Right, we need to talk about Final Fantasy IX Remake again, because the rumours have well and truly returned. This supposed remake first popped up in the now infamous Nvidia leak, which outed loads of potential video game projects. Just after the leak happened in September of last year, Nvidia came out and confirmed that the information was legit — but cautioned that the listings were used for "internal tracking and testing" only. Basically, the company was trying to throw some water on the fire.
The thing is, many of these projects have since been officially announced. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition happened. Street Fighter 6 happened. Crysis 4 happened. Sniper Elite 5 happened. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy happened. A bunch of others happened.
But perhaps most importantly, one of the leak's most outlandish listings turned out to be real very, very recently. We are of course referring to Kingdom Hearts 4, which was officially revealed over the weekend. Together with the aforementioned Chrono Cross remaster, the heavily rumoured Final Fantasy Tactics remake, and the suspiciously trademarked Tactics Ogre: Reborn, it's looking like the Nvidia leak could be bang on — especially when it comes to Square Enix.
Which leads us back to Final Fantasy IX Remake. With every leaked project that becomes a reality, the return of this beloved PlayStation RPG seems increasingly possible. Now, it could just be that the Final Fantasy IX Remake listing did refer to some kind of test, and isn't something that Square Enix is actually working on — but that won't stop the internet from chewing on this rumour for a while yet.
What do you think? Could Final Fantasy IX Remake be real? Do you want Square Enix to revisit Zidane's grand adventure? Maybe have your say in our remakes poll, and then kidnap a princess in the comments section below.

If It true I wonder if it'll be done like FF7 Remake.
Hopefully Nomura's too busy with Kingdom Hearts 4 to put plot ghosts into FF9 Remake.
If it's handled like FF7R no thanks
Just don’t let Nomura near it. Between KH3 and FF7 Remake, years of hype ended in a damp squib for me.
At this point some of the leaked games that are actually in development seem to be getting revealed just to quell everything from the nvidia leak. Especially when you consider KH4 is in early development according to reports, and only some of the leaked games have been released while others only seem to be just getting off the ground in terms of development. I’d be more excited to see what they do with a Tactics remake over FF9, but I also wouldn’t skip out on a remake of 9 either as Vivi is one of my favorite characters in the series as whole, not to mention I like reexperiencing older games in newer graphics, even if the story changes as a whole due to limitations from the original system not being present on current consoles. Let’s just hope they don’t split it up into parts like they did with 7 if a remake of 9 is in the works.
I hope it's true, as FFIX is my 3rd favorite Final Fantasy (behind ffVI and ffVII), but I hope it's not a re-imagining like FFVII remake, even though I did enjoy that.
I hope it keeps it battle system, and isometric view, just completely overhaul the backgrounds and graphics, 60fps 4k resolution. and maybe add some story tweeks here and there. That's all I wanted with the FFVII remake, though I did like what we got (minus plot ghosts)
If true, don’t split it up. Don’t tease us with parted sequels, don’t rush it and ABOVE ALL… don’t forget chocobo hot n cold.
PLEASE SQEENIX. haha, aslong as this is done properly I'd be so game. Very underated game. I feel like they could manage to do this all in one go due to the style. I just can't picture this being created the same way as F7R. I'd love them to make this retro and go completely turn based like the original.
FFIX doesn't' need a complete remake, at least not before finishing FFVIIR. What they need to do is work with the team of the Moguri Mod (see link below) that beautifully updated the game to a modern standard... and release that on platforms other than PC/Steam.
https://sites.google.com/view/moguri-mod/home
Regardless there are other games that need a full remake FAR more. Chrono Trigger and FFVI for starters.
Would love to have FF9 with a modern graphical overhaul and everything else EXACTLY THE SAME
@Shstrick See my link above it's been done already. You're welcome, lol
Its fine , just stay faithful to the original, no need for an alternative story like ff7r
3 installments over the course of a decade? Let's hope they don't do that. And without a hint of news on part 2 of 7s remake...
Can't they just finish the last two parts of FF 7 before doing any more games at this rate it will be ps7 before all parts are out
My all-time favorite Final Fantasy game (though I'm still on debate whether this or FFVII but in terms of story, characters and emotion, FFIX is winning). Hope they get this right and please no convoluted plots.
Hopefully it's done like FF7R. That game is great, and we already have the original so we don't need a version that just re-hashes the original.
