We knew Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunting Grounds developer IllFonic was making Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed ever since the company’s CEO said so on a podcast. However, here’s the official confirmation – with a trailer to boot! It’s exactly what you’d expect it to be, by the way: an asymmetrical multiplayer campaign featuring four eponymous Ghostbusters against one, pesky Ghost. Bagsy the slime one!
The press release explains: “Put on a Proton Pack, grab a Ghost Trap, and monitor the trusty PKE Meter, as a Ghostbuster in a team of four brave souls pursuing ghastly ghosts terrorizing public locations. Work together to find the Ghost, blast them with streams from the Particle Thrower to tether the slimy foe in place, and shut the trap at the perfect moment. Keep citizens calm and corral the Ghost before the environment gets too haunted.”
It continues: “Play as a Ghost, scaring unsuspecting citizens at various locations. You ain’t afraid of no Ghostbuster, thanks to the ability to fly and teleport between rifts. Possess objects lying around each room to sneak by roaming Ghostbusters and frighten passers-by. If that doesn’t work, sliming and summoning ghoulish minions will. Haunt each map to completion as one of multiple Ghosts with different abilities.”
There are a lot of really neat touches here, like the fact you’ll prepare for your missions at the famous Firehouse, and will even be able to speak with Winston Zeddemore, voiced of course by Ernie Hudson. You’ll be able to play solo with AI if you really want to, but obviously an experience like this will be best enjoyed online, and there’ll be complete crossplay across all consoles and platforms, which is great to see.
The game’s due out this holiday, but will you be crossing streams with it? Suit up in the comments section below and let us know.

Me, “New Ghostbusters game?!”
Me after seeing that it’s multiplayer, “You’re already dead to me.”
I think we can all see what to expect here, previous has been pretty buggy and not overly well received. They manage to get a fair few licenses for games, so let's hope they can deliver on this one.
I think it looks like a lot of fun.
Are these asymmetrical online games just easier to develop or something? I mean, outside of your CODs and sports games aren't the best selling games usually single player? Do they really rake in that much more from MTX skins or whatever than straight sales? Or is it just a safer bet, based on resource cost?
These to me always look like extra multiplayer modes that should be in a more complete game. Ifyou've got enough friends who'll regularly play it then it'll probably be fun but this type of game isn't for me
If this was a 4 player PvE without the “play as the ghost!” stuff I’d be all in.
I enjoyed Friday the 13th and even logged a decent amount of time with Predator but this seems like a majorly missed opportunity.
I think I willed this into existence. A few weeks ago, some friends of mine were lamenting the lack of a good new Ghostbusters game. I mentioned it would be cool if there was a game like Evolve with 4 ghostbusters vs. 1 ghost.
I’m probably going to get this regardless, but I’d rather it be a single player Ghostbusters FPS with the option to play with friends than a Ghostbusters skinned Friday the 13th type of thing. I played maybe five hours of Friday the 13th. It was a fun novelty, but I don’t know people that stick with that type of game and I know I don’t either.
An Illfonic multiplayer? lol no.
I swear at this point it’s just copy and paste. Get the license for an 80s movie and funnel it into an asymmetrical multiplayer game. It’s worse than battle royale now.
With that artstyle, feel like it would be cool in PSVR/VR2! But ofc not gonna happen.
Did whomever handle the port of the ps3 Ghostbusters game ever update it to include the co-op mode?🤔
Given their handiwork on Friday the 13th with its Infamous bugs & Predator,just the name Illfonic generates more jump scares than this likely will!😋
Looks neat but the float kinda loses air since it's a multi-player only title.
I'll pass and stick with my remastered Ghostbuster game from the PS3.
@Odium Couldn't agree more.
Both mentioned games from that developer had potential to be great games but because developer never intended to expand on those games further than the basic features it always fell flat. I expect exactly same to happen to this game. In fact, it even sounds like they are using the same idea just with different game design on top. Hard pass
@Kairu kinda seems that way which is why I'm wondering why devs are churning these out left and right. like there's a renewed movie franchise to craft a story from and instead they use this license to make Left 4 Dead with ghosts.
I know left 4 dead is different but I'm grouping all these "buddy" games together.
A shame it's Multiplayer because I would have purchased it instantly otherwise. The sooner these Developers realise many older gamers like myself generally don't care about Multiplayer the better. I don't come from the Multiplayer generation so naturally such things are not going to interest me.
@Odium Agreed. This game does nothing for me.
@Odium took the words outta my mouth. From 😁 to😭 in an instant
@Odium "You’ll be able to play solo with AI if you really want to,"
So, it CAN be single player. If it's any good that way, that will be the way I play. One line salvaged my interest (and from what I see, the interest of a lot of people posting here).
@RobN Aliens Fireteam Elite can be played Solo but it doesn't really work that well (my opinion) so I can't see this being any better.
"IllFonic"
NO make a good game instead.
IllFonic? The cack-handed way that they handled Friday The 13th (it was never in a place where it was a smooth experience), makes me extremely hesitant about this.
Hard pass, a dreadful developer don't think any of thier games have scored higher than 60, all seem just a reskin of Friday the 13th
"an asymmetrical multiplayer campaign"
Ugh. Pass.
Columbia Pictures was mentioned at the start and end of the trailer. They are a Sony owned company.. so Sony chose to release this game on all platforms instead of making it a exclusive?? Or is the rights to Ghostbusters in games sold to another company and gender why this is a multiplatform game? An I the only one confused about this...
Looks fun to me, but the gaming community complains before a game even is out when its not single player. I hope it turns out fun.
Nope! Not to be overly negative but I would prefer a single-player only campaign with multiplayer elements. I have no interest in asymmetrical multiplayer games.
@Alan_cartridge_ @Ralizah @sonicmeerkat @code45709 @RubyCarbuncle @Ken_Kaniff @nessisonett @CVCubbington @Odium Agreed 100%! I lost interest with this game soon as I realized it was multiplayer only.
The best and only Ghostbusters game that matters is the 2008 game, which was thankfully remastered over to PS4 a few years ago.
@Cutmastavictory Not being interested in something is complaining is it? well that's a new one. If that's true then I guess that means you're sort of complaining about people complaining then 🤣
@RubyCarbuncle or, and let's use some logic, I'm only talking about some complaints I've seen...😱
@Cutmastavictory Ahh fair enough dude but the way you worded it it seemed like you were having a bit of a dig at everyone.
@Odium he slimed me 😜
@zupertramp Simply: Yes. In any multiplayer you DON'T need to write and script story. It is for developers, who don't care or are just dumb to make something. And in this one case IllFonic just swaps textures of some existing game. The rest is that famous poem " Ctrl-Cee, Ctrl-Vee, in one hour, it's complete"
The trailer gave me the impression it's at least partly based on Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis' original Ghostbusters 3 script. That featured a passing of the torch to a younger crew and also travel between Manhattan and "Manhelltan". I like that it appears to be set after the events of GB Afterlife as well.
Never heard of Ghost Corp before. They a new studio specifically for making the franchise games? If so poor ***** as this franchise is on a tight leash when it comes to creativity. The last time I enjoyed this was extreme ghost busters, hopefully they can bring that back best creature designs and stories of the franchise.
Another waste of a great license much like the new evil dead game...
I'm about 6 years into VR gaming and still not managed to bust a ghost in a virtual world. It's nice to dream maybe this will get a psvr mode.
