This is so bizarre: the PlayStation 4 Slim isn't even announced yet, but there are four available from the CEX in Widnes right now. Somehow, the unannounced console has filtered into the retail channel in the UK, with the leaks seemingly centred in the North Western part of the country. So, if you fancy one of the new systems right now, you may want to head to Cheshire before Sony beats you there.
It's worth mentioning that CEX deals with traded goods, so it's clear that these have been sold to the store having been "acquired" by someone direct from the source. It's currently commanding a mark-up for the consoles – one unit will cost you £380 to buy, which will obviously not be the recommended retail price. We wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese giant tried to seize these.
Those of you with strong memories may recall that a bunch of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End copies leaked in the UK, too, so it's clear that Sony's got an issue somewhere in its British-based supply chain. It may want to sniff that rat out before long, because these leaks are becoming increasingly damaging. We mean, the PS4 Slim isn't even announced yet, but it's all over the web – and even for sale in some stores.
Weird.

That is weird, but then so is the idea of going in a CeX, especially to pay over the odds for a console that looks inferior to the otherwise identical cheaper alternative..
sony really should just annoujce it already. wasnt gonna be the main focus of the meeting anyway, whats done is done.
Are CeX a franchise or independent chain? Really stupid of one of their stores to sell console that isn't out yet, if it's the latter. Well, it's really stupid both ways, but more so if it's not some unscrupulous franchisee.
Easy solution, stop shipping items to the UK and remove all Playstation's from that limey paradise.
CeX are an absolute shower, much the same as Game. I hope Sony take them to the cleaners for selling what's clearly stolen and unreleased goods already.
@Drawfull They're a franchise. There's one in most UK cities/high streets.
@get2sammyb Thanks, not lived there for 20 years.
@Drawfull Like most second hand shops, CEX has thrived on the misery of the poor. My local one always houses a weird smell, too.
@Drawfull @get2sammyb They are a mix of corporate and franchise stores, a la McDonalds. After working there for 3 years I can backup @ShogunRok claim, CEX always smells, usually because of the consumers who do not wash, AT ALL. I would just wait until its actually release, you won't get the free cig smell on the consoles as well
I really don't get why people use CeX, they give virtually nothing for trade ins compared with online sites, and charge way too much for secondhand stuff.
These are clearly stolen from a retail wharehouse the numbers are too small to have been jacked on route. So there is a chance the police will take it away and Sony will ban your account the second you connect one of these to the internet.
@stocko @ShogunRok ewwww
Sony should hire some Nintendo ninjas to clean up this mess. NX launches in 7 months and we don't even know if it's a home console, handheld or hybrid of both. I think it's being designed and built on the far side of the moon by the Inhumans.
But seriously, don't overpay for this, buy the old one or wait 3 weeks. Unless you work for Push square, then by all means do pick one of these up, crack it open, and show us what's inside. I'm curious if they shrunk the CPU die size.
CEX are as almost as bad Cash Converters. The goods are either stolen or from someone who had to trade in items to buy themselves a packet of fags while foregoing food for the day. I am surprised this issue with the slim hasn't led to the store being shut down as the goods are clearly stolen in one way shape or form.
@Draythedestroyer What about the people who don't know this isn't even supposed to be out yet?
Whoever traded this in should have sold it on ebay would have got more for it. Selling to CEX is like getting robbed in the street.
@dryrain Crackheads haven't got the patience for ebay.
@professorhat completely disagree by the time you pay eBay fees, postage and have to deal with some of the cretinous little scum bags that loiter on eBay I'm more than happy to use CEX and trade games in for vouchers.
If you wait a month or two for new releases they are very reasonable (£25 for Uncharted 4 for example), all their stuff is guaranteed as well.
I seriously doubt they are stolen, they come out in a matter of weeks so will already be stocked by outlets. Itll be whoever sold them on who would get problems from Sony nothing to do with a reseller.
So is cex like a gamestop in europe?
@bbauer36 it sells and buys second hand games and electronics.
I tend to buy retail stuff on offer then trade it to CeX when done and hold onto vouchers and buy other stuff when it's cheaper. Works a lot better for me than ebaying.
People harping on about robbery clearly don't buy digital games then, cause as far as I'm concerned, Sony charging £50 for something with no resale is a lot worse.
@rjejr NX ain't launching in seven months. I bet you it gets pushed to Fall 2017.
@Cron_13 very different experience to me then. I got almost double what CeX offered me from an online game trade in place - no ebay fees or "cretinous little scum bags" (although if you find ebay that bad, just use one of the other online sales sites). I just popped them in the post and 3 or 4 days later the money was in my account and I could use it to buy anything I wanted, not over priced secondhand tat.
@professorhat if I'm right it's a franchise so I guess there is different customer experiences throughout the country but all the ones I've used near me have been great and I'll continue to use them.
