While the industry may be awash with rumours of iterative hardware upgrades, the PlayStation 4 is continuing to quietly chug along at an intense pace, with the platform holder confirming today that sales have now surpassed 40 million units worldwide. This means that the system is still the fastest-selling in Sony's history, outpacing the PlayStation 2.
"We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time," said a chuffed Andrew House in a press release. "We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market, and providing ground-breaking features and network services."
The manufacturer expects to add a further 20 million units through 31st March, with the speculated PS4K like to carry the brunt of that. Software sales for the system are at 270.9 million units as of 22nd May, and the manufacturer expects titles like Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian to boost those numbers higher.
It's quite amazing how well the PS4 is doing, but it's richly deserved in our opinion. While there always complaints that can be lobbied at a console, the diversity of experiences available on the new-gen device is unmatched, and it's only going to get better as the year goes on. We can't wait to see what E3 2016 brings next month.

Outpacing the PS2? Seriously?
Did they give a date for the 40mil? I'm just wondering if that was for year end March 31st or if it's up to date including he Uncharted 4 model?
And I wouldn't expect the "brunt" of the projected 20mil to be PS4k Neo if that launches at $350 or $400 and they drop the old model to $250 for the holidays. Maybe more of an even split. Of course if they drop the old model entirely and only have Neo starting in Sept, well then that will have the brunt by default.
Hopefully E3 sorts it all out. Well not the Black Friday sales price, but all the rest.
@rjejr 22nd May is the date that it crossed 40 million, so including Uncharted 4.
It intrigues me how PS4Neo is going to change the PS4 story now and what E3 '16 brings this crazy generation.
@get2sammyb Ok thanks. Sooo...
those recent numbers still count towards the 20mil as the 20mil is from April 1, 2016 until March 31, 2017 if it's a yearly projection. And if that's the case, and w/ FFXV releasing Sept 30th, depending on when Neo launches it could easily be 15mil old PS4 5mil Neo to reach that 20mil.
I'm still holding out hope for a PS4K Neo FFXV bundle at launch myself, w/ a 4k version download of the movie. (Not that I have a 4k tv to watch it on, but still) That would really stick it to Xbox One FFXV sales.
Hope Sony doesn't pull a Ntineod at E3 and spend the whole time talking about TLG.
Someone made a good point that Sony might not even talk about Neo at all at E3, in fact the console won't get much fanfare. It'll just launch quietly later in the year with it gradually becoming the default PS4 on the market. It would make sense from a marketing POV because it frees up resources for PSVR. Plus they deflect most of the backlash before it's released.
@adf86 That would be very wise but there's so much hype now about PS4Neo and Xbox1.5, and what the heck NX is (that is confirmed by Nintendo to not appear at E3 though). Plus VR in different forms, this is a mad generation.
@rjejr Yeah, that's correct. Some of these sales will count towards the forecast.
I wonder what will happen if MS reveal an XB1.5 that's a hell of a lot more powerfull than the Neo (they are the rumor's I read on another Pushsquare post) that'll be interesting. I'll certainly pick one up, maybe instead of the NEO..
@xMEADx Then you could get the best of both worlds.
@VanillaLake great for the consumer but I reckon PS sale's will suffer a bit, i'm still a very firm believer that the main reason PS4 has done so well is because MS did a shockingly poor job with XB1. Can't take anything away from Sony though, the PS4 is exactly what gamer's were looking for and Sony new this, MS didn't they were so far off the mark they got blown to bit's in this battle
@xMEADx That's the only reason why PS4 sold tons of units without games. Microsoft made a lot of mistakes: the always online premise, mandatory Kinect 2.0, high launch price... Microsoft corrected all their mistakes and now Xbox One is a great console, but it is a bit too late. The fact that Wii U was a disaster even before it was released also helped Sony. Now with Neo, Xbox 1.5 and NX everything could change though, I'm intrigued about what is going to happen.
@xMEADx I'd get Xbox 1.5 as soon as it's under £150 2ndhand and it has a few more exclusives then it's defo worth considering as a 2nd console. Currently tomb raider, quantum sumfink and halo 5 (but I hear that's a pants 4 hours single campaign) isn't enough. And that Xbox power brick!! Come on if dreamcast and Wii sorted that engineering problem 10 years ago why can't Microsoft do it today? Let's hope Microsoft can deliver at E3. My salary Will be squids in for PS4 Neo for exclusives like horizon, no man's sky, persona 5, PSVR, the star wars exclusive VR game and the huge Destiny 2, rockstar game, launch plus most likely a sexier refined console.
