Juventus forward and global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is embroiled in a scandal, and it’s reached the point where some of his principal sponsors have been forced to come out and comment. Alongside sportswear giant Nike, publisher EA Sports has said that it’s “closely monitoring the situation” after rape allegations emerged against the footballer. Ronaldo is the face of the recently released FIFA 19, featuring on the cover of the game and in commercials.
The Portuguese striker has been accused of raping an American teacher in 2009. Writing on social media, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player denied the allegations, stating that his conscious will allow him “to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations”. His current club Juventus has spoken out in defence of the player, honouring his “great professionalism and dedication”. Of course, it’s got a £100 million investment to protect.
In response to the media frenzy, EA Sports issued the following statement: “We have seen the concerning report that details allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo. We are closely monitoring the situation, as we expect cover athletes and ambassadors to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with EA's values.”

Ok guys let's remember to keep the comment section friendly and civil let's keep it to topic which is EA keeping and eye on the situation. It's not about who's fault it is or who's to blame. If comments get out of hand they will be deleted and the poster will get a warning.
Thanks for understanding
Would EA actually change the cover of a already released game?
I don't know what to say, honestly. There are few details of this case, just hope it doesn't end being unfair.
@3Above It's possible but honestly with as short as a lifespan sport games have I doubt it. It's not like sport games get a GOTY edition
Dang, hopefully the truth will come out. It's shame so many people are just not good like that. Hopefully justice will occur, whether it his innocence or guilt.
EA could just put a woman on the box.
"we expect cover athletes and ambassadors to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with EA's values.”
I'm going to get banned if I comment on that line from EA

Our own employees however... LMAO. What a ridiculous statement coming from EA. And not because the sentiment is wrong, people should always try to be good to others, but this is a company that has employed some real lowlifes.
@LaNooch1978 definitely along those lines, I'm just not sure if I'd have put it so politely given my disdain for EA and it's business practices
so... everyone is guilty until proved innocent?
@mkonji Sadly, this is the case with #MeToo movement.
I also want to add, by no means do I think this is a little issue. I'm 35 now and as early as 4 I remember being a huge sports fan. As I got older, one thing that always struck me was how we view the male athletes in particular as larger than life and put them on some ridiculous pedestal, act like they can do no wrong and unfortunately when you have millions who just tell you how wonderful and perfect you are, and you have a ton of money, it sometimes goes to your head and makes you think you're above certain things. Sadly, human decency seems to be something some of these guys believe they are above. And as long as they are good at what they do, fans -male and female - tend to look the other way. If I were to ever harm another human being for a reason other than self defense I'd rightly be locked away. The same should apply to everybody regardless of status. Hopefully the truth comes out about this and it turns out that he didn't rape anybody. I believe in innocent until proven guilty but I also don't have much faith in humanity either. Seen and heard about too many people do too many scumbag things to others over the years.
@LaNooch1978
Yeah, sadly. What's really embarrassing to me is the way some supposed grown ups will fawn over these people. End of the day, money and otherworldly talent aside, they're still just other human beings, get a grip when you see/meet them.
A police report was filed by the lady in question and he did pay her to keep the allegations out of the press. Time will tell if there is any truth to them or not. But either way would you want his face promoting your brand while the allegations are out there?
EA must at least be seen to have morals.
I guess we wait and see what happens.
I lovethe fact that rape culture is finally starting to become actionable. But... why did it take so long, really?
@Totaldude911 I'm not aware of what rape culture is, I know what rape is.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi It's nothing that can be illustrated in pictures. It's the idea that we can hold on a pedestal people who do terrible things and we may never know, because the victims are too afraid to come out and say something, for fear that nothing will be done about it.
Whilst I do believe in innocent until proven guilty, the evidence and the level of detail presented in the Der Spiegel articles is compelling and really do paint quite a damning picture, so I would be very concerned if I were EA, or indeed Juve or any of Ronaldo's sponsors! If the game company in question wasn't EA then I would feel rather sorry for them at the mo as this is looking like a soon to be PR disaster...which for once isn't of their making! 😉
He won't be removed. They're still merely allegations.
I absolutely cannot stand the guy, and I know there's currently a major spotlight on the whole issue, but in my book it remains as the law says: Innocent until proven guilty.
Sadly, proving guilt beyond reasonable doubt would be particularly difficult in a case like this and that's assuming the judiciary system there puts the effort in. But people will draw their own conclusions I'm sure, that's just human nature.
But I wouldn't be surprised if a number of sponsors decide to look elsewhere now. Using someone who's just been accused of rape is clearly not a good look.
