It's been three years since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released, and it still stands as one of the very best games of this generation. The best in my humble opinion -- but regular readers will be sick and tired of hearing me say that. I know not everyone feels the same way about Geralt of Rivia's last hurrah, but I don't think anyone can deny the impact that the game has had. For me, it's still so far ahead of the pack -- it still blows just about every other modern, Western role-playing title out of the water.
Nothing has really come close to topping it -- but that may not be the case for much longer. At E3 2018, we're going to see Cyberpunk 2077, and it's hard to shake the feeling that CD Projekt Red is once again gearing up to smash all expectations. It may fall to the Polish developer to outdo its own masterpiece.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a weird one, though. Believe it or not, the game was first announced all the way back in 2013 with an intriguing CG trailer -- more than two years before The Witcher 3 launched. It's clear that since then, the project has become something bigger -- something that CD Projekt Red is willing to pour all of its resources into. Following in the footsteps of The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 should be the studio's next blockbuster.
And there's every chance that it'll dwarf even its predecessor's success. With every main title that it pumps out, the developer moves forward. The Witcher 2 was better than The Witcher, and The Witcher 3 was better again. As dangerous as expectations can be, Cyberpunk 2077 is pretty much expected to outshine its predecessor, despite the fact that The Witcher 3 sits at a score of 92 on Metacritic. And if that's not an exciting prospect, I don't know what is.
It's been more than five years since we saw anything of Cyberpunk 2077 -- at least, if you count the CG trailer as seeing something -- and that's mental. For five years this game has been cloaked in mystery. We know the basics -- it's an RPG, it's going to have guns, it's going to be cyberpunk -- but any details that have dripped from behind closed doors may not even apply to the project's current form. The title's a looming, unknown entity that we've been waiting years to see, and the curtain's going to fall next month on the biggest stage of all.
Unless Cyberpunk 2077 somehow puts in a disappointing showing, I think it could quite easily dominate E3 this year. Because we've seen nothing of the game, it captures the imagination. I watched Blade Runner 2049 for the first time the other night -- a visually stunning movie -- and I sat there thinking "Cyberpunk 2077 is going to look like this in video game form, isn't it?" That thought alone was enough to get me hyped.
Usually, having seen nothing of a game years in the making promotes some scepticism, but the thought that Cyberpunk 2077 could fall flat on its face at E3 almost seems laughable. That's how much trust CD Projekt Red has earned off the back of The Witcher 3.
As for what will actually be shown at E3 2018, it looks as though we're in for a good old fashioned gameplay reveal. Probably at the Xbox press conference, if I had to guess. An extended gameplay demo will apparently be shown privately to members of the press, leading me to believe that this is going to be a proper blowout. It's about time, I suppose.
Cyberpunk 2077 can take the Los Angeles convention by storm. It may be a game that we've been waiting on for a long time, but that'll only serve to make its unveiling all the more electric. Of course, all of this assumes that CD Projekt Red will get it right -- but at this point, would you really bet against it?

Well which will it be? Ghost of Tsushima or Cyberpunk that will dominate?
Ghost of Tsushima, Kojima's insanity, Naughty Dog the Holy Grail, Cyberpunk finally showing up, a release date for KH3, maybe even seeing this mythical project called Final Fantasy 7 Remake, or watching some sweaty nerds beat each other up on a stage in a Wii U port.
Gonna be a good year if all but the last one comes true.
@Broosh
If they show up (which I’m sure they will), I’m sure it will dominate. Easily my most anticipated game currently, and I’ve got a lot of confidence in CDPR to deliver a solid step up from W3.
@VR_Gamer Not yet.
@VR_Gamer
Not yet, no. There's been no proper reveal yet. Soon.
I have no doubt it will be good but I don't think it will live up to the hype, at least for now!
Besides that nothing will beat Death Stranding if they show gameplay
@3MonthBeef Because CD Projekt Red
@3MonthBeef Could try reading the article!
I'm amped for this game but I will always be a little cautious until I hear more. Cd have always delivered but even amazing companies can trip sometimes. I doubt it will suck but will it be amazing is the big question.
@3MonthBeef The article explains why. Mostly because The Witcher 3 was so brilliant.
Did not like the Witcher 3 so I would need to be convinced to buy this. I would take Skyrim over Witcher 3 any day of the week.
This is the game I'm most looking forward to seeing more of at E3. Everything else is a bonus.
Pray to god there's no smart-arsed decision trees or endless QTEs
It'd be cool if they allowed you to hack into corporate servers and take on mercenary jobs like the Genesis version of Shadowrun. There's a LOT of potential in a cool, futuristic setting.
