Forspoken, the Square Enix RPG from studio Luminous Productions, has been delayed.
The studio made the announcement on social media earlier today, confirming the release date has been changed. Initially planned for launch on 24th May, the game will now release on 11th October 2022 — a delay of nearly five months.
As stated in the above tweet, the studio says that "getting it right is extremely important to us", and will use the extra time to "focus all of our efforts on polishing the game". Luminous signs off by thanking its fans, saying it looks forward to "sharing more about Forspoken with you soon".
The game got a gameplay breakdown late last year, and it did look a little rough around the edges. Of course, delays are rarely a bad thing, but were you hoping to explore this intriguing world in May? Will you be picking this PlayStation 5 RPG up in October? Do some magic in the comments section below.

Not surprised by this at all. Its the right thing to do. Let's hope the finished game is sparkling, looking forward to this though, it looks fantastic
... To the surprise of nobody.
Quite a long time between GT and this, though.
Surely Sony has a surprise up their sleeve for the summer 👀
That footage that came out a while ago did look quite rough, so this sounds like a good idea.
Fair enough.
I'm looking forward to this one a lot, but I guess it will be a Christmas game instead of a summer game.
I might get Stranger of Paradise over the summer instead.
Ah this was rumoured. Makes sense. The recent gameplay trailer made the world look quite lonely. Hopefully this will be a much better game for the additional development time
It didn't look very polished or entertaining IMO, I'm hoping they also make some changes to the dialogue while they're at it.
Hopefully they can also use the time to get some marketing done too. Only concern is October is usually a busy month but with COD taking a year off it may have some room to breathe
One of my most anticipated releases of the year. Glad they are taking their time with it though.
The game just doesn't looks good, from the gameplay to graphics and story.
It really wasn't looking good to be honest. Hopefully when the devs show it off again it will be in better shape and able to get me hyped.
Great!
Well it seems Q2 of 2022 might be pretty weak if you don't own a switch.
Seems like the right choice. I'm pretty excited for this game, but the latest trailer looks pretty rough compared to earlier ones.
It didn’t look good in the slightest, very very rough so this is probably for the best!
Looked like an engine in search of a game. Not expecting much tbh, but longer in the tank gives better chance of a better final product
Was kinda expecting this after the last trailer. This delay can only be a good thing.
This means no GoW until 2023 as Sony won’t let it’s third party contract compete with first party. Especially because they value that Square partnership.
Release dates mean nothing nowadays.
This seems like the right decision. I think there could be a really good game coming here, but it needs more work from the glimpses we have seen, so I'm happy to see it delayed.
I was looking forward to this one but hopefully this means it comes out a better game - I guess I’ll play it when the world plays Starfield
@weR1youR2Podcast Bit of a leap in logic there.
Well looking at games like no man's sky, cyberpunk, halo infinite and babylon's fall I'd gladly take a delay over rushed rubbish
After that unpolished vertical slice of the game they showed off a few months ago I felt May 2022 was way too soon. Hopefully the game is in much better shape once it releases now.
Take your time. I really want this game to be good.
I get the feeling that the PS5 version isn't the only one getting delayed
Zero surprise there, moving on...
I'm relieved. I'm rooting for this game, but every time I see it, it looks like it needs more time, which is exactly what it's getting now.
Let's hope it is enough.
@weR1youR2Podcast I wouldn't be so sure - you could easily put GoW in November/December and there'd be plenty of breathing room. Saying that, Sony seem to have no issue with putting games like HZ:FW and GT7 weeks apart!
This game interests me. Its the first game I've seen that actually looks like its pushing for next gen graphics seeing as its for PS5 "only".
I’ve heard in the past week that Forspoken may get delayed and GoW may be closer to release than it appears.
Forspoken gets delayed today.
I'm thinking GoW may actually release at the beginning of June.
I have no sources, this is just conjecture.
I’m actually rather looking forward to this. Just my kind of story. Don’t care about the delay though, loads to play.
