Oh, Housemarque. This is the studio that made a name for itself by creating arcade classics like Super Stardust HD, Resogun, and Nex Machina before switching gears entirely. It's currently working on the multiplayer shooter Stormdivers, but in a new article from the developer's CEO, it sounds like it has bigger plans.
"Instead of shutting down we have made the jump to AAA development and are working on a new, unannounced IP," the article reads. "This is the biggest and most ambitious game that Housemarque has ever worked on."
Of course, it isn't made clear what this AAA title will be, but it's an encouraging sign that things are looking up for the Finnish studio. With its brilliant arcade games failing to sell, it's had to move into unknown territory, but some ambitious-sounding pitches to publishers has landed it a much bigger project than it's been able to before. Work on the game started last year.
Your guess is as good as ours what this game will look like. What do you think Housemarque has cooking? What do you want to see from the studio in the future? Declare your love for arcade in the comments below.

Looking forward to seeing what they're cooking up. With rumors that Microsoft is looking to buy up a studio with a strong association with PlayStation, it remains to be seen if the new game is gonna be multi-platform or exclusive to MS or Sony.
I really want playstation to buy them
As long as it's on PlayStation then cool.
I can't understand at the price nex machina drops to in sales why everyone on ps4 doesn't have a copy, its right up there for me as game of the generation. It looks stunning and the gameplay is so slick. Its perfect at what it wants to be
'Instead of shutting down we have made the jump to AAA development'
Not sure what to make of this.
Does that mean it's funded by Sony?
@gingerfrog Cos sadly these type of games are seen as lesser products by some because they don't have AAA production values. I remember Colin Moriatiy got a huge amount of stick for saying Resogun will be the best launch game for PS4 all because people couldn't get their head around the idea of this "defender clone" could be better then the new Assassin's creed and Battlefields.
Playstation exclusive? Xbox exclusive?They dont have money for own AAA game.
@Turismo4GT
Insider told that studio which collaborate with Sony a bit. Not strong relationship.
Of all the studios, Housemarque is up there for my choice of one Sony should aquire.
I loved Housemarque games. Played Resogun for hundreds of hours and was so so so disappointed that they left Playstation for Stormdivers which in my opinion will not be a big success because it is just another game in a market with lots of bigger games already in. They are too late to the party. So I am very happy to hear they are working on a new AAA project. And I am quite sure it will come to playstation (maybe not exclusively but that's not imporant). Maybe Sony helps them out because Sony must know how good Housemarque is.
@AdamNovice He was right. Resogun was a great launch title and I was VERY angry that a lot of reviews didn't even bother to have a look at this game, they just ignored it. Only after a while they realised how good it was. Same now with Astrobot for VR. It is a milestone in gaming history and it just doesn't get the media hype like the 500th first person shooter or open world rpg.
@gingerfrog nex has some faults though too. It's great at what it tries to be, but I would argue they should have gone the smash TV route with it being a game show rather than the generic Sci fi enemy look. Losing a life also powers you down and more often than not struggle more at that exact point. Also the power ups you get effect how you can play which adds luck elements to a skill game.
With that said It's amazing voxel popping action is still a must play, it's just not as good as Resogun for me - which is borderline perfect as a release game.
@gingerfrog I bought a copy full price. Never played it though. I enjoyed their previous games so much I thought it only right to support them.
@dd8900
Your so lucky wish I could have my first play through again. Its amazing arcade fun
This is very old news. It was announced in their newsletter months ago.
