Ever wondered what DOOM would be like if it was a rhythm game? Metal: Hellsinger is basically that. Coming to PlayStation 5 and PS4 next year, this interesting title has you slaying demons along to the beat of heavy metal music.
In this new video, we're introduced to James Dorton, lead singer of death metal group Black Crown Initiate. He provides the vocals for the songs in the game, and it sure sounds like death metal to us. We also get to see how the game itself plays out; the music plays, and you shoot and hack your way through various flavours of hellspawn in time to the beat, racking up points for good timing.

I do love a good rhythm game. Haven't really been interested in demon slaying games before now, but this could well change that.
Cool video! I could see playing this being a zen-like experience.
Looks completely amazing! I believe the music adds layers/tracks as you keep your combo up. Can't wait for reviews and hope there is a demo.
I suppose you don’t get much more metal than arpeggioing a demon’s limbs off. Hopefully they take the idea as far as it can go as there is potential here.
As someone who doesn't like death metal but loves games like Killing Floor, this looks very fun.
I hope it comes to VR, since otherwise it seems like a wasted opportunity.
Black Crown Initiate is pretty sick
I'm confused, none of the action seemed to be to the beat. I'm well up for this, but I need to see proper gameplay in time with the in game audio, not an overlaid metal track
@Dislecksier Didn't pay attention the whole trailer but from what I saw majority of shots were to the snare beats.
Well, seems easy in 4/4 timing. Hard mode Periphery and Animals as Leaders please, 11/8 for me! Or perhaps something with polyrhythms where we can shoot on either timing.
@Voltan Yeah, solid band. Well done responsible developer person! 🤘
@Jayofmaya There’s no such thing as polyrhythms.
Looks interesting, I'll try it after I finish doom eternal (just bought it at $20 on psn discount).
@TG16_IS_BAE ?
On topic: if this sounds up your alley, I saw a Skill Up video recommending Bullets Per Minute, which is basically the same concept (DOOM X Necrodancer).
@clvr Hey clvr! Yeah, that seems like something I might want to look into, I LOVE rhythm games. My only regret in life is selling off my Beatmania IIDX collection and DJ Dao controller. Good times, but it needed to move on.
@TG16_IS_BAE You what, mate? Lol
@TG16_IS_BAE https://youtu.be/XT9IF4CMQDI Here, I found this particular video to be humourous. You could argue that all polyrhythms can be written down in a long piece of sheet music in 4/4 but it would be messy and to deny that they are a thing is a little strange.
@TG16_IS_BAE awesome, I'm glad I was useful!
Though my question mark was related to your polyrhythm remark ahahahahh
Was that a joke?
My Doom Eternal's Meathook as ringtone says "Whole life I was waiting for this!" 😈
One problem of that trailer is, there is just one part he shoots on every ONE (part with two pistols), rest he shoots on TWOs or FOURs. But music is pretty clear to recognize beats. I just little worry about population of daemons in game. It looks quite barren. Hope there is some Horde mode to enjoy slaughtering in flow of music. ☺️.... at least as playing Guitar Hero on Hard.
@clvr Yes, it's a joke. I've been a musician for 30+ years, and nobody really seriously uses the term except casually, partly because any "polyrhthm" can just be recreated with similar note patterns other than the typical "2 over 3," as a simple example.
@Jayofmaya I was joking, I've been a musician my whole life and no serious professional uses that term, simply because it's just a casual way of explaining the musical feel. Obviously, it's easier to write them out over a few parts, but it's just a semantic thing, really.
@TG16_IS_BAE ah I see, thanks for the explanation!
What instruments do you play? And what kind of music do you enjoy the most? 😃
I'm very passionate about music and also play a couple instruments (not really that well though ahahah), but unfortunately I've never received any musical education, aside from a period of studying singing privately with a classically trained singer.
I've studied some theory in my free time over the course of the years, but I wouldn't absolutely regard myself as an expert on theory and such 😅
@TG16_IS_BAE I suppose so, I find it easier to think of the beats that way still so it works for me and also explaining to non-musicians I get you, though. Adam Neely (really good youtuber) helped me understand them a little more than the mathematical way I would write and play them before, but it's still hard to go directly on feel when doing more difficult measures. Cool man, I only started guitar about 12 years ago, but been taking it a bit more seriously over the last couple years so can play a lot of the harder stuff now! I see @clvr (hey dude!) has already asked what you play!
@clvr How is the music going? I still have yet to do vocals on that song I recorded. Got another in the works right now which I think may be a little more enjoyable to you.
@Jayofmaya hey mate, always a pleasure seeing you around 😃
Well, if you don't mind, I'll gladly listen to any and all songs you have in store, link away! 😄
It's unfortunate there's no DM'ing here, otherwise I'd give you my email account or something.
By the way I've decided to dedicate some of my spare time going forward trying to learn how to mix and master stuff, since I've always relied on others for that and I'd like to be able to manage my projects more independently, which means we could very well exchange recordings, and I could even contribute some vocals if need be 😄
@clvr Yeah man, how have you been? Second lockdown here so not much happening. Haha
Not sure if I sent you the other song after recording so here it is: https://m.soundcloud.com/user-578082450/achromatic-minds-instrumental-version
I just uploaded to a new account since I'm planning on doing a lot more this year coming. Old upload had 57 plays anyway xD
This is the new song I'm getting upto speed so still midi:

The acoustic guitar sound represents the clean singing and the first 8 bars will probably be clean guitar, too!
