As detailed in a new article from Wired, PlayStation 5, as it's now officially known, will feature support for 4K Blu-Ray discs. This is a step up from PS4 and PS4 Pro, and will allow playback of 4K content.
The insightful article tells us that "physical games for the PS5 will use 100GB optical disks, inserted into an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Bluray player". In other words, standard PS5 discs are going to be pretty beefy, and the next-gen machine will have the drive to support them. Plus, you can watch your 4K movie collection right on your PS5, which is handy.

i'm just waiting for that stealthy price reveal in a future article.
it's almost bound to happen with the way they give wired these pieces of info.
Finally, I was hoping for this since I have a 4K TV and really nothing much to play on it.
next year is gonna see a big increase in 4k tv sales
xbox one s/x already has it..wow sony really catching up technology wise with the PS5 LOL
Finally confirmation that I can start buying 4K Blu-ray films.
i'm assuming it's mostly for the capacity reasons. although only RDR2 and TLoU2 have needed two blu-ray discs so far, i'd expect AAA games to be regularly more than 50Gb on PS5. wonder what sales for 4k discs are like in the rest of the world, because it's rather insignificant in the UK.
Best bit of news so far. Get saving £100 a month, folks - this is gonna be one hefty price tag!
Glad I future proofed myself by buying a top of the line TV last year.
hopefully PS5 cost 499.99. not 599.99
I saw a picture of HZD with a title starting with "PS5" and thought a PS5 sequel was officially announced. Then I read the rest of the title and now I'm sad
Cool i can dig that.its a great news.ps5 games will also benefits from. It.word up son
Hmmm, I guess this also confirms, in a way, that the 8K output that they were talking about earlier will be 8K upscaling and not 8K native content. 100GB discs wouldn't be nearly enough for that.
Also, how sly of Sony to put this out after last week's somewhat concerning news that Shawn Layden is leaving the company...
By confirming the true name of the next console over a year out from release makes it 'feel' more real than Project Scarlett in my eyes, but to each his or her own. I expect Microsoft will be putting out some news of their own any day now in order to get some of the spotlight.
If they sell 100m PS5 (nice to finally be able to actually call it that) like PS4 that might actually help 4k disc sales, b/c it's a very small section right now.
Is kind of weird there are 3 disc sections now for movies - DVD, blu-ray, 4k. I can recall VHS and DVD being out at the same time but 3 movie formats, all on disc, seems a bit overkill. Maybe DVD or blu-ray will go away leaving only 2 again?
@jdv95 this is a nice bonus, now I don't have any reason to get a xbox one now lol
This comment is written in 4K.
Great news, it's why I never bought a pro.
I don't buy blueray anymore since netflix available in my country.
@jdv95 Sony will likely wait and announce the price at the proper PS5 reveal.
They have a fair few months to do that, personally I'd pay £499 for this system, if not a bit more if the tech warrants it at launch.
The control tech and RT hardware, along with having a 3rd gen Zen CPU, will make for a great console.
Sony's devs are going to make this thing sing for gamers.
Props for the sub heading! Made me lol!!
@manu0 I know right, my xbox one x has been great to watch 4k movies, shame it rarely is used to play games though lol
One more reason for me to consider buying a 4K TV now !
@Turismo4GT 8K resolution has nothing to do with game size. It's just a rendering setting. Greater texture resolution would increase game size, but for the small audience this might be usefull I don't expect the effort.
Wait...PS4 Pro can't even read 4K movies? Why the hell are people selling them already, then?
... it's good to hear.. they just need to ensure Atmos support, etc. etc. - all the basic stuff the XB1X/S launched a year or so ago... they really do need to hit the ground running with this... Game Pass on XB is easily the best subscription service going (it's stunning value)... and with all current cross-console games playing better on XB1X - it's going to be a tough sell.. There simply won't be enough content I don't think to justify getting before Xmas 2020, and to be honest, I may even wait until PSVR 2.0 is announced / released (and that'll be a few years into it I think)... People who have Pro / XB1X like myself - I just can't see there being enough tech / software to fork up £400/£500 for a couple of games on release... :/ Forget the hardware, it'll be the exclusive games that sell PS5 - and they'll need some huge bangers to warrant purchase...
Physical media is dieing can not see me using the drive.
