Sony has released firmware update version 6.51 for PlayStation 4. Those hoping the system software update contains a bunch of new features will unfortunately be disappointed. As is the case with all the minor iterations of the PS4 firmware, 6.51 simply "improves system performance."
It's been a while since we were promised PSN name changes, a feature that's been in beta for months now. Many hoped that the last firmware update, 6.50, would be the one to bring the much requested option, but sadly not. Hopefully Sony can sort this out soon, but it could almost happen at any time.
Anyway, firmware update 6.51 is about 463MB, and is ready to download now. Are there any other features you're keen to see on PS4's system software? Sound off in the comments below.

Still thinking that the name change feature will launch with the ps5 tbh. Will also work on PS4 obviously.
I read on twitter that someone has hacked up to firmware 6.50, so maybe it's something to do with that?
Gimme those darn name changes.
I just want a faster more responsive ui. Not fussed for much else.
One thing i know, my Pre-order digital Sekiro PS4 theme now working.
was always corrupted data whenever tried to use it before updates.
maybe it fixed some other errors too.
Don't know what it did but it's turned my ps4 pro into an absolute snail. Has taken over 2 hours to install 2 small updates to D2 and GTS. Never takes this long to just copy/install updates.
All I ever need is more stability
What about any Bluetooth headphones compatibility, even if it is only for Sony models?
A+ article title. Didn't get my hopes up
I wonder if PSN name changes will come with PS5. As a software developer myself I have absolutely no excuse for them. That was just HORRIBLE programming. If you create a database you would never ever use the actual username as a reference for anything. You would always work with an alias like a big number or whatever. You learn this kind of thinking in the first month of software developing or even by using your brain.
@Sanctanox Calm down, those were different times and they are trying to fix that mess.
@Sevenifity yep, 6.50 broke some themes for me too and now they are all working again
@RawnDawn I am absolutely calm. And personally I wouldn't even change my username. But: Computers and software development were not invented 10 years ago. Sony should have not made such a mistake even 30 years ago. It is just embarrising.
...I literally updated to 6.5 on Monday in preparation for a stream.
Great, next time I want to watch a movie I'll have to wait for another update. I know I could just stay offline, but that bugs me.
@jdv95
PS4 is still a couple years away, basically.
@redd214
if download speed is the issue use a proxy server to block Japanese IP addresses but turn off Proxy before you play a game online. They frown of using proxy while online gaming.
For the love of god just give me a name change
@gingerfrog Yeah, I've noticed the menus have started getting quite sluggish recently – especially if, God forbid, it's trying to download something while you simultaneously move around the menus.
@StationHead_G4 it wasn't downloading the updates that was the issue. It was installing them once downloaded that took forever which never happened before. Thanks though
Hopefully it'll stop my screen flashing black ever do often
@redd214
I had this exact problem, but it was only occurring randomly. I'd download a 10GB patch in 7 or 8 mins the it would take an hour to install. It was really random when it happened and not happened in last month for me
@gingerfrog yeah was very frustrating, wanted to get a mission or 2 done in D2 before work lol. Download to a couple minutes but install/copy took hours
I want sortable options on trophies. Sort by PS3, PS4, Vita...sort alphabetically by game name...sort by percentage of trophies completed...sort by games with platinum trophies vs. non-plat-able games.
Changing gears, I want to be able to put the same game into multiple folders. I have my favorites in a “Jim’s favorites” folder, but I also want those games to show up in alphabetical folders I’ve created.
I want to be able to pin my game folders so that they don’t move around. I have alphabetical game folders created, and I don’t want the “KLM” folder to display before my “ABC” folder because I most recently played, say, Life is Strange—that’s just plain dumb.
I want to be able to choose which app icons appear in what order on the TV & Video screen. And, I want Sony to either keep the YouTube icon white or red...don’t switch it up “every now and again.”
I want to be able to choose the background music that goes along with the wallpaper image I’ve chosen...and I should be able to upload whatever background tune I want to use.
On my friend list, I want to be able to pin certain friends so that they stay at the top of the list.
And there’s probably other stuff I want to do, too, dammit!
I’d also like to see a robust screenshot feature that gives the cool lighting options, angles, and such (like on The Order 1886...or Steep...or God of War...or The Show) that works with all games. With Sony owning this standard tool, the game development companies could save development time by not investing time/energy/money into creating game-specific screenshot tools, and the user would benefit by having just have one standard, robust image saver/manipulator tool to learn how to use.
@Sanctanox Steam has this problem too. The username is the primary key. Although you can set your display name different from your username.
Can we have 1 that makes my Pro make less fan noise lol? How about a snappier UI, takes long time to move to what’s new section. I think connecting to internet or game streams or something.
@RedMan33 - I have this on a PS4 Pro, but assumed it was because the System was running through the VR Box, as I do not
recall it happening when VR Box By-passed …? - I got fed up with Plugging / Unplugging HDMI Leads and without a suitable 4K UHD Splitter I accepted a toned down display for the VR to be ready as and when required -
@Templedoom it hasn't fixed happened again earlier, I don't know what I can do it's all hooked up fine pretty frustrating tbh
@markkoo Hi. I use my bluetooth headphones but not wirelessly. You have to plug them into the controller like anything else and go to settings, devices, audio or bluetooth (one of those I believe), and enable.
The next PlayStation console would benefit greatly from this feature!!
You know the thing that I miss most is a feature they had on the very first X-Box, and that feature was being able to put a music CD in the X-Box tray and then save that music CD to your hard drive. Of course you could play your saved music CD at any time and right in the middle of any games you were playing. I really missed that feature on every console after the X-Box because it vanished after that system. Even the X-Box 360 completely skipped that feature, and since all music streaming services are Crap and not worth a dime a month, I think any PlayStation console would really benefit from this option!!
