CD Projekt Red has recently spoken at the Pareto Securities Gaming Seminar 2018, and one specific comment has caught the attention of Cyberpunk 2077 fans.
On one of the slides during the developer's presentation, it states that the elusive game will be built on "current and next generation technology". Now, you'll need to take this with a bucket of salt, as it's a bit of a stretch, but this has spawned speculation that Cyberpunk 2077 will be a cross-generation title - that is, a PS4 and PS5 game.
Of course, this could mean a whole host of things. "Next generation technology" might not mean platforms, it could be referring to development tools, middleware, or any number of behind-the-scenes tech that we're not privy to. There is a small chance this could mean we see Cyberpunk on PS5, but one, indirect quote like this isn't nearly enough to go on.
Cyberpunk 2077 is said to be appearing at E3 2018 in a few months, so perhaps we'll hear some clarification then.

Well if the smart money is on PS5 to come out late 2019 then it's likely
We know that development of PS5/Xbox Whateveritscalled is pretty much in full swing at this point. Given that game development takes quite a while, I do think Cyberpunk 2077 will be a cross-gen title. Also, that '2077' in the name could refer to when it's coming out
Looks at the words nextgen... Looks at my backlog..... Starts to cry.... I'm so not ready for nextgen ._.
@Turismo4GT I wonder if Microsoft will have harder time justifying a new Xbox so soon after X. At least if or when Sony announce PS5 it will probably be seen as a much more compelling upgrade over PS4.
Man if they really release PS5 next year...what a waste
If PS5 is backwards compatible it's going to interesting to see what happens with cross-gen games.
Holiday 2019 rocking a PS5! Feel free to quote me next year.
@AFCC
Thats why i am glad i held off on buying the Pro or X. i am just waiting on the Real next generation to start. In 2019 or 2020
@YummyHappyPills KH3 since it's coming out this year.
@adf86 Honestly I don't think Microsoft is so concerned about making the Next Xbox come in at around the same time as the PS5. Look at the recent moves they've been making. Along with the fact that the Xbox One X is practically a 'next generation' console (save for that crappy CPU) I think they'll leverage their Direct X technologies and 'cloud computing' and also drop support for the weaker Xbox One / S to let the X really fly.
@AFCC I wouldn't really worry about Sony releasing PS4 next year. Sure, they may announce it next year at E3, but the PS4 has been such a huge success that I don't think they want to do anything that may unnaturally upset its momentum. I think they want to give the PS4 a nice send off.
@DashingGold1 glad I wasn't dumb enough to buy it over christmas x)
@Turismo4GT they can still squeeze the PS4! It can still make games that look great
I think this just means for instance on PC it'll look phenomenal and sure eventually it could get a re-release on PS5.
Similar to how Crysis was future-proof and when it released barely anyone could play it on max settings.
@AFCC I wholeheartedly agree. I was playing Ratchet & Clank last night, and even though it's an 'old' game at this point, I'm still in awe at how closely they made it resemble the CG movie. The PS4 is a very capable machine and still has a few tricks up it's sleeve, namely a slew of talented developers that know how to make it sing (jet sounds notwithstanding).
Not sure when this game is coming out, let's say it's 2019 or 2020, PS5 could be available during that time, so it could be a cross-gen game.
@DashingGold1 I always want to buy a Pro, but I'm on the same boat, just waiting for the PS5.
Imagine if this is a PS5 launch game, crikey, best launch game of all time.
I'd buy it twice because we know it's going to be amazing.
Personally, I think they mean PC hardware technology. After all, they are first and foremost a PC gaming developer.
However, considering how popular remasters have become I would not be surprised if they are planning for both a PS4 and PS5 ("remaster") release.
Heck, they will probably release Witcher 3 for the PS5 as well.
I'm definitely feeling that PS5 is coming late 2019. It's still quite a way away and yeah, it's potentially gonna annoy anyone who buys a Pro between now and then but that's just technology for you, really.
I'm excited to see what they can do next gen.
I remember when PS4 first game out and a lot of people were sceptical of whether it was really that big a jump from the PS3. People kind of thought that "it's all HD now" imo. Obviously not everyone's got 4K now but the difference between the best of PS4 and the best of PS3 is now as big as the difference between PS2 and PS3. If we get that kind of leap again (and no reason to suggest we shouldn't) to the PS5 it's gonna be incredible.
@PS_Nation i already got a pro.its so beautiful and quiet i love the controler.on the ps4 pro.word up son.by the way ps5 is coming 2021 worddd uppp sonnn
@ShogunRok no doubt in my mind ps5 will be backwards compatible with ps4 games. i assume there will be some performance boosts, graphical fidelity improvements and better textures with the "native ps5" port of games compared to the "native ps4" ports... that said, i am certain ps5 will be the equivalent of ps4 pro in the sense that it will also give you the some improvements with base ps4 games.
