An investor presentation has prematurely revealed that the developer of DC Universe Online is working on a Marvel MMO. Dimensional Ink Studios, which is the Texas-based division of the Daybreak Game Company, is heading up the project, with ex-Cryptic Studios co-founder Jack Emmert leading the charge.
Unfortunately, that’s all we know right now. Daybreak Game Company had worked on a Marvel MMO before, but it was cancelled in 2018. This new project is listed as “longer-term”, so is presumably some ways away. Meanwhile, work still continues on DC Universe Online, which will receive its “largest expansion content to date” by 2023.

Poor Marvel Heroes has been forgotten then!
@nessisonett came here to post the exact same thing. Please let me cast a tsunami of squirrels in this game too.
I myself am not interested in ANY MMO's regardless of whether its Marvel based or not so I couldn't care less about this. Games like this are also very dependant on their community of players and 'whales' to support it.
As much as I like the Marvel characters, I am also beginning to tire of the almost constant stream of media releases. Marvel movies, TV shows, games etc.
The Marvel (and DC) characters though do offer a LOT of potential for virtually all game genres and game-play styles so I can understand why the franchise is a good fit for games and the 'Licence' gives devs a LOT of source material too. For consumer, its a recognised name so will get peoples attention and interest.
Its great that there are so many different styles of games to play so whilst I may not be interested in MMO's or Turn Based Combat for example so this and Marvel's Midnight Suns may not be on my 'must have' list, there are others who will.
@BAMozzy Play a subscription based MMO then. Final Fantasy XIV doesn’t need to cater to whales and it’s all the better for it. There’s a reason it’s consistently ranked among the best entries in that entire series.
@nessisonett I have NO interest in MMO's in general and would NEVER pay a 'subscription' to a single game - its either 'FREE' and the SAME experience for all or I buy the game and expect the SAME experience for all. I have never liked Final Fantasy games either but I know there are other MMO's (ESO for example).
What I mean by same experience, is that everyone earns XP at the same rate, everyone has the same chance for loot, same choices for weapons, gear etc, same access to everything. I don't have an issue with Free to Play having purely cosmetic items that have no game affecting issues but as soon as you get bonus double XP events, weapons (even if they have the same profile as another in-game weapon) etc behind some 'paywall' - whether its a one-off or subscription based, then it affects the experience.
The whole Subscription model doesn't work for me at all. I'd prefer a one-off up front charge and if they add DLC, I have a choice to buy or not. Even at £5 a month, a year later you've already paid full price for it and if you don't keep paying, you lose access. The only reason Game Pass works for me is the fact that its constantly offering a vast choice of different games and over the course of a year, I get to enjoy a significantly 'higher value' of games than I spend out on Subscriptions. Just in the last couple of months with Marvels Avengers, Forza Horizon 5, Back 4 Blood etc have saved me 'more' than I paid out over the year.
As I said at the end, its great that these types of games exist for those that enjoy them - they are however of no interest to me - regardless of the setting, the characters, the actual game-play loop etc.
As I said, each to their own! If MMO's appeal, there are options and looks like Marvel will give you another option in the future but it won't be on my wanted list - regardless of whether its F2P, Subscription based or a one-off payment...
Feels like we're entering the future timeline when all pop culture - tv, games, movies - is superheroes. And I'm saying that as somebody who likes superheroes, but also new ideas and variety.
And if somebody could make a movie without the Rock in it that would be great, thanks. 😆
I tried DC Online but quickly fell off mostly just because MMOs just aren't my style. It seemed pretty good though from what I played though so I could see this turning out pretty good too.
I just want another marvel ultimate alliance or xmen legends, but with the graphics of marvel avengers or guardians of the galaxy.
It's been a very long minute without a new Marvel game being announced or leaked so just keep em coming guys 😶
@nessisonett got shut down years ago - it was ***** lol
I couldn't care less. The only thing I'm looking forward to is everything Insomniac Games is making (Spider-man 2 and Wolverine) not because it is Marvel but because they are fun games with a decent story.
Well third times a charm as they say.
I love DC Universe online. I've been playing that game on and off since the PS3 days. Is the only MMO game I ever liked and with the exception of Spiderman, I have always prefer DC over Marvel, but this sound interesting..
@nessisonett I wouldn't say that FFXIV doesn't specifically cater to whale. Most if not all of the big 4 seater mounts are only on mog station and those are $30+. Want that cute dote emote... mog station. Want any of the past event items that you missed... mog station. Want to change your character appearance beside basics... mog station.
