Wow, now this is one weird story. CD Projekt Red, the developer behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has released a statement saying that internal files have been stolen from the company. Said files apparently contain information regarding the studio's upcoming title, Cyberpunk 2077.
With this in mind, whoever's nicked the files has tried to hold the developer to ransom, claiming that they'll leak the information to the general public if their demands aren't met. Yeah, we told you this was weird.
In a rather professional move, CD Projekt Red has said that it won't be submitting to the thief's demands, even if it means that information about Cyberpunk 2077 does leak out. However, the Polish outfit has stressed that the files are "old", and don't necessarily have much to do with the project in its current state. So, if you do see any leaked info making the rounds in the near future, try not to take it too seriously.
What do you make of this madness? Pretend you're in a dystopian future in the comments section below.

And this is why we dont announce a game god knows how far in advance.
Then again this also happened with the recent Pirates movie. Maybe its a trend.
@BLP_Software To be honest, I think any project announced or not from CD Projekt Red is going to be of interest to people after TW3.
They should go rogue, Mel Gibson/Ransom style until they get it back.
Hopefully the media ignores these leaks. Publishing/promoting them would just encourage this type of behavior.
Wierd. A big leak actually happened during the development of Witcher 3, where a bunch of production files, including story stuff were leaked and CD Projket Red issued an official statement and strongly advised not to access the files.
The douchebags who stole the info will get little admiration from anyone in gaming. If there's one company that has always treated it's fans right it's CD Projekt RED, and holding them to ransom will just be seen as a huge move by most people in the community
It's either a great marketing gimmick or a bit sad from the hackers.
If it's the latter I can envisage a load of crackdowns on how the intertubes works in the future.
Believe or not holding data to ransom isn't uncommon in this day & age. Criminals are making their way online because doing stuff like this is a lot less time and very unlike to get caught in the first place.
And now, we know one of the post-launch DLC missions the game will have.
Thieving b******s. I hope the Wild Hunt come for them.
@ApostateMage Geralt might be sniffing them down as we type.
Good for Cd Projekt Red. Dont give in to these demands. If people online want to look at any files that are released and potentially spoil their enjoyment of the game then that's their problem. No company should ever feel they need to give in to such demands. Even if CDPR did pay, absolutely no guarentee that the files wouldn't be released any way
God CD Project really can't put a foot wrong these days, first they release a great game, then all the free dlc, the great and long dlc, now they're responding to pirates in the correct way. Their like the saviours of the gaming industry
This sounds like it could a quest line from the actual game.
If I were them, I'd say they were old and not representative, too. all about damage control.
Seriously? CD Project? Not Capcom, not EA, not Ubisoft, not Activision?
Of all the developers in the gaming world, you had to be a beep to CD Project? One of the few devs who actually respect their audience and don't treat them as mindless pouches of gold?
Go off yourself, dude. Seriously.
They could leak every detail of the game and I'm still buying it day one.
This is so stupid. Yeah let's demand money (I assume?) and then force the company to NOT be able to finish the game or hold up development because they don't have the money to pay employees...
An unfortunate situation.
>inb4 viral marketing
Well if they leak now they will be branded as criminal. Depending on which country they live, they may be arrested.
Awful to hear. But I think the best course would be for CD Projekt Red to refuse any demands, and the public to not spread any leaks and shut them down.
CD Project Red Deserves Everyone's support. They do amazing work for gamers. I have been looking forward to Cyber Punk 2077 for years. Hope to see a collectors Edition. It will be mine day one! No one is going to spoil this for me.
@JohnKarnes They make a quality product, support it, and care about player feedback. You can't get any better than that.
Cyberpunked.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi I am a pretty big fan of their handling of TW3.
