Sony's pushed the power button on PlayStation TV in Japan, with an update on its website stressing that it's no longer shipping the microconsole to local retailers. The failed format is still available from some stores, of course, but the platform holder will not be replenishing inventory once current stocks run out. In other words, it's done.
The experimental appliance made waves when it was announced in 2013, with the positive response prompting the platform holder to release the gizmo in Western markets. However, a lack of real support for the system sentenced it to a dire launch, with retailers eager to offload stock at reduced rates almost immediately after launch.
For those unfamiliar with the hardware, it's based upon the tech inside the PlayStation Vita, and is capable of playing select titles from the handheld's catalogue, as well as various PlayStation Portable and PSone games. But its minimal software support and shoddy selection of multimedia apps has ultimately damned it to its current fate.
What are your thoughts on the PlayStation TV? Are you surprised to see it brought to a premature end like this, or do you think that its death is overdue? Tune in to the comments section below.

I've got one, and I use it to play my vita games on the tv as I found the Vita uncomfortable to play for more than 30 mins or so. It's not a great piece of kit all told, but does what it needs to.
I'm glad my father isn't like Sony; my brother that was born 2 years after me would've been getting all the praise, all the presents and all the attention, whereas my youngest brother and I would probably have been thrown off of a cliff right after birth, Spartan style.
Don't you cry PS TV, my little ugly duckling, I still love you...
I don't have one, didn't have any real intentions of getting one, and I'm not really surprised that it's a failure. Sony's done a pretty crappy job keeping their side consoles supported. If the PSP and Vita are dead to them, I doubt this offshoot mattered much to Sony.
Really stinks for those who supported it. Now it's another failed science project.
I love mine. I play Vita games on my TV with it.
Pretty much confirming again that Sony is incapable of doing anything right in the games industry outside of designing a base game console and supplying it with software (which in my book, is the two most important things).
my ps tv is actually my ps1, but its better because it has hdmi. the only game which i vaguely want to play which it doesnt have is croc, other than that, yeah, its my ps1. so i like it
I liked mine...
Now, please make Vita 3000 with this tv output function... It was an bad move when they removed the function from Vita...

Still retails for 70 euros here so I haven't got one yet. I may get one if they become ultra cheap.
It isn't bad. Just very niche. Sony should have known this and not made too many.
I will snatch one up when I see it being sold dirt cheap. I will just use it for remote play so I can use my PS4 in multiple rooms. I also own a tonne of Vita games thanks to PS+. Im sure I will be able to find one for less than 20 quid soon enough.
Apple tv / pstv / ouya / firestick
Brand new market, everyone jumped in, everyone failed, there was no market.
Unfortunately you never know what's going to be the next big thing. People are strange and fickle. Companies had to throw a product into the mix - but the small boxes are all made redundant if you have an iPad or Virgin box. Even the pstv usp of playing the ps4 in another room - you can just as easily move the ps4 or better still your vita.
Still quite expensive here in Japan. Would be very happy to pick one up on the cheap but still 14000 yen (on Amazon) compared to $50 in the USA. Is the PSTV like the Vita in that you can only have one account?
@themcnoisy Moving your PS4 is loads more hassle than just turning on the little box. Also remote play isn't as good as it could be on the Vita since it doesn't have L2/R2 and the screen is too small for certain games. Granted you would have to spend money for the PSTV but, I've alread seen them go for less than £40. Now Sony has officially stop supporting and supplying the device its only going to get cheaper.
@WARDIE obviously its easier to put on the little box, but is it worth £50 when you can just move your ps4?
I'm playing devils advocate because I've been dropping hints to get one for Easter. I've almost maxed the cars on ridge racer 4 and want to do it again. ON BIG SCREEN! And with Sony dropping support they should become collectible.
But for the general population there isn't s desire or need for these trinkets. Peoples homes are littered with gadgets and the use of these boxes is mirrored in similar more used bigger boxes, tablets or in the TV themselves.
@themcnoisy Actual the firestick is not in the same category as PSTV or OUYA, it's a tv streaming device like a Roku, not a game console. And surprisingly they are very popular.
I still have mine and I actually like it since I am not a huge handheld gamer. I don't know what people's complaint was about it, it did exactly what it was advertise, playing Vita games on the TV.
@themcnoisy CEX is selling them for £35 and that price will drop. I was talking about myself and not the general population as most people won't even know what a PSTV is. Infact there are still people who haven't even heard of the Vita. I've had people think I was playing on a PSP and when I told them what it was they looked confused lol
@Tasuki but that are all streaming devices thats what they all do. I have a firestick with a few programs and addons installed. Its ok, but nothing that you couldn't do off an android mobile.