Not shocked, the open world looks pretty and big but that's the only thing that interests me though with it.
I bet Squeenix played Elden Ring and were like *****, we better put some substance in our open-world.
RIP GOW2 em 2022
There’s always Square’s Babylon’s Fall, right? Right?
Squenix delayed a game?🙄
GoW in May then?🤷
As others have said, it's probably for the best to make sure it is as good as it can be. I have higher hopes for this than most people, which makes the delay a bit disappointing, but hopefully it will end up being worth the wait.
The only potentially bad thing is this will likely end up coming out close to God of War Ragnarok. If this is a long open world game, then that will present problems. Otherwise the delay is ok with me as it gives me more time to play something else after Horizon Forbidden West, which I am taking my time with.
While the gameplay video shows promise, the game definitely needs more time to cook.
@weR1youR2Podcast, If Sony valued it's partnership with Square and it's customers, it would bring Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy to PS platforms.
Also, I can't believe how stupid Sony is for not contracting Atlus to bring SMT 5 to Playstation. Surely it would sell very well on PS, considering how bad it looks on the Switch.
Well, maybe I'll be able to find a PS5 by then....
@weR1youR2Podcast Sony wouldn't rearrange their entire release schedule simply because of third party mismanagement. This points more towards Square picking a date around what Sony has planned.
Game looks great and should cook for as long as necessary. The decima engine is amazing and I love the folks over at square enix.
Totally forgot about this game, and will continue to do so.
It looks great to me but it will still land in my backlog even if it launches in October. Too many games, too little time (and money).
Looking forward to this I don't mind the delay
I liked 'project athia' as a name far more.
@Danloaded COD isn't taking this year off. It next year.
@weR1youR2Podcast yeah Sony would never have big releases right after each other…..oh wait!
This is probably for the best. Looking forward to this game tho
Perhaps to add an option for less Spoken in Forspoken? 😉
The gameplay and graphics here do look pretty great, just can't stand that dialogue.
@weR1youR2Podcast if you believe they would delay their biggest game because of Forspoken or SE lol you're so wrong
that’s ok , i got a crush on the main character 😍 so i want the game to be the best it can be
CoD is still coming this year, @Danloaded. It's next year it's taking a year out...
Take your time devs! I was a little lukewarm on its original announcement but whenever it gets shown off again it piques my interest more and more.
Actually a chance that I’ll play this at/near launch now! Good choice, devs!
To be frank here, they should just delay the game until next year. This year already looking like a busy year with big name releases.
Gives the marketing/publisher team to advertise the game and get more on eyes on it. The last video they showed looked rough.
Definitely the right move, and likely partly a decision made based on early responses to gameplay.
This is how player base input should be received, rather than releasing to appease shareholders and dupe players into preorders(CDPR), or even worse hold a series of network tests to get community feedback, only to release the game in a worse state performance wise than those network tests (Elden Ring). These are the people who put food on your tables.
Just finish, and polish your damn games, and listen to feedback, especially when its feedback on game performance problems that have been raised for nearly 2 decades.
and nobody will miss it. s-e is on a "hot streak" with the likes of: left alive, avengers, babylon's fall and soon to be dumpster fire forspoken. when will this publisher wake up and realize that it is throwing money down the drain for no reason other than poor project management and a complete lack of business sense?
It’s right to delay something not finished but it may just find itself up against God of War
@JB_Whiting yeah after seeing the performance issues and receiving a 6.4 userscore
squarenix probably decided not to follow elden rings trails
Yeah the rumors was right. And the delay is not long.word up son
The only way I'm going to play this game is if there's an option for the main character to be Nonspoken.
@Ichiban I mean you could just turn down the dialogue volume all the way down 😅 but I get you, I can't stand the script that was written for her character from the small sample shown.
Think the devs are too busy playing Elden Ring to make their deadlines!
@AFCC you might be surprised
@JB_Whiting HZ:FW and GT7 as so different that the player overlap between the two is likely small enough that there is no worry about cannibalizing from one or the other franchise.
