Final Fantasy XVI did actually show up during Sony's latest State of Play broadcast. The highly anticipated RPG got a rather stunning new trailer, which sheds a little more light on the game's story and world. Basically, there are people who appear to hold summons within them — and main character Clive apparently houses that fire god Ifrit.
Sadly, we didn't get a release date — but we did get a release window. Final Fantasy XVI is aiming for a summer 2023 launch on PS5.

Can't wait for this one. The entire SoP was really good!
FINALLY. This looks brilliant. Not sure whats going on with all the summon battles, as the game seems like a kaiju fighter for big chunks of the trailer, but heck, i am looking forward to learning more. Summer 2023 though 😭😭
Wow, epic trailer.
Looking good. Devil May Cry vibes. Can’t say I care for some of the summon redesigns, Shiva in particular. Hopefully the political storyline isn’t as dull as FFXII
I would make a joke about it being delayed to late 2024, but Yoshida and his team have enough clout that I mostly believe it (still a chance it slips to later in 2023).
For the combat, it seems it really is just the one guy and no party members. Surprising, this is a first for mainline FF - unless we count Lightning Returns??? (Do we count that?). This will be really controversial but I'm open to it.
FFXVI: Attack on Summon (or Eikon)
Gotta say…the was a disappointment visually for me. Cinematics are awesome as usual. But the gameplay visuals looked a bit ‘drab’…I dunno, something wasn’t doing it for me. Maybe because I’m finally currently playing through ff7 on ps5…guess that had me expecting more.
Least we have a date!
Super hyped for this now. This is the big one for me.
Everything about it was just... wow.
First trailer and this trailer are like 2 different games…
Literally game of the year already. No other game coming in 2023 could possibly have me more hyped than this
I am not digging the art direction of this one, the summons retakes in particular are very uninspired BUT the gameplay seems promising and very out there.
ngl, I did not expect a 2023 release. Thought the year was still far too early but hey, the sooner the better. I just need to secure a PS5 before summer next year.
I’m 37 years old, I like action games.
This is exactly what I was hoping Final Fantasy wouldn’t turn into.
Genuinely surprised at how not interested I was in what this trailer showed, considering I'm usually a big FF fan :/ Can't even put my finger on what exactly I didn't dig, just overall a bit underwhelming.
This looks spectacular.
Going to be the one that says it...if this comes out in summer 2023, what on earth does that mean for FF7R part 2!
Could we be looking at something like:
Ff16 - 2023
Ff7R2 - 2024
Kingdom Hearts 4 - 2025/6?
FF9 remake (rumored) - 26/7?
FFR pt 3 - 2028?
I do think Square needs to be more open about how many titles they have in mind for the 7 remake at this point - who knows, maybe we will hear more later this month
I thought that was pretty rad for a trailer clearly focused on the action element of the game. I know what I’ll be playing in about a years time 😄
Can we just appreciate that the Summons look absolutely freakin’ awesome!
This is what my child mine pictured when I used Summons in the PS1 era of games.
This looks amazing. Finally a Medieval FF again. And look at those big Kaiju fights!
Jeeeeezzzz, that trailer!!! The game looks phenomenal. The new summons design and animation is outstanding. Can't wait to dive into the world of FFXVI. Hope no more delays this time and we'll actually be able to play next summer.
Looks really cool, hopefully the start of an uptick in quality after 15.
I cannot wait to turn off the HUD just from this trailer.
I think this was coming in 2022 till they played Elden Ring like faaaaccckkk...and went back to the drawing board.
This looks so great! This and SF6 are my two highlights of a great show!
So it's basically Strangers of Paradise, the summoner edition. Cool but I still need to see what the story is about first, those gorgeous movies may hide some mediocre stuff.
@Rob_230 odd that a studio with 6k employees can only release one flagship rpg every couple years. Falcom seems to be doing better with a few hundred people.
@Niktaw Well, gameplay apart, which is usually pretty good, Falcom games look like PS2 games that were ported to a PS3.
