Good news for tech-heads who get excited by motherboards and cooling fans: the PlayStation 4 Slim will support 5GHz Wi-Fi, apparently. Shortmaneighty2, who already has his grubby mitts on the console, posted two photographs to prove the point: one from the console's manual, mentioning the added frequency – and the other from the console itself, showcasing a new option allowing you to pick which band you want to use.
This is all expected, of course, as leaked documentation recently suggested that Sony had a new Wi-Fi receptor in the works. The hope here is that the new module will enable better download speeds, but the proof will be in the pudding. You can bet that this new component will find its way into the PS4K (or Neo) as well, though, so fingers crossed it does the job, eh?

That's good news I always use wired connection so I'm good.
Wait, why did you mention USB but not describe it? Does it have 3.0?
And it will need 5GHz for the new DS4 LiveStream, aka Sonys Wii u Gamepad, for remote play. I just think they are done with Vita but not with handhelds, handhelds are just too popular in Japan. Viva la cloud! Le cloud?
THANK THE LORD. PS4 download speeds for me have been absolute trash in comparison to the Xbox One in the house.
@rjejr I was just being silly.
@get2sammyb ok, thanks for the clarification.
So, um, how many USB ports are there? I did the math yesterday (after an NX rumour of 2 ports) and I am currently using 6 on my Wii U, thanks to a 4 port hub - 3 toy portals, thumb drive, ethernet adapter, charging cable for Pro controller.
I test drove an X1 S and the only thing I really liked was 5Ghz.
Sony very much needs this, I was getting 80mbs download speed.
Tfw you want to replace your OG ps4 with a slim just for better download speeds
@Neolit It can't be because the existing PS4 doesn't support it.
@rjejr There are two on the Slim.
Thank God - I'm tired of downloading 15GB games with 200KB/sec speeds. Christ.
Whats the advantage of 5mhz over 2.4?
It's about 3X faster, I believe. IF you have a dual band router and good internet.
Imho the wire is still the best option for any console, data quantities are just too big for a Wi Fi solutions. The biggest let down is no optical out it is a huge "bad apple" for Sony.
@get2sammyb Thanks, guess it's time to buy another hub. Does PSVR use one of those, and the camera the other? Don't think I've ever seen a picture of it all hooked up.
@Neolit Props for the edit rather than just deleting the post, I'm sure you're not the only person who thought that. I just got a 5GHz router not too long ago and everything connects just fine, of course it's connecting at 2.4 but I had to do some research to figure out what was what, hadn't been keeping up with the alphabet soup of wifi.
@SecondServing if you saw my nba 2k16 download photos over 7/8 days you would agree its best to upgrade. 2ghz sux.
Meh. Id rather have optical. It's a shame that it doesn't have it as if this is a smaller manufacturing node as you would expect then it will run far cooler and quieter than the standard ps4.
I would have got one if it had optical.
@Neolit I looked at some PS4 slim pics and I suppose there is a camera port in the back, I thought ithat was USB but it's too square.
I've been waiting for Neo but I have a feeling when I see the Black Friday prices I'll be picking up a slim.
Does the PS4 Slim beep when you power it on?
Too bad this will be useless for Vita Remote Play since no Vita supports 5 GHz.
"but the proof will be in the pudding."
It's the proof will be in tasting the pudding.
5GHz has been around for quite a number of years.
Still nothing beats cable.
@j1965 same. good old network cable
OMG a 5ghz Wi-Fi...amazing I must rush out and pre order the pointless console because it has.........WIFI groundbreaking stuff Sony GJ. Any new's on a wired controller or anything that could be usefull? No? Didn't think so. I'm also wired up and most people I play with are because it's by far superior to Wifi. Does anybody use Wifi unless they absolutely have to?!?!?
@Nickolaidas
Try this:
Go to "Settings".
Go to "Network".
Go to "Set Up Internet Connection"
Select Wifi/LAN depending on what you use to connect.
Select "Custom".
IP Address Settings = Automatic.
DHCP Host Name = Do Not Specify.
DNS Settings = Manual. Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8. Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4.
Enjoy better download speeds.