When I read about a delay, I don't read: "We want to make the game the best it can be." what I read is: "We are incompetent and have no idea what we are doing." Seriously just take what time you need and stop giving arbitrary dates that no one actually believes any-more. Make the game the best it can be by not shoving an arbitrary timeline in front of the team developing it.
Is that enough time to rewrite the script and re-record all the dialogue?
@Porco speak for yourself. Plenty of people are excited for it.
Great news! Hopefully the game will be a banger and not be forgotten amongst anything else releasing in October.
I was expecting a delay for this one - the latest footage looked 'meh'. Sensible move and extra time for polish...as long as it's not near the God of War release!
@thedevilsjester "When I read about a delay, I don't read: "We want to make the game the best it can be." what I read is: "We are incompetent and have no idea what we are doing.""
I do wonder what you do for a living to make such a statement.
Hopefully they're using the time to re-record all of the dialogue.
They specifically mention the "hero" in that release so hopefully they've just got rid of the actress and redone all the dialogue so it doesn't come off as completely tone deaf and fake. I wouldn't play this thing for charity but at least it would serve as a warning not to patronise your audience.
Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say but nonsense came out when she moved her lips, just a bunch of gibberish and gamers wanna go and forget about Frey.
@UK_ that would be unfortunate, Kratos would flex his cannon ball shoulders and crush this delicate flower in a brazen display of toxic masculinity. Then we truly would be forspokenless
@naruball I am a software engineer.
To be clear, the "we" I refer to in my statement is management (or publishers, etc...) not the engineers/designers themselves. The machine, not the cogs.
If you tell me it's going to take a month to do a project, and it takes two, thats understandable; if this is your first time. If you have years of experience to draw on, and an entire industry to look at, and you still tell me it's going to take a month; when it takes two you are either incompetent, or dishonest.
@thedevilsjester hello police, I'd like to report a murder.
@thedevilsjester sure, buddy. Thanks for sharing your infinite wisdom. I work in academia, so I can safely criticize all academics if they fail to meet my standards. Doesn't matter if it's an article, an edited volume, the proceedings of a conference, or a monograph. I understand everything about any project thanks to my omniscience from working in this field.
@naruball Your snarky reply aside; I am not coming at this from the perspective of an engineer-that-knows-all, nor have I indicated such or mentioned my field until you asked. I am coming at this from the perspective of common sense. This applies to any project, in any field, from anyone.
When game delays were a rare occurrence it was easy to give them the benefit of the doubt; but they have become so common (even before the pandemic) that they (major publishers and studios) no longer deserve that doubt. All I hear when I read delays anymore is that those in charge pushed an arbitrary deadline on the engineering team that they were not able to realistically hit; and they had to backpedal on that deadline.
To be clear, I am looking forward to this game and I want the developers to have as much time as they need to make the game they want. What I would prefer is for publishers to stop giving dates that they are not going to hit; and if that means we get vague timeframes until they are more confident, I am happy with that.
I was super stoked for this when it was announced as Project Athea. Everything released since had been kind of disappointing for me. Hopefully I'm wrong. I'd love for it to be amazing.
@naruball hmmm, call me surprised! after seeing the negative reception following the ign gameplay footage, i wouldn't have known! the critical response was so severe, that the video was removed — the writing is on the wall
@Porco I thought the game looked decent enough for a preview and the concept intrigues me; so I am certainly one of those people that are excited for it, as @naruball said. I don't remember hearing about all of this hate towards it though; at most a low rumble about its visuals that I didn't pay much attention to. Maybe I just don't travel in the same circles, but I am hopeful that it turns out to be an enjoyable title.
yeah, all of them Devs claim they "want to get it right", yet tkey keep hurling patches post-release like all other AAA titles which claimed they will "get it right" (looking at you, Horizon FW)
@weR1youR2Podcast nah. If they delay it, it won't be because of that game.