@bbq_boy Halo 5 a 4 hours single campaign? More like a 7 1/2 hours campaign, and the online is brilliant. http://howlongtobeat.com/
And all those analysts were saying consoles are doomed. It's great to hear the PS4 doing so well. Can't wait to pick one up myself... whenever that day may be .
@VanillaLake
The ps4 has no games meme is so 2013. Also you can go to wiki and see ps4 has total of 1035 games vs xb1 628 games.
@xMEADx
The thing is, on previous generations microsoft has every advantage (launching 1 year earlier, cheaper than ps3, more easy to develop, third party game better on xbox, more third party exclusive, etc) and they still have the same sales with ps3 (both has sold 80m plus). They have no chance on the same ground, playstation is the more known brand worldwide compared to xbox.
@wiiware You are totally wrong about me, I was talking with @xMEADx about PS4 and Xbox One launch in 2013. Read again.
@VanillaLake
My point still stand, I remember ps4 launch with 26 games and xbox1 launch with 23 games. Again, to say that ps4 has no games compared to xbox1 is absurd and not true in 2013 to 2016.
And the reason ps4 sold more than xbox1 in 2013 is because its cheaper, more powerfull, and playstation brand is more trusted than xbox. Sure xbox1 fiasco help, but to say thats the only reason is wrong. To beat ps4 microsoft has to do everything right and sony to do every wrong.
@wiiware I remember lots of articles praising Sony for selling almost 10 millions PS4 units "without games" (don't take it literally). Xbox One early mistakes and Wii U crazy ideas also helped Sony, you have to admit it. Of course, PlayStation brand is hugely popular (they are kings in Europe and Xbox doesn't even exist in Japan). Man, you make it sound like I don't like Sony, when I bought a PS4 6 months after launch! I have Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One.
@bbq_boy I would also buy the XB1.5 as a second console but if both MS and Sony both release an upgraded console and XB1.5 is much more powerfull, because i'm going to upgrade anyway I might as well get an XB1.5 and get the besta both world's I already have a PS4 and Sony do keep telling PS4 owner's not to worry as Neo really isn't THAT much of an upgrade . XB1.5 is rumored to have Occulus Rift support as well..
@xMEADx
People fail to take into account that unlike Xbox, PlayStation is actually a global brand. Not a knock, just a fact. I think a better reveal would've made things more competitive in MS' biggest markets, North America and the UK, but every where else, the PlayStation would still have a significant lead.
I'm interested to see what MS does though. It cut the original Xbox short of the traditional five years and released the 360 after just four to get a jump on the PS3. I could see something similar happening here and I'm ready to trade in my Xbox One for the new Xbox if that does happen. As long as it's backwards compatible with X1 from the start and I can transfer my saves.
@VanillaLake
It doesn't have to do with whenever you like sony or not thought, just saying I still don't understand the ps4 has no games meme.
Yes xbox1 fiasco help, althought I don't think nintendo is relevant anymore, their last succesfull console is the wii and it have difference audience than playstation (casuals buying it for wii sport, they already moved to free to play games on smartphone now).
Edit: I still like nintendo thought, I will buy their console for mario, zelda and all their exclusive. I just hope their next console is $200ish good handheld rather than expensive home console.
I made the jump from 360nto PS4 because I really bought into the 'for the players' marketing and I don't regret it. I have used my PS4 more in a year and a half then I did for twice that with the 360.
@VanillaLake Sorry me bad. I only checked out Angry Joe's Halo 5 review cos he's a self confessed xbox and halo fan, and he said it was really short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahRDm9Bwlyc I should had checked out a few other sites first. Still 7-8 hours on normal is too short for me I played halo 2 first time and after 3rd mission got bored and you can literally run pass mobs through most of the levels in under 3 hours lol. However halo 3 and reach are my fav of the series. Sadly though halo 5 just doesn't do it for me this gen... guessed I'm a Bungie fanboy! Cos I flipping love Destiny!!
@xMEADx lucky you! Sadly I have a fiance who wants to get married and lack of time. Ah the sweet sweet days of being a student and playing ps1, dreamcast, gba and chilling at mates infront of gamecube.... no bills to pay, no mouths to feed...
@bbq_boy I understand. Personally, I haven't played Halo 5 yet because I'm still busy with Master Chief Collection (which I'm liking this far), but many people say that Halo 5 campaign is disappointing, while others say it's like the beginning of something new. I don't know yet, but not everybody is happy with 343 Industries, although Halo 4 was very well received.
By the way, Wii U power brick is huge too!