I like the fact I can use vouchers online and order stuff that is rarer and can't be found in store as easily.
No interest in auction sites, maybe it's because I'm older but I really CBA to waste my time when CeX works great.
I hadn't even heard of Cex until about a month ago when one of my mates who does nothing but claim benefits and sponge off everyone else called me to say he found an `amazing` shop in town and he had paid only a few quid for some second hand ps2 games and that I should check it out..
As for the PS4 Slim,who exactly would pay nearly £400 for one anyway?the people that go in there are obviously looking for a deal or cheap stuff..
@Cron_13 as I say, I don't use auction sites either, but if CeX works for you, then that's good - I guess it must for many people considering how many there are now - I've been to some towns where there are two within a few minutes walking distance!
You're the first person I've ever talked to who actually had something positive to say about them though!
I've been in a few CEX stores and they all smelled funky. The staff are always either emos or punks. It's pretty decent for the some classic PS2 games, though.
you know i work in Retail and i can tell you it is actually ILLEGAL to sell a product like this before it's official release date, even if you got it via trade ins like CeX
if this is real and not just a bunch of modded standard PS4's someone has made and Sony could find what chain/company is selling it they could sue the pants of them
@professorhat think it depends how you play it as well though. If someone buys a retail game at £50 plays it for a month then yeah they are only going to get 50% value as it is less popular so the price drops.
If you can wait though and buy at the right price and sell at the right time it works really well.
AVforums seems to be a solid option for some people but again I find the whole hassle of postage, packaging and so on just not worth the effort to make a few extra quid.
Sony doesn't even need a press conference at this point. Just release it worldwide, everybody knows everything about it.
@Cron_13 ah you see, with a 10 month old, I certainly don't have the ability to plan out my gaming in that way - I bought UC4 a while ago and am only on chapter 3! I might have completed it early next year (emphasis on might!)
@Drawfull They're a country-wide franchise
I'm not too surprised, if anything dodgy is gonna happen it'll probably involved CEX!
If this was the Neo I'd be there by now, but PS Slim? nah, think I'll pass..! lol
@morrisseymuse Thanks as well, I no longer live in the UK, haven't for 20 years!
@get2sammyb Zelda yes, but they kind of need NX. Though it would make sense, March is a horrible time to launch. But it's Ntineod, and in case nobody told you they are completely insane, and they can't read a calendar to save their lives. But I think they've been telling their shareholders and investors March for too long to back out now, even if it makes sense. But if it happens, I will come back to congratulate you. Well maybe on Twitter so I don't derail another thread.
@Octane if they're stolen then the law doesn't care if you're a clued up consumer they will take it off you if the theft is reported and tracked back to you.
@ShogunRok that's usually the staff. Personal hygiene isn't their strong point. I know from experience.
One good thing about CEX is that Game price match trade ins with CEX and give you £1 extra. They put it on a gift card and you can spend it on what you want. Gives you a lot more options what to sepnd your money on.
So if these systems have been stolen why hasn't anyone been arrested yet?
I'm in Warrington, 10 minutes away. If anyone wants one I'll go get it for ya! He he
They were definitely kinda sorta gonna do some kind of "ps4 slim available NOW" reveal during the playstation meeting. It's the only way I can see this being so prevalent and already being sold before it's even announced.
If in uk, always check thats entertainment before CEX or Game. They are owned by music magpie and offer same prices in store as online. I was offered 3 pounds and 2.50 respectively when i traded in 3d dot game heroes on ps3 a couple of months ago....thats entertainment gave me 15. Online value without the hassle of ebay!
@get2sammyb And have another 6-7 months with no games? Don't think they really have a choice haha!
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi *not scousers
@Octane My opinion is that February/March/April is an awful time to release a new console, and summer would be even worse. I think it has to be next holiday.
I've been wrong before, though, so we'll see.
@dryrain correct they do. Heads up game gift cards only last 2 years. I've just been stung by that and didn't know it was a stipulation.
As Dryrain says, before you go out and part exchange your gear, get the prices from CEX / Grainger games and Game have to beat it by a quid. The only issue I've found is Game have the worst trade in values off the bat and the instore pricing of games is mad, you can find four of the same game all priced differently. But otherwise a quick mooch on the internet can nett you a quick win and is a top tip before heading the shops.
@Cron_13 timing is important as you mentioned, if a game has a sequel I've found those games plummet in value. If your selling Fifa do it in April or May and you get £20plus back, sell it in September and you would be lucky to get £5. Poor selling retail games which have reviewed well also hold value as they are rarer. If your part exchange is mentioned as a psplus game trade it asap.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi scousers wouldn't generally go to widnes unless it's a necessity. I'm scouse and haven't been there for about 20 years! And that was for, ahem... saucy reasons.