FF9 is probably a little bit bigger than 7 so there's 0 chance it's going to be a full fledged remake. If they can't do 7 in one game there's no way they'll spend the resources and do 9 in one and I can't see them breaking up the game like they did 7. It'll be another HD "upgrade", which honestly isn't a bad thing as the game is still incredibly enjoyable today.
As my favourite game of all time, i would love this to be true, so long as Square do the job properly.
Don't let Nomura anywhere near this thing or so help me
I would much rather see a FFVIII remake before IX, I really couldn't get into IX (believe me, I tried). VIII is my holy grail Final Fantasy remake, but not my ultimate RPG remake wish....
@themightyant That does look awesome and those devs definitely need recognition for doing the best remaster. I want that released everywhere and I also want a version with new character models, lighting, brand new backgrounds, sounds, music, effects but with the same scenes, gameplay, etc (I’m thinking more like Crash Insane Trilogy or the recent Spyro trilogy). Optional voice acting would also be great.
One of two final fantasy's I actually finished (13 was the other.... I know). I'm not certain I'd get a remake though, more excited for 7 part two considering I never finished the original version, that and they've actually started that so I'd like that be the priority for them. But none the less cool for those who want it.
@Shstrick Agreed, that sounds wonderful. Would much prefer that to a remake to be honest.
I know it's just a laugh but was it not revealed in interviews that Nomura was the one that wanted to stay as faithful to the original as possible?
@ShogunRok Yeah, if they can do it in the same way as the Crash/Spyro trilogy — keep it the same, but update the graphics (hell they can even keep the soundtrack). Please, none of this multi-part, plot-ghost nonsense.
Those GeForce leaks are getting more accurate as time goes. I'd love to see this, however I'd like to see a remake (as opposed to the AI remaster) of VIII first.
I would love it to play almost exactly like the original, even with static backgrounds, but with the resolution of today's games. Those static backgrounds could be stunning, and we could have the ability to play fully turn based if we wanted.
I think Square Enix should focus on finishing FF7 Remake along with FFXVI first.
FF 6 Remake...Be better...But I'll take 9..
I'd love to see Vivi, Steiner, Quina and Freya with a modern makeover.
@RubyCarbuncle
Hear him!!!
How about a remake of number 9 but without the graphics upgrade comparable to final fantasy 7 remakes.
About using graphics similar to dragon quest 11 or even like Tales of Arise. Will cost less and be easier to make in my opinion whilst also still looking very good
The trials of mana remake would be the perfect example
@AndyKazama
I think VIII is too controversial in the fan base to get that sort of monetary investment.
It’s a love it or hate it Final Fantasy with a ton of flaws. I happen to love it precisely because the game systems are so broken. Nothing better than building a Disc 1 Squall that brutally destroys everything in his path in one hit and never misses. But I get why it’s controversial among the fans.
Plus the story… is all over the place. It has some really good moments, but it’s definitely the weakest story out of the PS1 trilogy.
@Nf157
13 in a nutshell. A wonderful battle system saddled with a crappy story and corridor after corridor until the post game.
But man that battle system was great.
The last thing IX needs is something in the style of VII-R, even without the extended Development Hell part.
The kind of remake I'd like to see is something that keeps the general aesthetic & puts the whole game in the style & detail level of the original's pre-rendered cutscenes.
The thing VII-R proves is that the ps one games are to large to remake in modern graphics. Square-enix just can't handle it anymore. VII-R2 should already be here or at least have a release date on the not so distant future. I'm definitely in for a remake of IX but please just finish your other projects first square.
@OrtadragoonX It was actually my first final fantasy game (and I think my first jrpg besides Pokémon) so I was kind of blown away by it at the time, hadn't experience anything like it. But now that I've played many, many more games like it I'm scared to go back to it and ruin those innocent memories 😅
@Nf157
It still holds up.
For all the hate it gets, it definitely has the most free form character building system in the series. It’s nuts what you can do with the junction system.
Unfortunately, it’s really easy to make the game trivial to beat because of how easy the junction system is to abuse.
No joke, you can build Squall to the point in disc 1 where he will one shot every enemy in the game outside of Omega Weapon using Card Refining. The only reason you can’t one shot Omega weapon is because he’s the only enemy in the game who’s exp level is not attached to Squalls; he defaults to level 100. Other enemies level with you. Once you get to refining cards you can use a GF ability that removes random battles. So you keep Squall at low level (around 20 at the max) and use junctioning to build his stats up; only fight the battles you have to fight. Because all the enemies will be low level and Squall is nearly maxed out thanks to junctioning high level refined magic to stats, the game becomes a cake walk. The other characters aren’t even needed until you get ready to fight Omega Weapon.