Shiva looks fantastic.
@BigBoom3ai3 Im 39 years old i rather not but this still looks great. 🤪
Clive...
This may be one of the best video game trailers ever. Square have been killing it with the recent final fantasy trailers (this, VII Remake, Endwalker). That score! Masayoshi Soken is definitely up there with Nobuo Uematsu. Absolute fire
@Athrum lol you are right about that, I expected a decent leap from cold steel 2 to 3, but honestly I can barely tell them apart. However, I decided a few years ago that I’ll take middling graphics with a captivating story, deep characters, and innovative yet classic combat over amazing graphics with a convoluted poorly translated story and progressively bland action leaning combat. Once I got over the fact that I’m using my ps5 to play a bunch of vita ports, I’ve been a happier man for it.
@Serpenterror it’s the same writer that wrote FFXIV Heavensward, which is basically the best final fantasy story, so I’d expect this to be pretty fantastic
@Rob_230 assuming they keep the same release cycle this time around, we’re also due for a major expansion for FFXIV in 2023.
Crazy excited for the game now! Shame we have to wait until Summer 2023, but I'm sure it'll be worth it
I am a lil' bit confused why they ditched the party/team system though.
@Rob_230 At least we only have to wait 1 more year, some people were speculating 2024 or even later lol.
Also personally I think their RPG release schedule will look more like this...
FF9 Remake - Fall 2022/Early 2023
FF16 - Summer 2023 (Fall/Winter 2023 if delayed)
FF7R2 - 2024
Kingdom Hearts 4 - 2025/2026
FF7R3 - 2027/2028
As soon as I watched this trailer which got me incredibly hyped I KNEW 2023 was gonna be the release date
so sad that we have to wait another year. Im so hyped for this. Seeing the trailers and knowing the team behind FFxiv is behind it makes it one of my most anticipated games for next year. Cant wait
Trailer looks absolutely gorgeous!!
I'm so hoping the combat will be deep. FFXV's was way too dull.
Some strategic use of the controller wouldn't hurt.
And for the love of God, don't make the use of magic so cumbersome. Yes, I'm looking at you FFXV 😏.
I'll let the game surprise me with it's summon integration. FFXV's summons just didn't do it for me.
Overall I didn't dislike FFXV as a whole, just a big missed opportunity. Wasn't so bad I didn't finish the game and scored a platinum, unlike FF13.
Anyway, I'm pretty hyped for 16. Really hope it corrects 15's flaws. 🙏🙏
This trailer got me so hyped, can't wait!
Visual design is strong. Music seems decent. Still disappointed by the lack of party-based combat (VII R's combat is pretty much perfect for a modern FF game). No notable characters yet.
It was a pretty well-edited trailer, but my concerns remain.
I am hoping it turns out well, though. The series has been in a pretty dire place since XIII.
FF Summons as big as Godzilla. Hope they are fully playable!
I'm surprised how positive fan response is. I'm more worried about it than I was before. Nothing about the trailer looks like it's a trailer for an FF game to me. More like DMC in a Witcher skin. Is FF now a 3rd person action adventure/action-combo-fighting genre, and not an RPG? The story direction does have some minor FF XII vibes, but really for the wrong reasons. It strikes me as the FF game Ninja Theory might make.
If it were a new IP I'd be excited, but as a mainline FF, I'm scratching my head even more than the boyband announcements for XV. Maybe it'll turn out ok, but so far this seems like a cool new Western take on the Platinum/Capcom action genre rather than a new mainline FF Which is what Stranger was supposed to be a spin-off for.
@Ralizah I've grown to actually like XIII. It was shocking it was so different when it came out, I hated it, but in hindsight it still has a lot of the FF classic feel. XV was very strange. I kind of like it for what it is though. It's incredibly unique, and while it's not exactly FF, it's also something that couldn't not be FF. The game is fine, it's the story that makes no sense, ever. But then again neither does VII and everybody loves that one. And the Luminous engine is hot garbage. Better than Crystal Tools, barely. This one though.... hopefully the trailers just don't represent the game well. I'm hoping. Because as-is it looks like DMC, Witcher 3, and the story of Triangle Strategy had offspring.
