Sony's rolled out a summer commercial for the PlayStation 4 in North America, which is all about greatness. As a partially enthused voiceover witters on about the word, the ad includes footage of No Man's Sky, Gran Turismo Sport, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and The Last Guardian. It got us hyped β how about you?

Greatness is already here since the PsOne era.........
What is greatness?.........waiting two and a half years into a lifespan for the first great game, Uncharted 4.........What is greatness?, paying 400 dollars for a peripheral so I can play gimmicky games while I wave my hands around with a Move controller (and paying an extra 400 so I can get the optimal experience).......
Ok, maybe I'm being a bit negative.
@sub12 Given the game I bought it for didn't land until April with staggered release dates, and I haven't bought a game since nor do I plan to until at least next year when /something/ that interests me lands, I'm failing to see greatness too.
And that $400 peripheral...yeah maybe when it's cheaper. It's for the hardcore of hardcore and that ain't me. I'm a filthy casual. I considered it but I'd rather put that money on a new console rather than an add on.
Is good and all but... where is God of War 4 and Spiderman?
You guys do make me giggle.
PS4 is blatantly the best gaming console ever made sooo...yup.
@kyleforrester87
Nah, NES, SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, PS2.......
@sub12 all fine consoles, but really, let's be honest, the PS4 is the best
Tons of games, tons of variety. Love it.
@kyleforrester87
With hardly any individuality, unlike the NES, SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, and more arguably, the PS2.
The Xbox One and the PS4 are the same thing with a few exclusives (of which, only one or two have been really great), and yeah, game development is different these days, but they don't match the uniqueness of older consoles.
@kyleforrester87 I'm with you on this mate. The PS4 pushes boundaries, offers a diverse range of gaming and social options. MS are planning play anywhere when either the XB1 S or Scorpio come out. PS4 have had shareplay AND remote play for quite some time. MS struggle to reach 1080p visuals where 1080p should have been standard this gen. Now, the PS4K is coming as a big brother to the PS4 opening the door to 4K and a whole host of visual enhancements. The PSVR is due out on the vanilla PS4 whereas MS has to bring out a whole new console to accommodate VR. So, yeah, greatness really does await and I for one can't wait.
@sub12 dunno about that!
Doom
Fez
Rocket Leauge
Uncharted 4
Axiom Verge
Drive Club
Alien Isolation
Bloodborne
Rachet & Clank
Destiny
Witcher 3
DELICIOUS Personally, I started on a C64, I have fondest memories of my PS1, but being real, the PS4 has the overall best gaming experiences in my opinion It's a great achievement considering consoles were supposedly on the way out.
For me, some of this greatness is a PS3 game and a PS2 game, Skyrim and FFXII. To be fair there are some cracking games coming out soon, No Man's Sky and Deus Ex to name a few.
@kyleforrester87
It's like, you can take a look at MGS 5...........I'll never play that game again, despite doing somethings fundamentally great (granted, it's kind of a overrated mess), overall, good game............something like Super Mario World, is timeless, arcade sensibility + fun factor breeds replay value. I'll give the Witcher 3 a nod as one of my all time favorites.
Still, the PS4 and XB1 are more or less the same box. Something like the Dreamcast, not only did it have an unprecedented amount of quality titles in such a short time span, it also had it's own unique feel and style.
While for Wii U owners Boredom Awaits!
Is that Nick Offerman doing the voiceover?
Considering the only game in that trailer I want is Horizon, its pretty average. I understand that's pretty much all the 'exclusives' out in the next year too...
I still think tLG looks last gen and would bore me, NMS will get tedious and repetitive with heavy feelings of deja vu and GTs has zero appeal - especially compared to FH3 - I would rather play F6 if I wanted that 'sim' racer feel...
From those I only care about Horizon and maybe Gran Turismo.
Yet as with my Wii U it is quality over quantity so I won't complain.
greatness is when you find a console and spend happy times enjoying the games on it! Stupid is when someone moans and can't choose a platform they like and spend negative energy trolling!
@bbq_boy
I'm not saying the PS4 is a bad console, it's a good one that also happens to be user friendly.......is it the best console of all time, thus far? That all depends on your personal experience.........but I reckon the vast majority of people would say, nooo...........