That would be great! How far along are you? I found it very confusing with that first track haha It was new for me, too. Still haven't got a decent enough microphone hence the lack of vocals haha
@Jayofmaya thanks a lot mate!
Looking forward to listening, this weekend I'll make sure to check everything out!
I copied your contact, so if you feel more comfortable editing it out, by all means go ahead!
To be fair I'm only just at the beginning and I'm quite confused lol
Though luckily I already have a couple decent mics and also have access to some other material belonging to people close to me, so at least I don't have to spend unholy amounts of money right away and postpone some purchases to when I have more expertise in the field.
I'll make sure to check out your stuff tomorrow or the day after and I'll let you know! Have a good one 😄
@Jayofmaya Yeah! And sorry for the bad joke lol
@clvr I have played numerous instruments while growing up, including vocals, but I landed on saxophone and stuck with it. I transitioned from jazz to classical, which I like much better. Oh, and playing game arrangements of my favorites : )
My favorite music is of course, game music, hahaha. But I REALLY like J-Pop, J-Rock, and death/black metal. Odd mix, to be sure, but that’s me! Lol how about you?
@TG16_IS_BAE that's great, I like eclectic people 😄
Also I really like the saxophone, might hit you up for a future collaboration 😉
I've grown up listening mainly to pop punk and the likes, and then I grew more into prog rock, experimental rock, math rock jazz fusion, post-punk, post-hardcore, punk hardcore and some other heavier things, but unfortunately I've never been able to get into metal 😅
I like me some really heavy post-hardcore (something like Do It Again by Secret Band, for example), but for some reason I haven't found any of the myriad types of metal to do it for me ☹️
Don't worry though, I get the feeling you and Jay will go along very well seeing your tastes 😄
In any case, I've also tried to broaden my taste as much as possible; for example, lately I've been trying to get into hip hop and so I started listening to Aesop Rock, since I found his lyrics to be several cuts above anything else I've encountered yet. I like him but I wouldn't consider myself a fan as of now, but maybe it'll change 😃
Edit: on the topic of Japanese music, I don't really like J-pop and J-rock, but I've found a treasure trove of jazz and funk artists over there! Some really amazing music!
I’m all for more rhythm games and death metal is a welcome change of genres!
Hope it is mechanically sound and fun!
I want a Babymetal rhythm game. Just saying.
@clvr I bet! Thanks for the offer for a collab, I'm working on other things right now so I won't be able to join in!
@TG16_IS_BAE Ah I see, no worries!
Seems pretty interesting. I'm just a bit concerned about the variety. I hope the final product have more styles. Some symphonic, melodic and industrial would mix well.
@clvr Oh yeah, starting up is so expensive. I got the middle Ableton package and that alone was like £350!!!
Then there is all the guitar plug ins adding another 100 or so.
Awesome dude, the new one still quite metally but some riffs are a bit more melodic hardcore kinda stuff!
@Arnna Did you check out "Brand New Day" by them? One of my favourite guitarists featured in that track of Babymetals.
@TG16_IS_BAE No worries, I didn't get it at first but now I do haha
As for same genres, what death metal do you like?
@Jayofmaya Mainly death and black melodic, stuff along the lines of Dimmu Borgir, Amon Amarth, though Dimmu doesn’t sound that good in their newer albums.
@TG16_IS_BAE Ahhh, cool dude. I occasionally jam some Amon Amarth but usually I like tech death like Beyond Creation and Archspire.
@Jayofmaya Oh neat, I’ll check those out, never heard of them. Edit: just gave Beyond a listen, they sound like a cross between Amon Amarth and Black Dhalia Murder. Interesting!
Ever listen to Opeth?
@TG16_IS_BAE I was gonna mention Black Dahlia in the last comment actually! Haven't listened to their newer albums really, yet.
Dunno if you managed to check my song but the first has a tech death riff after the guitar intro. Mostly, it's more prog metalcore, though.
I do indeed! Since the Ghost Reveries album. Seen them live a couple of times, too. What's your favourite of theirs?
@Jayofmaya Ghost Reveries, easily.
@Jayofmaya dude Achromatic Minds is sick! Definitely very metal for my taste, but I like it nonetheless!
I got some vocal melodies (clean and unclean) in my head that I think would work well, I might record them and send them to you in the next few days if you'd like!
Just know that my timbre is way more post-hardcore high than death metal gravelly so maybe that's not to your liking lol 😄
Edit: Silent Vale is also interesting, I'd like to hear a full instrumental version if you happen to rerecord it one day 😁
@clvr Thanks dude! I wrote some melodies out for the chorus (they are fairly high notes, too) and intro but nothing else really! I'd love to hear what you could come up with
Yes, of course and maybe if you have a particular style in mind, then I can write a song with your vocals in mind? Don't know if I can write quite as well as the bands you will mention but I can sure give it a go. Trying to expand my range across all metal and core styles, so that's why the 2 songs are a little different in style, too.