The first Trailer was better, this Trailer was all over the place, badly edited. FF16 the floating numbers fighting game..
@NEStalgia There's pretty much nothing classic about it, though. FFXIII was a mess when it first came out, and it arguably holds up worse today. The progression is ultra-linear through most of it, the characters are utterly insufferable, and while the plot isn't terrible, the game suffocates it underneath a mountain of weird Proper Nouns like a bad fantasy novel.
Game looks pretty great, although it irks me that players will be seemingly stuck with one character (hope I'm wrong about that), atleast in the base game.
The summon battles are awesome.
The game definitely looks interesting; however, I feel like I learned very little from that trailer about any aspeect of combat and gameplay aside from what looks like fighting game esque design choices in boss and summon battles. Which could be interesting or go very, very wrong.
@Ralizah Linear progression, yep. Insufferable characters? Yep. (Ok, Snow eventually became awesome in the sequels, and Hope and Vanille became....eh.....less insufferable) Mediocre plot that's mostly incomprehensible? (Would it be FF without that?)
LOL, yeah, I agree with all your criticisms. And they all ruined it for me at the time. But going back to it in the past few years, I play it feeling like it's not really that different from X, and the combat actually plays way better than X. And the characters aren't actually more insufferable than Tidus, it's just lacking an Auron to make up for it. The linearity sucks, and as much as I absolutely hate random encounters, the difference in feel from XIII to XIII-2 taught me how important they were in turn-based FF to pad out the linearity to feel more open and dynamic.
I hated 13 at the time, but I kind of like it now. More than 8. Solid gameplay and the world does have that weird in-between tech-fantasy hybrid of PS1/PS2-era FF. X isn't much less on rails. I honestly think the pure narrow-ness of the corridors mixed with lack of random encounters makes it seem more obviously linear than other similarly linear entries. And the whole L'Cie/Cie'th/jargon thing and the fact it throws you into the world without any idea what anything is while expecting you to know it broke the story for the first playthrough. They made the same mistake with XV if you didn't watch the movie, the anime, and use your secret decoder ring in select boxes of Cocoa Puffs brand cereal before playing.
It grew on me a lot with time, and casting off expectations. I'm sure XVI might, too. By 2036 I'm sure I'll really appreciate it. Compared to FFXXI, the online squad shooter, it'll feel so classic and traditional!
Oh, who am I kidding, this is Square, we'll only be up to FFXVII-2 by then. It'll still be an online squad shooter, though....
OMG! I just had a video game trailer orgasm!!! Super anxious for this one.
@NEStalgia Most of the Final Fantasy games are pretty straightforward plot-wise. FF7 wasn't, but that game was made by PS1-era Square, when Japanese media was still on that post-Evangelion high and everyone wanted to go for that intoxicating mixture of influences from classical psycho-analysis, Jung, and Jewish Gnosticism.
I fully intend to replay the FF games soon (barring the MMOs, since I'm anti-social and hate games where you have to interact with other people), so I fully intend to give it another chance at some point, but I really don't think I'm ever going to not hate that game. We'll see, though.
@Ralizah Everybody loves the first half of 7 and I think forgets the second half. That's probably half of why they're having a hard time with the remake trilogy. Part 1 was easy. The last half of the game went entirely off the rails and made no sense. Advent children made it even worse. Crisis Core put it next to XV.
LOL, yeah I do have that problem with XIV. Everyone praises it and I just can't do it.
You never know, you might be surprised. Had the same opinion you do until I went back and started it again (didn't finish, too much backlog) and realized it's actually kinda fun. Especially after the boyband. Though I admit, I mostly do like XV. It's weird, it's not really FF, but it's unique and memorable and there's really nothing quite like it. It's just that the whole game feels like a fever dream, and that's how you remember it, too.