Sure you can play ffxiv from start to finish without paying a penny, but if you plan on playing that game long term, and want to get really involved in the community as well. Prepare to spend some money eventually.
Why? why? why? ... No, seriously... why another multiplayer crap? just why? have they run out of imagination, to make some story, or are they just lazy as hell to create it? ...and dull people will still buy it, because there is "Marvel" sign on it...
I just want a new Capcom game with sprite art…. Which is never gonna happen 🥺
@djlard I feel that way about the Marvel films. Or anything Disney has a hand in. Cynical crap which doesn’t have to be halfway decent to make a billion dollars.
@rjejr there's a steady stream of great movies that don't feature The Rock. Not sure how that's a problem?
@PhhhCough i second this. Both were great games.
Oh. Great. More marvel......
It almost makes me miss everything-zombies from the past decade...
@BAMozzy I still like teso. Basically it's a normal retail game played online as an MMO. Nearly all the mtx are cosmetic, aside from two traveling shops that many a big qol difference, and the only reason to subscribe is if you're into crafting heavily. I'm not so it's all skippable. I could never get into other mmo though. Still waiting for pso2NG though.
@nessisonett Just read about that. The console version lasted 4 months before they killed it lol Lucky it was free to play, I suppose but a kicker for whoever put money in.
@lolwhatno OH DAMN. I had no idea that was what the story was, with the parts about the adventurers with powers that no one could remember the faces of and such. It sort of makes sense now.
@nessisonett @BAMozzy
Even better, FFXIV can pretty much be played as a single player game these days with the Trust system and NPCs to go through the dungeons with. I played the game heavily back in the day and loved the social aspect of it but now with Endwalker I’m pretty much just in it for the story. It isn’t going to make you love MMO combat if you’re not into that, though, and it definitely can get repetitive.
@Floki I noticed that when I was looking for the Carbuncle plush that gives you a free pet. One of the expensive ones was literally a whale so I screen shotted it and sent it to my mate with just the "whale" part visible lol
@Phostachio Unfortunately the trust system isn't available until Shadow Bringers, so you still have to go through ARR, HW, and SB using the duty finder... Unless you grind a character up to level 80, and max the gear. At that point, basically the entire game can more or less be solo minus the ARR raid dungeons.
I'm not really into mmo but I was in Marvel heroes soo maybe
Loving this Idea! I am WAY into MMO's and DC Universe is actually pretty good. I hope they take their time, and put out a good product.
@NEStalgia "It almost makes me miss everything-zombies from the past decade..."
Oh man forget about the decade of zombies. OK I take back what I said about the superheroes, bring on the superheroes. But no more superhero zombies, once was a enough.
@Kobeandodom I suppose it's not really a problem, more like when it rains for 10 straight days and you're just like - sure, the rain is great for the grass, but can I have a sunny day for a change.
@rjejr LOL, yeah.....at least superheroes come in a few varieties so it's a little better than the same green-gray shambling corpses. IDK how the Walking Dead phenomenon lasted so long. At least in Sony-land. I think having two zombie franchises from Sony at the same time, both hyped, plus the several third party games all at once just made it so oppressively everywhere.
@rjejr but there are plenty of great movies without the Rock. So you're choosing to stand in the rain when there's sunshine all around you.
@NEStalgia Zombie movies, tv shows and games were all too encompassing for me, my wife and I don't like horror, much less zombies. Still haven't played Days Gone, which I recently explained to my wife is "TLoU w/ motorcycles". Am I wrong? Still need to play, but buy first, TLoU2. May try to go scoop it up now w/ my points at Sony Rewards if somebody there can get my account to work again. Have you seen my overly whiny forum thread? 😝
@rjejr Same, I don't do horror, and do zombies even less, so 10 years of everything being zombie horror was just so much nothing. Technically Days is a better zombie game than TLoU since it apes a lot of the Left 4 Dead, or that Sega series with the unlimited hordes coming at you. I still don't like zombie games, but if I liked zombie games I'd probably like Days more than TLoU. TLoU is a better movie, if you like zombie movies though. TLoU2 spends more time murdering the living, gruesomely, than the dead, though. So maybe it counts more as a zombie creation game? MM should make TLoU3. That would free ND up to make remasters of Crash Remastered. For PC.
Oh, I've seen far worse forum threads than that....
@NEStalgia "Oh, I've seen far worse forum threads than that.... "
Yeah, that's why I stay out of the forums. 😂
@Jayslow @nessisonett I'll be honest, had completely forgotten about Marvel Heroes! Truly an underrated game that people often overlook.
