NieR: Automata is absolutely the kind of game that's never going to be a mainstream success, but it certainly sounds as though the recently released action role-playing title has done well for itself. Publisher Square Enix has revealed that the game's topped one million across shipments and digital sales - a promising figure.
Automata director Yoko Taro - yes, that's the guy who wears the mask - took to Twitter to express his gratitude, writing: "Thank you so.......so much. I can't describe by my poor English. But thank you," followed by a little crying face. Awwwww.

Good stuff, hopefully some more sequels to come. It's not perfect but it excels where it counts and it's the first "long" openworld RPG that I haven't found tiresome. Number 2 on my GoTY list so far.. under Resi 7
It's awesome game I'm 52 hours in the game trying to get all the endings and all the trophies and can't get enough plus is a very sad but intriguing story. This is good news I hope there a sequel down the road
Really impressive achievement for such a niche title, and well deserved.
Well-deserved. Glad it didn't get lost among the Horizons, Zeldas, and Resident Evils of late.
@KratosMD Yeah.. it also helps that your character moves quickly through the environments. Going back to Horizon I was groaning when I had to trudge half way across the map for something. Yeah it's pretty but after 40 hours the novelty of that wears off. And yeah, you can fast travel, but if you're going to do that why bother playing an open world game? Nier actually feels quicker to just go on foot than it does to fast travel most the time.
It deserve it and even more. Great surprise and the best game of the bunch that came out in march, in my opinion.
I've notice Japanese games seem to be more popular now and odd niche titles like this, Nioh and Yakuza seem to be doing well for themselves.
Whilst big AAA western games aren't doing so well, many people are changing their taste?
Well deserved. Got the platinum last night and I enjoyed every minute of my time with it.
Now if only Gravity Rush 2 would sell this many copies...
This is fantastic news, I'm very happy for them! Always thought that it wouldn't do great commercially, due to the release window. I've been trying to push it to people I know, it's a true masterpiece imo.
Congrats to yoko taro and platinum games, I believe this is the first time yoko taro game has sold 1M plus. I think playstation is the true home of yoko taro and platinum.
I really like the settings, characters and story of this game, I hope yoko taro, platinum and squareenix will continue their relationship.
Just picked this up yesterday, absolutely fantastic game, a really interesting, weird and kinda sad storyline.
I hope word of mouth and gradual price reduction gets more people playing, deserves it
GOTY far as I'm concerned. It's so rare to find something like this which hasn't been compromised in any way. It's art. Pure and simple.
Excellent news for an excellent game. Still during my 2nd play-through, Horizon completely on hold, Persona 5 will remain unopened until I am done with this.
Heck yes. Bring on NieR Automata 2 babyyyyyyyy.
I'm glad, hope square didn't expect this too sell 5 million like tomb raider or anything though.
I finished the third playthrough this past weekend and really really enjoyed the game. Awesome game even with its flaws. Music is great too.
Shipped NOT SOLD!
@Gold_Ranger So you think shops are just sitting on hundreds of thousands of unsold units?
@kyleforrester87
Yeah, they shipped the copies to stores, all the stores have copies on hand. They speciffically said shipped. They never said anything about sold.
@Gold_Ranger My point is that shops are not in the habit of over ordering a ton of stock to sit in a warehouse. So yes, while shipped isn't the same as sold we can certainly deduce from this that they are on track to break a million sales.
Just bought this digitally a few hours ago. Was trying to decide between this and persona and decided to go with nier. Mostly because I played demo and liked it and have never played a persona game. 🤔