I
Is it the greatest? Based on opinion I guess but the exclusive lineup has been great.
Uncharted 4
Ratchet and Clank
Until Dawn
Bloodborne
Tearaway Unfolded
Odin Sphere
Infamous Second Son
Killzone Shadow Fall
Plus Upcoming :
No mans sky
Gran turismo sport
The last guardian
Horizon zero dawn
Persona 5
Spider man
Days gone
Star Ocean 5
Wild
Detroit
Death Stranding
@kyleforrester87 I believe the Jaguar was the best.
@waluigifan1 that's true
@JoeBlogs think it's an American thing. Master System all the way IMO!
PSVR swings the PS4 into my favourite console as it's the only console (at present) to offer the experience. They were always ahead of MS and Nintendo this generation and seem to be continuing that trend heading forward. But it is down to personal preference, and every one is different. It would be boring if we were all the same, I don't think it would push the mega corporations to push the boundaries either as there'd be little to no competition. So, yes, my fave console is the PS4, but the industry as a whole should be saluted for giving us a choice of what suits us best
Is the PS4 the 'greatest' - in my opinion absolutely not. It doesn't even come close to the impact that the N64 and games had on the gaming world!
For me the PS4 my have the 'best' exclusive on a current console and Horizon Zero Dawn is currently my most anticipated game but if you judge a console on sheer volume of exclusive that appeal directly to you, then the Xbox One takes that. It may not have any that appeal quite as much BUT it makes up for it in sheer quantity. You can argue all you want about quality over quantity but I wonder how many people would prefer to have a steady stream of 'good' games or 1-2 quality games a year.
I am not saying the PS4 has a 'lack' of exclusives but more a lack of those that appeal to me. In nearly 3 years, I have Killzone, Infamous (good but not the best - not even compared to their PS3 games) and Uncharted 4. I do have Uncharted and Last of Us remasters but I have these on PS3 too. You can add Bloodbourne (never like DS games), R&C (still a remake) etc if you like but I would still rather have (and do have) many more of the XB1 exclusives.
Its all relative of course, if you don't like or want Sunset Overdrive, Dead Rising, Forza (various) Ryse, Halo, Gears, QB, Crackdown, Ori, Cuphead, Scalebound, Recore, Sea of Thieves, Rare Replay etc then I can understand why you would think the PS4 is better. Looking back at the PS3 generation though, I again think the PS4 is 'lacking'. Some of that could be down to the extra development time games need with the new hardware. I do think though there is a reason people feel this generation is full of 'remasters' and sequels...
PSVR could of course change things. Chances are we will see a steady stream of 'exclusives', new IP's, reboots that look/feel very different etc but as it stands at the moment, the PS4 is 'good' but nowhere near the greatest...
Too much greatness, my 1TB HDD is nearly full, my backlog of games is massive, I have many special/limited edition preordered games.
@sub12 C'mon man, that kind of logic is only work in ign, gamespot or eurogamer, there are a lot of great ps4 games from the beginning of ps4 era. And considering ps4 sales outpacing the mighty ps2 then yes, the vast majority of people would say the ps4 is one of the best console of all time. Wii u and xbox one suck thought so I understand if some people that only have those being jealos of ps4
@Kidfried Agree, unlike previous generation where I need 2 console (xbox 360 for 3rd party, ps3 for exclusive) I only need ps4 in this generation, like I said before ps4 is like ps2 version 2, you don't need additional console if you have it.
@BAMozzy I have the N64, mario 64 and zelda is good but there's no way it has impact on gaming world beside one of 3D games pioneer beside tomb raider and mgs 1. Ps1 prove that gaming can be mature, that not only kid play videogames, that's the biggest impact of sony in the gaming world. About big xbox one games, I think it only has halo, gear and forza, I mean cuphead and ori is indie, if you want to include indie then ps4 have a lot of really good indie console exclusive, nobody buy xbox one to play cuphead or ori, they can play it in their laptop. Also did you see their e3? from now on xbox one will have zero exclusive since all of their game can be played in pc.