Of course, I'm also excited for (possibly) Pokemon, Metroid Prime, and Fire Emblem, so we'll see how things pan out.
@ShogunRok You mentioned watching Blade Runner 2049 for the first time the other day. What did you think about the music? Sound direction is going to be important for me in a game like this. Bring on those synthwaves!
Cyperbunk remind me of judge dredd more than blade runner word up son
A new bioshock will still the show for me.syphon filter remaster.and dragon dogma 2 word up son
I have been looking forward to this game from the first time I saw the trailer in 2013. I don't get overly hyped but I will be excited when I get my copy of the game.
I'm excited to learn more about this game strictly based on the hype surrounding it. I know this is blasphemous but the Witcher 3 bored me immensely after about 10 or so hours. I loved the Deus Ex games though and this appears to have a similar vibe so can't wait to see it.
I can tell just with the art that was released already that I won't like this game.
This is one of my most anticipated games! I know that the CG trailer wasn't even representative or potentially even going to include any aspect that makes it to the release but that's not important.
We all know what CD Projekt can achieve and their ethics are towards gamers - both of which culminated in making the Witcher 3 (probably) the best game of this generation and certainly the most 'awarded' game of all time - overtaking the Last of Us - granted there are more 'awards' now with so many different sites, establishments etc to issue awards, but its still a remarkable achievement.
As a 360 owner, I got to play the Witcher 2 which was a 'great' game but the Witcher 3 is on another level. I also know that the setting of the Witcher 3 isn't going to appeal to everyone and the politics of the world can be a bit too heavy for 'gaming' but even a 'simple' Card game in the Witcher 3 became its own thing. Its not just the main game though that impressed, the DLC was incredible too - especially Blood and Wine which is bigger and more expansive than a lot of AAA main games. Simply stunning too with multiple endings as well. Side Quests are not the usual side quests either. Even if they have 'story', they too can have different outcomes - but also have some impact on the main story. A small side quest can have big repercussions in the main story arc. It feels a more 'dynamic' and organic world.
Its things like this that have many excited - let alone the setting and the background to the game (which if you didn't know is set 57 years after the Tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020 in a dystopian place called Night City, California. Obviously the setting is very different from the more 'historically' based Witcher series and will obviously have 'guns' and technology. Its worth researching the lore of the Cyberpunk games to get an understanding of where this game has its roots but its also worth remembering, it is set 57 years later - although the tabletop game creator is also consulting on the project.
They did announce the game would have Multi-player but thank-fully that was scrapped to focus more on Single-player - that should please MANY too...
I for 1 can't wait!!!
I would be shocked if it didn't. People still rave about the Witcher even today, and CDPR have a Naughty Dog esque reputation as a studio that always delivers. Not even allegations of the studio's workplace culture have slowed them down. And then the game itself has enough mystery about it.... Unless they show something really flat, this will dominate E3.
Unless it turns out everyone prefers samurai, anyway.
Sounds interesting. Will keep an eye on it for sure.
@Octane Thought the music was great, really atmospheric. Would definitely take the same kind of tone in Cyberpunk.
Can't wait to see what this is like, the setting alone interests me more than The Witcher's (which I ended up really liking anyway).
There are some plot details on Wikipedia.
@AFCC Yeah, I’d have to agree with you there. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing all the 4 major AAA’s that Sony are showing...but, oh boy, am I ever stoked to see all that there is to show for Death Stranding, closely followed by Ghost of Tsushima.
@jacobia Ghost is going to be a neat game, I feel it...but the mistery surrounding Death Stranding drives me mad! Is it a 3ps like mgs? Is it FPS like silent hill? Is it even a shooter game? Who knows? That's what makes me hyped
@AFCC 🤩🤩🤩 Amen! Like I said, stoked🤩🤩🤩
Reckon it’s gonna be good 👍👍
This game will be great, one of my most anticipated games and I'm a huge fan of cyberpunk settings.
But easily dominate is a strong term, there are many games that will be there, I would say games with more hype as well.
Games like The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man, Death Stranding and Red Dead Redemption 2 really have potential to be the best of the bunch.
So stop it, lolol.
Edit: Thanks for mentioning Blade Runner 2049, amazing movie.
I like the end of that promotional video -
“Coming: when it’s ready”
Brilliant.
I haven't played The Witcher 3 yet, it's sitting on my shelf waiting for a spare six months. But Cyberpunk 2077, along with Metroid Prime 4 are easily my most anticipated games for E3.
everyone just be ready, thats all you need to know
I've never played the Witcher series before, but have always been a Cyberpunk fan, definitely looking forward to playing this.
