PlayStation Home may be derelict these days, but the concept of a truly connected virtual social space remains an interesting one. And it would appear that the platform holder hasn't entirely given up on the idea, as it showcased the building blocks of a PlayStation VR-powered hub at the Game Developers Conference last week.
Video from the panel was uploaded online by Game Beat's Jeffrey Grubb, and while it's extremely rudimentary, there are some entertaining ideas here. A group of three people are shown exploring a very basic virtual world, interacting with instruments and playing ball games. The avatars' mouths move, and they also simulate eye contact to make things feel more real.
We'd be shocked if the platform holder didn't explore this concept further, because with a more polished art style and more entertaining activities, we could imagine a social experience using these features being quite powerful indeed. The demo starts at about one minute in, and is well worth watching if you're interested in virtual reality.

This would work if people could turn up to a social space appearing as their favourite characters, the sale of avatars would then actually be worthwhile.
So far this is the best use of VR I've seen. Not the graphics engine, I don't mean seen in that way, but as a concept, a VR world like Home inhabited by friends to mess around in.
One of the things that really bothered me about Wii U was Nintendo built a camera into the GMaepad but then really never made any use of it. 3 1/2 years later and besides launch title Tank Tank Tank it just sits there. When I first saw the camera I thought it would be great for online games like Battleship, chess, checkers, hangman, etc, I thought it would be a great way for friends and family who lived apart to socialize. I was all set to talk my parents and sisters families into getting Wii U's so we could all hang out and play games and vid chat together. But it never happened, and I've never talked a single person into getting a Wii U and know only 1 person besides myself who owns one.
But seeing this vid changes everything. When do the Caprica virtual sex-death raves begin?

That one "glove" patent would be perfect for applications like this!
