Presenting unpolished pre-alpha footage of a game already under intense scrutiny like Saints Row probably isn’t the best idea, but here it is anyway. As part of its cover story coverage, Deep Silver has provided Game Informer with a couple of minutes of open world footage from the upcoming open worlder – presented without commentary, background music, or even context.
To be fair, even though this is early, unfinished code, the scale is definitely impressive and the open world appears to be a lot more active than in previous instalments. We also like the way the driving physics look: the proof is always in the pudding for these kinds of things, but the handling appears pretty darn arcade to us, which is always a good thing.
How are you feeling about the new Saints Row now you’ve had a few months to digest its debut? What do you make of this footage? Avoid oncoming traffic in the comments section below.

Game looks good, characters still look like crap and especially the main character that Volition made.
@Nepp67 Yes, because Johnny Gat is clearly a masterwork of character design.
Now I’m gonna have to go changed my jorts 😻 👍🏻
The game is 800 or so pesos for the gold edition or what ever it's called with the season pass, which equals to 40 or so dollars so I might just buy it.
It's mad seeing the exact same character animations from the old games in a game that looks way more graphically advanced. Reusing old animations isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it just looks weird, like nothing's changed except the skin.
The settings are interesting for a gangsters Saints Row game, too bad the protagonists are teenage ticktockers who seem they can only take down the villains by exposing offensive tweets from 2007
It doesn’t even look very good but at least it’s bringing out the absolute melons on this site.
Granted its alpha and "should " look better but damn it looks really rough. Honestly it just doesn't look like SR to me, like if someone showed me that footage without telling me the game i wouldn't be able guess. The world also looks rather bland but hopefully come the final release it will have some depth and look better.
Lol yeh I won’t be buying this 😂😂
Love the bridge, can’t wait for the joke behind it. Nice hidden ramps.
I think this looks pretty good, but I've never been much of a Saints Row fan. Saints Row 4 is the only one I liked, and that's mainly because it's the closest this to Prototype 3 that we're ever going to get.
This Saints Row game is still on my buy list. But I have not yet seen a reason not to wait on a $ 20 sale price. I do hope they can convince me to make it a day one buy before launch.
@nessisonett He also sucks but damn these hipsters make me cringe.
This releases in 4ish months? When did the footage get taken? How long was this in active development?
Re-reading the PS Blog about this it seems this will be more of the same with a new coat of paint over already 4 layers of old paint. I love the original series but I don't think this one is gonna be for me just like the Mafia Remake. I'll be constantly reminded of all the things the old game(s) did better while playing the new one
@nessisonett Oh he is and a far better design than whatever they were thinking with these characters
I am surprised they are releasing pre-alpha footage taking into account the bad reception to the first trailer. In any other situation releasing this kind of footage would be cool but, after that trailer, if you are going to show something, it should blow everyone away. This is very far from doing that.
That actually looks quite good. I understand all the frustration at making the characters seem more real to life for their age group (I.e. pri*ks), but as long as I get a character creator as good as before, and the atmosphere and jokes are in a similar vein, it doesn’t really bother me too much how they look, their mannerisms etc.
Still on the fence with this one. I don’t hate it, but it ain’t really clicking with me either.
Looks like Open World: The Game. Nothing new to see here so far.
Looks like someone took a game from 2006 and gave it a graphical overhaul.
I think the story is the best & say's it all. Creating a criminal gang to pay off student loans 😂
I honestly was expecting it to look way worse!
Not bad considering its pre-alpha.. imagine the character animations will be improved (at least assume so), as this looks more about documenting the world map at the moment..
Still a wait and see for me... so long as all the superhero flying nonsense is taken out, i'll be interested, but certainly keeping an eye on this as it trundles along thru its dev stages
As long as they still have the sex appeal slider, I'll be happy!
Agree with others here.. the world looks fine, the characters are terrible. Even the stretching was annoying. Who stretches like that in skinny jeans and a tight leather jacket? Annoying hipsters, that’s who 🤣
Just me who thinks this looks terrible?
I didn’t think my hype levels could sink anymore but here we are
Honestly I'm pretty bored with open world GTA-likes altogether.
I recently tried both Watch Dogs games (courtesy of EGS freebies) and after a few missions and driving around a bit in the admittedly nice environment, I just felt like doing something more fun... like the dishes.
Hard to tell from previous alpha footage. Background music can make or break a game for me so it's still a wait and see
I'm glad we're not in a 'concrete jungle' anymore as someone else has pointed out lol.
It looks nice though, love that you can still teleport into the car.
@Nepp67 You can edit the main character
Still way too early to tell if it's going to be good or not. The trailer was definitely a good indicator of the tone, which sucks, brand this pre alpha footage isn't really a good indicator of anything... So much can change between now and when this goes live so I don't know what I'm supposed to make of it.
I guess it looks alright graphically.
@Darylb88 I know but still if you put a face on your franchise atleast make it interesting. Look at Farcry 6 the blandest series around they atleast make you say cool character.
@AlmostRaw There was already a leak featuring way more footage than this so I guess they had to give something when they took the leak down.
@thefourfoldroot So you honestly see someone with a trendy ish hair cut and clothes and auto assume they're "pr*cks"?
@Jayofmaya
Of course not in the real world no. Real people are far more multifaceted than video game or film characters. But these are not real people. Such things in visual media are codifiers, used as a shorthand to characterise fictional individuals or groups. Their image and vernacular here, but mostly in the trailer, is meant to represent a certain generation and attitude, and this makes it fair to characterise them as pr*cks in my view.
@thefourfoldroot You do make a valid point that a lot of games do usually use extremes and generic characteristics almost to the point of satire sometimes. I suppose if they have big casts and other high production costs we will usually lose out on deep and realistic characters. I think Saints Row has usually sold itself on stereo types, though.
@Jayofmaya
Indeed it has. So I’ll just judge these likely one dimension characters by their surface representations without much hope of being proven wrong but, as I said, that’s no big deal for me as long as I can fashion and play my character as I wish.
@Jayofmaya That makes a bit more sense. Thanks for the clarification
@nessisonett at least Johnny gat doesn't look like a tiktoker.
@thefourfoldroot Yeah, gonna be difficult for that to work in SR. Looks are easy. I think before that they had different V/As and that somewhat changed their tone and how aggressive they sounded but there wasn't much choice on how you resolved things. I remember you can blow up a building or use it for your gang and things like that.