@zimbogamer I already have all the game on your first list, and with the exception of star ocean 5 and wild, I already preordered all of the games in your upcoming list
I don't understand how people can say xbox one has more exclusive than ps4, I mean look at this list:
http://static1.gamespot.com/uploads/original/1547/15472454/2965323-xboxonevsps4.jpg
Also from wikipedia
PS4 (Total 1097 games):
Exclusive = 106
Console exclusive = 325
Timed = 33
Multiplatform = 604
Xbox One (Total 770 games):
Exclusive = 29
Console exclusive = 93
Multiplatform = 555
@wiiware
"Wii u and xbox one suck"......"jealos of PS4"
Yeah.....I think you should be the one making an IGN account.
@KingofSaiyanZ eh? It's a PS4 advert on a PS website. Don't think the majority of these comments are in anyway 'fanyboyish' or argumentative to be fair! Nowt wrong with folks having opinions on the best games and systems providing we're civil about it
@sub12 Nah, I like it here
@KingofSaiyanZ Well pushsquare is a playstation website so it's their job to report ps news. I think nintendo life is a great site with little of console wars nonsense, and the comments there is great. I mean there are more of console wars comment in pushsquare compared to nintendo life, you can't publish ps4 commercial news in here without some people complaining ps4 is not that great, no exclusive, yada yada etc.
The implementation of online play has shifted gaming for me when it comes to consoles. I love to play games with my friends and there are some fun co-op games out now, though I hope for more non-shooter types. I do enjoy the solo games, but it sure would be fun to have a friend join me in the Witcher 3! As we're all a little nostalgic, I began on Pong and Atari 2600. ColecoVision, but I loved Intellivision. NES, but SNES was more fun. Sega Genesis lasted a long time too. Once the PlayStation hit, I've stayed with Sony.
@wiiware The N64 and its game library was very influential. The whole 3D games as we know them today owe a lot to the N64 and its analogue controls. Whilst 3d games had existed before, the N64 with its Analogue control stick - something Sony 'borrowed' gave games a whole new set of movement rules and finesse. I can't deny that Sony took gaming to a more mainstream audience (partly by pushing it in clubs) but that's not to say the N64 didn't have 'adult' games - It had Goldeneye, Turok, Perfect Dark, Shadowman, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Carmageddon, Resident Evil, Doom, Duke Nukem, South Park games etc
Zelda is an RPG as was Quest too. Its certainly a myth that the N64 was strictly for kids and only did 3d cute platformers. It had Fighting games (killer instinct, wrestling), racing (not just kart but Futuristic, arcade etc) Star Wars (Rogue Squadron, Pod Racer), RTS, Sport too In fact it basically had games for all generations and tastes. It and its games inspired many of the game franchises we see today and then of course there is the big multiplayer focus too. It certainly wasn't just 2d/3d platformers!!! The fact that many games also appear in the top games of all time also says a lot!!
Sony borrowed heavily from the N64 and when it started, certainly had no quality control either - releasing 100's of games regardless of quality.
@ekreig As I said, the N64 had a number of RPG's - the biggest 2 of course were Zelda and there was also 2 Goemon games that had a strong RPG element too. Quest 64, paper mario and Aidyn Chronicles are more classic RPGs. It may not of been 'strong' on RPG's but that doesn't mean it didn't have any.
Every console gas weak points but if you look at how the strengths of it impacted gaming and how it influenced others - not just directly (like Banjo Kazooie influencing R&C for example) but even things like the analogue control system and what that enabled - thanks to Mario 64 - stealth, creeping mechanics etc can all be linked back to that game.
@BAMozzy I think I'm the only one that have nintendo 64 in my class back then, and when I told my friend I have n64 they just stare at me and say "why?", that's how influental nintendo back then in 64 era. After playing tekken, resident evil 1, metal gear 1, and twisted metal all of my friend doesn't want to play nintendo anymore. Sure they innovated with analogue stick, but the thing about innovation is consumer doesn't care who innovated first, they care about who innovated best.
Playstation killed n64 at rpg genre, quest 64 is a joke, I remember egm magazine give it a very bad score, hell even nintendo power give it a 6. Final fantasy 7 is one of the best rpg and it's leaving nintendo for playstation. Also ps1 has wild arm, suikoden, legend of dragoon, and a lot more.
Probably the best commercial I've seen all year. Everything was on point. Made me cry a little.
@wiiware I don't know why you're so intent on burying the N64. Judging from your infantile posts, I very much doubt you were even born during the console's heyday - let alone going to a non-existent school, with your non-existent PlayStation-loving friends.
