Final Fantasy XV just can't catch a break, can it? Despite flaunting some stellar CG, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV - the game's movie tie-in - is being torn to bits by film critics. The newly released flick is currently sitting at a worrying 8% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 different reviews.
The movie's plot seems to be the biggest gripe of most critics - many of them concluding that the story is little more than an incoherent mess. Other reviews claim that the film's incredibly pretty but extremely boring. And, while some publications do concede that it may be worth a watch if you're a fan, the general feeling here is that the whole thing's rather rubbish.
Of course, movies that are tied to video games always end up walking a fine line between success and failure. Earlier this year, the Ratchet & Clank movie didn't go over too well with film critics, but we've seen plenty of series fans say that they enjoyed it. It's all about context, we suppose.

well as this is a movie made for Final Fantasy fans and not the critics, i'm not surprised they don't think much of it
it's made for fans of the series and as such i'm sure it will find it's market
Was anyone expecting anything different though?
I will get it no matter what the critics say. It is in the name. Just a lot of babies that need to feel good about by destroying something they don't like.
Hmmm i think that seals it for me. I had pre ordered the 80 quid steelbook S.E from game which came with this, but i just cannot see where the value is in that pack anymore, particularly compared to all the goodies on offer in the persona 5 S.E for the same price. Shopto have the day one edition of ff15 on preorder for 40 quid. Think i will cancel my preorder, get the standard 'day one' edition online and pick the movie up down the road.
(For the record agree with those above that movie is probably good for fans, it was never realistically going to review well with critics, who will probably only show an interest because of the voice cast)
Well that was a waste of effort, time and money.
I think most video game tie ins get pretty poor reviews and they often only really work if you then go and play the game - Dead Space, I'm looking at you.
The CGI does look gorgeous.
@Flaming_Kaiser Exactly! If there's one type of reviewer I NEVER trust, it's a movie critic, especially when it comes to video games. Roger Ebert once said, "video games can never be art" and I think that same kind of pretentiousness is standard fare for the industry.
Also...I still need to watch the Rachet + Clank movie!! And play the game!
I rather read the review from gaming website about this movie rather than critics, also it's 8.4 in imdb review.
I can't believe it.
@Nickolaidas
That record is still with Final Fantasy XV itself or The Last Guardian or Agent.
The fifteen minute or so clip I watched online doesn't seem very well-paced from a filmmaking perspective. It just looks like a really long video game cutscene.
I never listen to critic reviews, always wait for gamer reviews when it comes to movies based off of video games.
Nope can't take a movie critic serious I'll be watching this no matter what.
@ToddlerNaruto @wiiware Its got an 8.4 user score on metacritic sand im sure those users are gamers http://www.metacritic.com/movie/kingsglaive-final-fantasy-xv
I call upon thee fan boys! Attack!
Well, film critics are extremely harsh. I mean really harsh. I've seen some absolutely incredible movies it's scored 35%
This film is being rated on a scale alongside some of the greatest cinematic masterpieces in the history of mankind. You've got to take that into perspective.
I'm sure it's absolutely fine for a little throw in movie to go along with the game. It'll be worth a watch, I have no doubt.
No surprise there. Advent Children was horrific, and Spirits Within was only slightly better.
I mean, I'll still watch Kingsglaive, but I know what to expect - basically a long (albeit pretty) game cutscene.
@kupo Mark Kermode spouted the same line once whilst talking about games. Maybe art is only seen through the eyes of condescending self righteous diarrhea spouting film reviewers. Maybe if games were art I would of concentrated more in art class and picked that instead of music or religious studies for gcse. That's right I picked nonsensical made up stories about imaginary mystical powers and laughable rules written really badly by terrible scribes ahead of art. Games are better than art Kermode. Unless your talking about kingslaive a nonsensical made up story about imaginary mystical powers and laughable rules written really badly by terrible scribes.
While the story may not be as good as Advent Children along with some of the dialogue plus voice acting, I still found the action sequences entertaining to watch.
I think the low scores could just be from pretentious reviewers. I have not seen the movie, but Square is not that bad at making movies. Seriously. It is also thier business to come up with worlds that people enjoy.
@SKC_Diamond Thanks SKC, glad to hear most gamers enjoyed the film!
Yeah, I personally think its not really that good.
Like, "I have no idea what happening" for 80% of movie duration.
My mind kinda confused about what emotion to react about the whole thing so it ends up in stagnancy.
but the final scenes are okay.
at least
@kupo Waiting for the Bluray release at bol.com with Rachet and Clank.
@Kage_88 I totally disagree i really liked Advent Children. The Spirit Within looked really good but what it has to do with Final Fantasy?
@Kidfried Sorry i totally disagree sometimes the approach I laughable at best with movies. The big reviewers with their 0/1grades are a joke.
Reminds me of the Spirits Within film. That crashed and burned as well.
"Incredibly pretty but extremely boring"
So, exactly like Final Fantasy since IX, then?
@Flaming_Kaiser Fair enough, glad you liked it. I know many enjoyed AC. IMO, though Spirits Within had practically nothing to do with FF (aside from having a Cid, and 'Gaia' themes), it was still a better film. Probably because it used English as its native language, this making it seem more natural in its dialogue.
Hmmm... don't forget Hollywood critics deduct points if a film lacks: excessive swearing, bad morals, aggression, a win win ending, sexual innuendos, someone to hate, If it's not wholly made or produced in Hollywood, if you don't offer hospitality type parties, etc. I prefer the common man's view review than the bourgeois self pompous film critics anyday. I always ignore the critics and go straight to users reviews - we normal folk tell it like it is!
Nevermind. Advent Children is at 33% on rotten tomatoes and that's quite an interesting film if you like FF7. If you watched it with no knowledge of the franchise you'd be confused as hell. No doubt this'll find an audience.
Yeah, I watched the preview and it was complete garbage. Hope it's not indicative of Final Fantasy XV's game quality.
@goonow
DC is also good, and Suicide squad...
Just watched the movie.
The story is definitely not bad, it is just hard to follow and will make more sense with the game I guess.
I really loved the movie and can't wait for the game anymore! It really made me wanna play the game, which is I think what it was meant to be doing, plus giving some background story of what was happening before the episode duscea demo.
The users love it and I think that is all that matters. If SE wanted to bring it to everyone in the world I think I they would have promoted it a lot more but also changed a lot in the movie. Instead I think they just brought it for the fans, who follow what is going on with the game. It really feels like a long prologue of some sorts to ready you for the game.
I loved it and gladly keep the blu ray copy in my special edition.
PS: in Japan on many websites it is driving a rating above 4 stars with around thousand reviews per site.
@ekreig Guess what. That very purple octopus appears in Kingsglaive too.
Hollywood critics... those pretentious whine babies. My local cinema review board is better than so call critics' review...
