the good. You only have to use E3 2013 as a good example. Microsoft made so many mistakes with the X1 press briefing that it left people feeling so angry that they jumped ship and came over to PlayStation. You only have to look at the response to Sony's online issues by going onto online forums to see that some people are already loosing faith. Those people are most likely the ones who jumped ship to PlayStation but if things get any worse Sony could start seeing there more loyal fans follow suit.
@WARDIE Don't be worried, there is zero chance of this being a big success.
@eLarkos Im inclined to agree with you but over seas it may sell in droves. The Japanese will most likely be the biggest buyer of this device but I have a few friends that have shown some interest in the PlayStation TV. I did however show them that they would be better off with the PlayStation Vita instead. They liked the idea of the PS TV giving them access to there PS4 anywhere in the house via remote play on another TV set. I explained that with the Vita you can do the same except you don't need the extra TV.
My Vita's remote play works pretty well although I know other peoples not so well. I can use it anywhere in my house and I can also sit in my backyard whilst still playing my PS4. They liked that idea alot better. I also said you can play on your PS4 via remote play on the toilet which they loved lol
@WARDIE This device has been available in Japan for quite some time now and it is selling extremely poorly - along with all other home consoles.
I actually believe that its biggest market will be the US. It is heavily reliant on a good internet connection for its main features and the US are also very TV centric. With that being said, there are just far too many better alternatives in the US right now. Im sure a few PS4 owners will pick one up, but those numbers wont even be worth talking about. An argument could be made that the poorer nations will adopt the PS TV because of its low price point. I don't believe this for numerous reasons.
@Godsire- yarp, also do you have a bucket of money to store a bunch of games on $ony Play$tation memory cards
@WARDIE I didn't have any trouble with PSN on ps4, didn't try vita.
@eLarkos personally I think it'll sell better in overcrowded Europe, space is a premium and this might come in handy
@Bad_muthaAdebis Yea, I hear ya. I just think that the majority of sales of this thing will go to PS4 owners as there are just way too many better options for TV streaming. Purely for gaming purposes (without a connected PS4) is surely an incredibly niche market. Remember that many of the alternative streaming services offer at least some form of casual gaming. So the already niche market for PS TV gaming is now reduced to people who strictly want Playstation gaming.
@WARDIE I know they impact sales, public view etc... of Sony products to some degree but I personally can't take people serious whose opinions sway back and forth with every little booboo there's happening.
So far I'm hearing bad things about it, I'll reserve my opinion until i hear enough negative reviews
@eLarkos You make a good point. I just wish Sony would stop trying to corner the market with devices that people neither want or can afford.
Trouble is with Sony is they spread themselves to fin. They have a winner with the PS4 and I believe they should be making that there main focus at this point. They've had some great devices over the years but now most of there departments are loosing money where as the PS4 is actually in profit. So instead of bringing out extra devices they should be putting money back into the PlayStation brand (except PS TV) like the PS4 with better servers and better advertising.
The lack of media streaming and the need to use super expensive memory cards don't do anything for me wanting it. If the machine can't do what it was initially meant to do then features like 4 player remote play aren't going to tempt me.
The fact that this Playstation TV doesn't even have netflix, it makes no sense and Sony basically created playstation TV, without the TV. LOL Time to fire some people.
I can't even think of any Sony games where 4-player remoteplay would be useful.
Am I seeing people being pessimistic about the PS TV or is it just me? o.O
I know this won't sell so will wait for a £30 (or less) letting go of unwanted inventory next year sale.
Do you guys have any idea of how long your idea gets to the public in the http://share.blog.us.playstation.com/ideas/popular/ after submitting it or how to correctly submit on for your idea to be shown to the public to vote? Here is the thing I tried submitting an idea about adding a feature to the PS T.V. of not Mirroring gameplay streaming. So in other words, say that I wanted to play co-op with a friend on Call of Duty on the PS4, but if my friend and I wanted to play on separate screen like full screen on each T.V.while playing co-op on the same game or if 4 players wanted to play and we wanted split screen on two T.Vs. I submitted this about 4 days ago, the same day that the PS T.V. was released in North America. I would appreciate the help and sorry for the longest sentence in the world, try to get some air.
@HulkSmash34 Hulk.
I don't think the PSTV has the required processing power to accomplish that. I'm not sure the PS4 does either without affecting some other system usability.
The PSTV and Vita only receive a video stream from the PS4 and relay controller input. What you suggest would mean the PS4 essentially generating two streams from the same game. Two rendered sets of visuals and mechanics. It would also rely heavily on developer input.
I quite like the idea of PSTV. Not paying £85 for one. Or for Remote Play. But using my Vita cards on a TV would be cool.
Of course, Sony could just turn on the 1080i video output capabilities of the fat Vita (the TV out capability was removed from the slim).
What would help PSTV would be some native local multiplayer games. I mean, update (for example) FIFA 15/Playstation All Stars etc for local multiplayer and sell a two controller pack and you make a viable alternative to the Android microconsoles.
>:/ Arrrghh! I feel like smashing something now. Thanks for the reply, I guess I shall wait till a new better version of the PS T.V releases then.
@KALofKRYPTON Definitely not certain on this but im pretty sure that splitting a single screen and sending the "splits" to different screens are almost identical in terms of processing power. Its just the resolutions of each screen that would hurt the processing. Maybe there would be wifi issues though.
@eLarkos
So, run each split at half res type of deal?
Yeah, I suppose that would work. Essentially zooming half the screen. Wouldn't look too hot I imagine.
@KALofKRYPTON Yea, that's what I was thinking. Might work but would prob look terrible.
@eLarkos
As I say, I think local multiplayer would help the PSTV, a lot.
@KALofKRYPTON I didn't even know it doesnt have local multiplayer. Maybe in a few years when more people have better internet speeds this thing will sell quite well purely as a PS4 Remote Play box. Until then I don't hold hope.
@eLarkos Well, I'm assuming it doesn't.I can't think of any Vita games that are local multiplayer, and it's not advertised anywhere as having it. And if it did, again, it would need developers to update their games.