They are all pseudo streaming boxes although as you rightly point out the ouya and pstv have different demographics they were aiming for. Ouya in particular went for the Emulator crowd. But I wouldn't say any of them are uber successful, the firestick is so underpowered its pretty useless in all honesty. You get to the end of a film and it cant keep up due to its awful onboard memory. I don't know the numbers but how many people use these things regularly and for doing legal things? The only beneficiary I can see is kodi and similar peer to peer illegal streaming Services.
I got a Vita for Black Friday last year, it's a nifty device. Too bad it didn't get the recognition it deserved. Those awful memory card prices are to blame as well as Sony's lack of real support. That said, I do kinda want a Vita TV because I want to show off some of my Vita games on the TV. I wish the 3DS had something like this, or streaming capabilities to the Wii U. Can you stream Vita games to PS3/4 or is it that you can only stream PS3/4 games to Vita?
I have a Ps TV. Cutest console I've ever owned. I still play it a lot too. I have PS1 games, PSP games, and tons of Vita games, so I'm really happy (especially since it's the only console that has Visual Novels).
It's probably one of my favorite consoles based off of just the cuteness factor. The only thing keeping it from being perfect (in my eyes) is lack of Netflix support. (T-T )
I was gonna buy one when they were $30 on clearance everywhere, but, I only use 1 TV and I didn't really want to commit to yet another device on the entertainment shelf that can't even play more than half the Vita library. Didn't wanna deal with the "Does this game play? Does this one play? Oh this one does but needs mapping to touchpad" crap.
If it was compatible with all games I would have grabbed one.
We usually just use our tv in the living room for everything . Directv , Wii , Wii U , ps3 and ps4 . When I upgraded to a 4k tv just over a year ago I moved my old hdtv to our bedroom . I didn't want to get an extra directv receiver for the bedroom because I knew that we would never use it . I started thinking that since we now had a tv upstairs I should have something connected to it . I bout a roku stick , built my own attic hdtv antenna and I bought a pstv. I already used my vita now and then to remote play the ps4 so why not ? I am ashamed to say that over a year later the only reason I have ever had it turned on was to set up my PS account and the Wi-Fi settings . Same thing with the roku . I still love the idea of having both of them up there and hopefully one day I will actually use them . I think that the pstv was a great idea and am sad to see the support go .
I've only ever used mine as a way of playing my ps4 games on a second tv. 👍
Much like Apple TV, and even Vitas remote play functionality, it's a difficult thing to market without accusations of misleading consumers since experiences will drastically vary user to user depending on the individual networks it's installed into.
I just bought one here in the US for $29.98 at wal-mart 2 days ago. Worth it for that price alone. Great streaming the ps4 to our bedroom upstairs so my wife and I can watch hulu in bed!
No surprise here. Vita had little support as it was and the even smaller selection of games for this hardly helped it.
If all it does is stream Vita titles (effectively) to the big screen and streaming PS4 to a 2nd TV, its seems to have limited appeal. Not saying it has NO appeal but most people buy a Vita for portability and many people are unlkely to want to stream to a 2nd TV. Some of the Vita games (I believe) are cross platform anyway and can be played via the PS4.
I can see it being useful for very specific circumstances and situations but for many its not going to have much appeal - A small percentage of Vita and/or PS4 owners
I too bought it cheap, just for the remote play feature, so i could play my PS4 in bed from time to time.
Sadly, the remote play features LAG as well.
Playing time-sensitive games is just impossible. (BF4, UNCHARTED COLLECTION, LBP and more..)
Ended up wiring a long HDMI cable from the living room to the bedroom,
and an HDMI switch - problem solved, the PSTV now rests in peace with the rest of my junk items.
I said, long time ago, that would be dead and will never make success, some people disagree with me, well fanboys don't understand market, specially the Japanese one.
I never knew what the device really did. If it had been done right it could have done well. Full support for all vita games would have been good
Pretty pointless as it didn't have the right desirablity. Vita is portable. PS4 for huge screen gaming. PSTV sat inbetween but offered nothing really new. If it could had been designed slicker eg. ipod and had a full feature mp3 player on it - now that would change it's perception and usefullness.
I know I never really comment over here, but I must say that isn't too surprising. The Vita TV bombed harder than even I thought possible for Japan. Still it is a sign of the times, if Sony is culling the TV in Japan...maybe the cut the Vita off here in the west...I really hope not because it really is a charming handheld. This is coming form a huge Nintendo supporter, but man Sony really messed up on the Vita.
It is a shame - I think if it had third party support on apps (Netflix, Spotify etc.) as well as remote play and vita/older gen games, this might have had a chance. As it was, it was a niche offshoot of a niche system.
That said, if I see one drop below £30 I might be tempted for the spare room and for PS Vita games.
Don't you mean the Vita TV? I thought theirs could play cartridges. Wile ours can't....
@Grawlog I agree, it would have been so much cheaper to just add a micro hdmi port to the vita than to ever try another small, less capable console like the ps tv. I like mine and I'm now glad I have two in the house, but they have little purpose really.