@OrtadragoonX a remake is the perfect time to fix those junction system abuses, and actually translate Squall's "whatevers" more closely.
@AndyKazama
Weirdly enough I feel like the game would lose a lot of its charm if they revamped the junction system. Finding ways to abuse it is part of the fun. Sort of like FFII in that regard.
I didn’t have an issue with Squall’s translation. He’s a standoffish prude. I actually like that because he’s fairly unique among final fantasy protagonists because of it. But I understand that most fans vastly prefer his characterization in the JP version.
Oh my god just finish ***** 7
Alot of people will say stuff like 'we don't want remakes or remasters we want new games' but then be begging for more final fantasy remakes lol
If this ends up like Chrono Cross, then I'll pass
@nessisonett I think the phrase is a damp squid , who ever heard of a squib
@Would_you_kindly A squib is a type of firework, hence a damp squib is a letdown.
@nessisonett it was a reference to the IT crowd , when I saw damp squib it made me think of an episode from it
@Would_you_kindly The one British sitcom I barely watched!
I'm totally up for a 9 remake. Once 7 is complete. Do SE think they have unlimited resources and hours in the day for all these projects? I was hoping with KH3 done, and 16 surely nearing the end of development, I thought they would focus on 7 but I guess not
FF IX, being possibly the best FF ever, was released at the worst possible timing, with the dawn of the PS2 and FFX right around the corner.
IMO a remake would give it its proper time to shine (although keeping the battle systems, no FFVII Remake BS).
Also, the Bring Arts figurines they released a few years ago are stunning.
…yeh I’m hyped
It's real but it won't be a remake, it'll be a poor remaster in the same vein as Chrono Cross
You Know Why Can't Something Like Final Fantasy 5 Get a Remake That Game Gets Like No Love From The Fanbase.
@DualWielding that version of FF9 is already on PS4.
Honestly... i think the game is perfect as it is. It already has a remastered version on ps4.
I don't really see what a remake would add cause FFIX is inherently a foolish cartoony game with some serious undertones.
It's not like FF7, which was trying to be a realistic game held back by the tech of the time.
I would rather see a Xenogears remake myself.
Ffvii remake was gutter trash so i really hope not.
Honestly would prefer a new entry in the franchise that harkens back to the series’ roots like FFIX did when it first released. FFIX is a really special game and I love remakes, but it seems like an easy game to mess up for today.
@AndyKazama was 8 mentioned in the leak? its my favorite FF of all time, I would kill for this.
@grdz I don't think it was. 😭
@Snake_V5 So its finished in the year 2200 no thanks.
@Nem Why didnt they just made FF7R more pretty with the new gameplay put in a few extra's and dont let it take ages.
@nessisonett No taste i guess. 🤪
@Andee Cant agree more i dont even care about FF7R and that was my favorite FF game such a pity.
@Flaming_Kaiser Yeah — and I really enjoyed FFVIIR for what it was - there was clearly a lot of effort put into it, but all I really wanted is a graphically updated version of the original with a few QoL features and a better translation — which we KINDA already have, despite the vaseline-smeared backgrounds.
I really wish that the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided sequel can finally happen.
The NVIDIA leak also mentioned a Deus Ex 5, but some people thought it was just Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, while the Deus Ex 4 there is actually the mobile spinoff The Fall, which we don't talk about even if it's a really good mobile game.
Lol from these comments you would think FFVIIR was one of the worst games in the past decade. Pretty much the opposite, I think it was even close to game of the year on this site (by fans)!
9 is my favourite final fantasy, not sure if i'm keen on a remake though. If its coming then i desperately hope they keep the turn based party battle system in.
I'd rather it be a remake/remaster hybrid like the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro Trilogies.
@themightyant sadly I wouldn't consider that a modern graphical overhaul as it looks 90% the same (don't get me wrong it looks good side by side on the original though) but given we played the original on a 480p display or less, it probably looked better back in the day for us. I'd love it if they did something like Ever Crisis
@Andee Same here its a pity if it takes to long i just lose interest. I thought they would do they same like FF13 cut it 3 parts and just finish it in a normal time frame