@roe ps5 is not coming in 2019.2021 its coming.and i do agree the exclusive is a big jump from ps3 to ps4.look at infamous 2 vs secon son.killzone 3 vs shadowfall.uncharted 3 vs uncharted 4.ratchet and clank ps3 vs ps4.word up son
other games i can see being ported on both, ps4 and ps5, are death stranding and possibly last of us 2. then again, with ps5 likely to be backwards compatible with all ps4 games, maybe there is less incentive to do so. it will depend on the engine the developer is utilizing, if there are any major improvements that can be gained with a ps5 port and if it is financially viable to do so. i expect ps5 to launch end of 2019 or end of 2020 at the latest, so death stranding and last of us 2 are going to get pretty close to the gen 9 threshold.
Can see it being revealed in 2019 but actual release, late 2020 for me.
@playstation1995 Word up my son.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if this game does come out on PS5 too. There are rumours that the PS5 dev kits are in the hands of 3rd party developers now which, if true, would almost certainly mean they are in the hands of Sonys first party studio's. It doesn't make sense to give out Dev kits years in advance as specs can change and mess up their development of games.
The X is all but a next gen console in name and CPU - much more RAM and faster (50% more than the Pro with 60% more available for gaming and 50% faster than the Pro's too), much more powerful GPU (4.6x over the OG XB1 and a whole PS4 more powerful than the Pro), as well as 'next' gen features like Atmos and Game VRR. I know the S also has Atmos but that also has a 4k HDR Bluray player and those tend to offer Atmos so it needed that to be 'competitive' with stand-alone players. Its a far cry from the PS4 with literally just a bolted on extra GPU but the design goals seem different with the Pro intentionally just a PS4 with a GPU to double resolution only but the X is more of a 4k next gen console - nerfed a bit by the CPU.
I can't see Sony not wanting to offer a 4k generation console and that doesn't mean that the PS4 is dead - despite visual levels dropping as complexity increases - its still a great HD console so it makes sense that Sony make a 4k era console and that we see games releasing on both generations.
I can see MS dropping 'parity' with the S - although that will probably come first from the 3rd party devs whilst MS exclusives work across both. Its no secret that the XB1 is struggling with the demands of current games to even offer similar performance and visual settings to the other consoles (inc the base PS4) at even 720p - lower shadow quality or draw distances just to deliver similar performance. I am sure MS would be happy to let a game release that only runs on the X rather than miss out on it entirely because the OG/S XB1 can't run it - that will happen sooner than it will with the PS4 of course. Also, because the PS4 and Pro are much closer in performance, a game that can't run at even 720p on a PS4, isn't going to run at 1080p on a Pro so that won't fulfil Sony's criteria for the Pro - let alone maintaining parity.
As with all consoles, you don't wait until the console is 'dead' before bringing out a new one (generally) and that's certainly Sony's philosophy so far. Sony often has the longest cross-over phase where both old and new generations co-exist. The base PS4 wasn't built as complex or advanced as the PS3 (for example) and its weakness is one of the reasons we saw iterative consoles this generation - if anything to enable Sony to get to the 5/6yr point rather than release a 'next gen' after 3-4yrs...
@BAMozzy Do think because of the 4K HDR in the next gen PS5 that it would be able to be backwards compatible with PS4 games?
I for one can't wait for this game.
@DashingGold1 I know, right? I still haven't quite caught up on my PS3 games — close though! And my Nintendo backlog is generations behind...
@BAMozzy The Pro has 4K and HDR. Sure, more of it is checkerboarded, and the frame rate at 4K is lower than the XB1X, but I think you're selling it short. The XB1X could be leagues behind a PS5, whenever it does come out, unless Sony is planning to come in at a very low price point. Since the 1X was released only recently, however (and I own one), I'm hoping M-soft does indeed plan to release a new console or new upgrade later than sooner...
Could it be that PS4 will be getting a $100 price-drop this November/December?! If so brand spanking new PS4 Slim, here I come!
All they have to do is give Cyberpunk 2077 settings like they do for PC on every game! PS4 Mid and PS5 Ultra settings. Next gen PlayStation and Xbox will release close to the same time. Giving the other a advantage of a player base before you launch is a mistake. People who are not early adopters buy what their friends have. Xbox 360 had a lot of support because it launched a year before PS3 and had built a player base.
