Want to know how successful PlayStation is? Sony has sold over half-a-billion systems since the division started in 1994, which is a figure being commemorated by a new Limited Edition PlayStation 4 Pro set to launch later this month. The exact number accurate as of 22nd July is 525.3 million units, and it accounts for PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3, PS Vita, and PS4.
The PS4 specifically has sold 81.2 million units directly to consumers, which puts it close to its recent shipment report, confirming that there’s been no channel stuffing going on. The most impressive thing about all this is that the current-gen console still hasn’t permanently dropped below $299.99, meaning that there’s a lot of selling power left in the machine yet.

that really is a lot of sales
anyone know how many Nintendo's and XBOX's have sold over their life times, it would be interesting to see how they all stack up
They would easily hit a billion if they released a handheld next.
@FullbringIchigo according to Wikipedia (includes handhelds - numbers seem outdated):
Nintendo 699 million
Sony 474 million
Microsoft 118 million
Sega 76 million
Atari 32 million
When I first read this I thought we were talking about PS4 sales only lol I was like 'wtf that's insane'
They’re catching up to THAT company
Shows how much THAT company has fallen over the years amirite
@Zombie9ers yeah Nintendo’s handhelds really inflate Nintendo’s numbers
@FullbringIchigo One is like nearing 800M
Other prob nearing 200M.
@dark_knightmare2 just looking at home consoles:
Sony 422 million
Nintendo 296 million
Microsoft 138 million
That's a lot of humans who have played their Stations.
I've contributed 4 to that number lol!! One home console from each generation, though I never really played my ps3 much. Crazy numbers though.
PlayStation Nation.
My family and I have Contributed 4. We still have an old PS One, and my brother and I both have a PS3 slim. I also have a PS4 Pro.
And the award for most overused picture goes to...
Never had a PS2 but I bought 2 PS3s and still considering a Pro upgrade.
@Rudy_Manchego I sincerely hope the people who liked your comment don't believe it.
Man that picture never get old
@Zombie9ers yeah Nintendo handhelds always did business compared to the consoles. It’s eveb more impressive since that’s only 4 consoles for Sony compared to the 7 for Nintendo
@ShogunRok Well it's clearly not going to happen with THAT attitude
I technically account for 4 of these purchases. PS3 is the only one I couldn’t afford ‘new’ due to price.
Incredible achievement. Hope PS consoles stick around long enough for the 1 billion announcement 🎉!
Bought a PSone, a mini PSone years later, a PS2 Slim, two PS3s, a PS3 Slim, two PS4s, and a PS4 Pro. Also a PSP, a PSP Go, and a Vita.
So that's 12 PlayStations. What a shill.
I hate to think how many myself and my kids have owned. I know one of my sons had 4 or 5 PS1's and a similar number of PS2's too as well as at least 2 PS3's. One of my other Sons had a couple of PS3's and I myself have had 6 or 7 Playstations - I still have 2 PS3's and 2 PS4's. That's not including any 'portable' either - not that I think any have had one. I wouldn't be surprised if we account for over 25 of them let alone the number of controllers we have bought. A lot were bought by me as presents too although my eldest did end up buying a lot more himself after we got them his first.
@Zombie9ers that's a lot of consoles sold
My history with PlayStation:
1998: PlayStation 1
2003: PlayStation 2 (+ a used PlayStation 2 in 2012 to replace the original which was stolen)
No PlayStation 3 (due to financial constraints)
2015: PlayStation 4
Looking forward to the PlayStation 5 around 2022, as I never buy year-of-launch systems.
3 PS1s, 4 PS2s, a PS3, PS4, PSP.
A whopping 10 PlayStations.
What a Nintendo fanboy.
1 PS1, like 4 PS2s, 1 PSP, 1 PSVita, 3 PS3s, 1 PS4...
No Ps1, 1 Ps2, 2 Ps3s, 1 Ps4 and a PSP thats my PlayStation history.
@ShogunRok You are a hero, imho.
@FullbringIchigo Not sure about Xbox, but you can see official sales data for Nintendo consoles/handhelds here:

My PlayStation History
1 PS1
1 PS2 and 1 PS2 Slim (i dropped my OG PS2 down the stairs)
1 PS3 and 1 PS3 slim (i gave my OG PS3 to my brother and upgraded to a slim)
1 PS4
2 PSP's (i stood on my original one)
1 PS Vita
and my first PlayStation game was FINAL FANTASY VII
I love how most on here went through at least 2 PS3's. That heavy slab was a cook house. I'm on my 4th!
1 PSOne , 1 PS2 , 1 PS3 , 2 PS4's , 1 PS4 Pro , 2 PSP's and 2 PS Vita's . Proud to be a PlayStation gamer.
Owed em all! You can thank me later.
PlayStation has always been the best when it comes to home consoles and my primary console since PS1, Greatness Forever
My PlayStation history is
1 PS1
2 PS2s Laser went in both of them
1 PSP
4 PS3s, 1st froze while installing update, Sony's replacement lasted 6 months cos of BLOD. So they replaced it again and then I traded it in for the Slim.
1 PS Vita
1 PS4 that I traded for Pro.
And 1 PSVR
Mine would be 2 PS1, 2 PS2, 1 PS4, 1 PS4 Pro, 1 PS3
1 ps1, 1 ps2, 0ps3, 2 ps4 (1 pro)
Woot, and had them all. Only the PS1 I didn't buy day 1. And every one lasted me the entire generation.
PS1 > PS2 > PSP > PS3 > VITA > PS4
Congrats to Sony/PlayStation on selling over 525 million consoles !
@PS_Nation I see what you did there ;P.
Incredible numbers. Especially in the home market. The biggest failure is the PS3, which still was the second best selling console that gen at over 80 mil. Nintendo, MS, Sega and several others wish they had such horrendous failures. This is why Sony acts as ridiculously as it does sometimes though.
Bought one of the original PS2 models in 2003, upgraded to a slim not long after. Bought a 40GB PS3 that eventually stopped reading discs so upgraded to a 120GB Slim. 2 PSPs (an original model and then I think it was a '2000' model that was a little smaller), an original Vita, a launch day PS4.