@kyleforrester87 See, even if I disagree with your sentiments about PS4 being the greatest console ever, at least you're being civil and intelligent in this discussion. That's more than I can say for a lot of people here. BTW, my all-time faves are SNES and N64. I think the PS4 should live its lifespan before its quality can truly be judged - though it certainly is building up a hugely impressive library.
IMO it's unfair to label one machine as the greatest - simply because their are so many amazing consoles out there. From Nintendo you have NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Wii, Wii U, Game Boy, GBA, DS and 3DS. From Sony, there's PS, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and PS Vita. Microsoft has Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Not to mention Sega Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Gear, Nomad... or the rest; Neo-Geo, Amiga, Amstrad, Atari 2600, MSX, ZX Spectrum...
Man, there's NO way there can be a single greatest console! I myself can't even choose between two of them.
@Kage_88 Sure, it's all a moot point anyway really since it's tough to look objectively when factoring in technological developments and our good friend nostalgia. As mentioned, my fondest memories are of PS1, I've a big soft spot for Dreamcast, but in my attempts to put that to one side I just see PS4 as the best home console. But yeah, who cares really, I think we can all agree it's at least a successful machine, and rightly so!
@ekreig Its not 'just' because of its Library but its what the console and that library actually brought to gaming. The analogue controller changed the landscape and what became possible. Before that we basically had the d-pad but the analogue controller opened up so much more possibility, finesse etc. SM64 was quite a 'basic' game by todays standards but the ability to 'tip-toe' to stealth attack the plants (the first I can think of instead of just running when the enemy wasn't looking in your direction - this offered a chance to sneak/stealth), the ability to make small adjustments to flying etc made so much difference. Games like Mario kart also gave us more control over steering. Games like Goldeneye also took advantage of the control system for more precision with aiming and the trigger underneath felt great for shooting too.
Modern games can trace a lot of their heritage back to that era. The ability to move, jump etc in 3D with more precision - vital in a 3d landscape owes a lot to the N64. I know a lot has been refined and the addition of the extra analogue stick has helped with camera angles etc but just look at how many games nowadays use the analogue system rather than a D-pad to great effect. Even computer games before this used the 'd-pad' type movement a key press to move but no 'subtle' movement
The games themselves are still regarded as some of the best ever. Zelda: Ocarina of Time is for many the best game ever. Goldeneye may not have been the first FPS or the first to offer MP but its still regarded as the 'blueprint' for the modern day FPS - a great campaign and MP experience on multiple maps - Its basic formula describes virtually all FPS's today - yes they may have added RPG elements etc but they have more in common than with Doom.
Crash, Ratchet and Clank etc are all heavily influenced by Mario, Banjo and Kazooie.
I know by modern standards, a lot of these games may not hold up anymore. Camera angles weren't always the best but the addition of the second analogue helped. Story's are easier to tell nowadays with dialogue and better facial animation to express emotion, worlds look better and of course sound too - especially if you play with headsets and can take advantage of the full surround sound.
There is no denying though the impact and legacy that the N64 created. In 20yrs time, people may look back and could say the same about the PS4 - particularly if PSVR takes off. Even if VR itself is much better, a lot of games, experiences etc will still be influenced by what PSVR delivers. Regardless of how good the PS3 was, what in reality did it 'bring' to gaming. The PS1 did a lot to bring gaming to a more adult audience even though the N64 had 'adult' games, the PS made gaming socially acceptable as opposed to a guilty pleasure. The PS2 and 3 just built on and refined what came before essentially - yes all these had a number of 'great' gaming moments but very little that has had the impact and influence that the N64 and its games had.
Obviously you could go back to the Atari 2600 and say everything that came after that owes its success and influence to what that achieved too of course. I could mention the Original Xbox that basically gave us online gaming and all that entails. Can't say that hasn't had a lasting impact either...
As you can see it not just the Console or the games but what they achieved and the influence it had on virtually everything today. If not directly, it influenced the games that influenced the modern games and how we play them too. That's why I consider it the greatest ever.
I'd vote for N64 as my fave.. many great games..maybe rose tinted spectales a little here,but having lots of fun with each and every of the dozens of different games i had with it was how remember it.99% of titles were quality games.