They better not! Been waiting years to play this on ps4, won't be buying the ps5 straight away... 😟
@starhops the 4k HDR isn't what will determine if the PS5 is able to be Backwards Compatible with PS4 games. That is more determined by the Architecture and OS of the next gen console - and even whether Sony want to add it or not. They haven't been 'keen' this generation and may find it more lucrative to expand PSNow and offer 'remasters' than offer BC. Any potential loss of sales of hardware (not that its affected PS4) can be offset by subscriptions and sales of remasters.
@doctommaso I am not selling the Pro short - I have one myself and a LOT of the games are not able to offer more than 1440p. 1800p CB (games like GTSport for example) is actually only rendering 50% more pixels than 1080p and whilst CB is a very good method of delivering the quality of a higher resolution, its still not as good as native quality would deliver. Don't get me wrong, I would take 1800p CB over native 1440p - even though native 1440p is actually rendering a lot more pixels per frame.
A number of games though aren't even UHD and those that are generally up to 1440p. In HD terms, what we are getting is 540-720p on average with a few using CB to get 900-1080p but are actually rendering 2x450-540p. If the PS4 was claiming to be a full HD console but most games ran at 540-720p, then it is falling short.
The PS5 is likely to offer a much better CPU which would enable more games to run at 60fps - the games that are generally 30fps on current consoles - inc the X. 60fps modes (like we see in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider) would obviously show the biggest difference as those would be 60fps as standard without needing to drop the render time by reducing the resolution. In other words, you would get 4k/60 on PS5, 4k/30 or 1080/60 on X. The difference in visuals is that most PS5 games will be native 4k compared to say 1800p average on the X or at least enable higher visual settings - better shadow quality, draw distance etc. Textures would be the same as both would use the higher quality assets.
Like I said, I expect the PS5 to be more like the PS4 was to the XB1. Games would have a similar resolution difference 1800 vs 2160 is the same gap as 900 vs 1080p BUT because Sony will use a significantly better CPU, the biggest difference will be 30 vs 60fps - maybe not in CoD or other 60fps games but then Sony will be native 4k and X using dynamic resolution that may drop as low as 1440p but probably average around 1750p.
If Sony do wait until 2019, MS could afford to wait until 2020 and then release a console to beat Sony. If Sony were to release in 2018, MS couldn't really release an upgrade - not one that makes sense as it already offers almost everything that a next gen would (bar the CPU) until 2020 and then in 2021 Sony could just release a PS5 Pro. In every area, Sony can make a significant upgrade to its PS4 Pro - Atmos, Game VRR, more RAM, Better CPU, better GPU, 4k HDR Bluray playback... If MS were looking to beat the X, the only areas that they can improve realistically to make a difference is just CPU and GPU. More RAM wouldn't make much difference to games - just the dash - already offers all the rest....
Cant wait for the day when systems can run EVERY game at a constant 60fps AT LEAST.
THAT imo would make a system seem truly "next gen". Weve already got incredible graphics and resolution, lets get this realistic motion down please.
@BAMozzy Wow, well... you are clearly much more informed about all the details than I am. That is rather enlightening. In any case, I'd love to see both consoles shine.
@adf86 It’s way to obvious, PS4 28nm Fall 2013, PS4 Pro 16nm Fall 2016 and PS5 7nm Fall 2019, Future on Sony will be sticking with the PS4/ PS4 Pro set up every 3 years.
@Eman619 I'm probably fine with that.
@BAMozzy For the longest time you’ve been saying PS5 will launch Fall 2018, that never made sense one bit PS5 is obviously launching 6 years after PS4 and 3 years after PS4 Pro. PS4 28nm Fall 2013, PS4 Pro 16nm Fall 2016 and PS5 7nm Fall 2019.
Nvidia showed next GEN graphic card , so it`s not necessarily means they`re talk about console GEN. plus they said "next generation technology" ; it could be a next level in motion capture , or in design or anything else. I mean we don`t know what they`re talking about.
Let me guess . If game come out in 2020 or 2021 it can be fresh start for gaming world.
(Leak says that game will have a new trailer in E3(2018) right? so it`s not too far to see release date at 2020 or 2021)
this will 110% happen, i can see ps5 announce e3 2019 with launch early 2020, CP2077 is going to shake up the industry either way
I still feel 2020 is an appropriate soft launch for PS5, that way next gen technology will be readily available and cheaper, I mean realistically, theres's not much room to improve from, sure 4k 60fps should be a definite lock in and obviously a slight update on graphics, textures, mapping etc that 4K will afford, but we are a long long long way away from 8K even hitting mass market.
Plus, i'm sure Sony will be seeing how the 4K TV market goes over the next year or so before fully committing to release the PS5, im definitely expecting a range of new affordable Sony 4k's bundled with a Pro to be pushed in the next year or so as a prelude to any next gen console.