N64 is an odd one, I don't think many would doubt that, as a whole, the PS1 library had a lot more going for it.......I also don't think many would doubt that the N64 had some of the most genre defining titles ever, and an initial "wow" factor that the PS1 somewhat lacked.
I still remember seeing the drake lake course in Wave Race 64 for the first time in late 1996 and being absolutely in awe.
@Kage_88 It's the truth man, nostalgia has blinded you. The cartridge is so expensive, I only have mario, zelda, golden eye, starfox and thats it. It's only my opinion thought (and all of my friend back then) so it's okay if you have different opinion.
@ekreig Yeah nostalgia has blinded us, thankfully with psvita or youtube we can play or watch the old games from previous era and see if the games really good or it's just nostalgia talking. I think only mario 64 and zelda oot that's still playable today, the rest from n64 era is blurry mess.
@sub12 The n64 do have the initial wow factor, the first time I've played mario 64 is so cool, it's one the first pioneer of 3D platform gaming. But n64 has most genre defining game? I don't know, I only remember mario, zelda and golden eye back then.
Ps1 has defined 3rd person horror genre with resident evil 1, arcade racer with ridge racer, 3D polygonal fighter with tekken, blockbuster story telling with metal gear solid 1, 3D adventure with tomb raider, etc. Most kid back then see the first tomb raider is way cooler than mario 64, I like it both thought.
@wiiware
I would say genre defining...
@wiiware
That's true about some of the comments. And right on cue the 'PS4 sucks' comments kicked things off. Which is fine if people think that but then when they get met with comments from people on a PLAYSTATION website defending PlayStation, they get annoyed and talk about console war nonsense and resort to personal insults. Hilarious. I still have no idea why some of these people visit the website with the dislike and bitterness they obviously have for PlayStation. They can say they don't but it's clear from some of the comments they're Nintendo fanboys trying to get all of us who don't care for Nintendo as much to 'see the light.' Before anybody says it, I don't care what other people like. And if somebody is disappointed with PS4 that much, great. Sell it off, buy an Xbox One S (it is a great console) or save for the NX or Scorpio and move on. I just don't get why some people seem to get their jollies trolling a website then telling people, such as @wiiware, who actually likes the PlayStation and comes here to talk about it, to leave. Completely asinine. Just like people feel they have the right to constantly sh*t on PS4 (and you are entitled to your opinion) others have the exact same right to say what they want about wonderful and perfect corporate overlord Nintendo.
Now that aside, while I do think PS4 is a great console, I'd still have to give MS the edge in the most important category, for me, which is exclusives. Sony has more, but a lot of what pushes them ahead is the smaller indie titles. Some people like these, fantastic, I haven't found a ton of indies I'm really a big fan of so for the types of games I like to play which are more the big budget titles, MS has done a better job providing those like @BAMozzy has suggested. I have 27 games for PS4 vs. 13 for my Xbox One but I actually have a good number more exclusives for the latter. Sony has had a better year in 2016 with Ratchet & Clank, MLB The Show and Uncharted 4 but again it all comes down to personal taste and while MS has been quiet this year with only Quantum Break (great game) so far, there will be another avalanche this fall with ReCore, Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4.
To the whole N64 vs. PSone debate. Big fan of the N64 but if I could go back knowing what I know, would've chose PlayStation. N64 had more classics, PSone had the far, far superior overall library. While I was waiting 6 months to a year for a good new game, my friends on PSone had something it seemed like almost every other week.
Greatness Awaits means You as a character in the games can become GREAT! Becoming larger than life persona in the things you do in the games.It's not about the PS4 or the games on PS4 Its you the hero, The racer, the Space explorer The sports athlete. What ever you play you can achieve greatness in the games. Greatness Awaits you to make it happen. On PS4 it will and in that moment you become Great.
love me some playstation, ftw
I just finished infamous second son and that game was really great . Unbelievable graphics smooth gameplay and most important it was super fun .Greatness = PS4 π
I can play the vast majority of the games on the PS4, sometimes with vastly better performance, on my PC.
I mean, it has some GREAT looking games releasing in the near future, but it is nowhere close to the amazing amount of quality and diversity exclusives that we saw on the SNES, PS1, and PS2.
Anybody know the song that's used in the trailer??
