Following on from the glorious re-reveal of Final Fantasy XVI at Sony's latest State of Play, Square Enix has saw fit to confirm the key staff members who are working on the upcoming RPG. Most of these names have been reported on or rumoured before, but seeing them all locked in is, in our humble opinion, the biggest reason to get hyped for the 2023 release.
Just take a look at the talent that's on offer here, as per the official press release:
- Producer - Naoki Yoshida (FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, DRAGON QUEST X, DRAGON QUEST: Monster Battle Road)
- Main Director - Hiroshi Takai (FINAL FANTASY V, SaGa Frontier, THE LAST REMNANT)
- Creative Director & Original Screenplay - Kazutoyo Maehiro (FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, FINAL FANTASY XII, THE LAST REMNANT)
- Localization Director – Michael-Christopher Koji Fox (FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, FINAL FANTASY XI Online, FINAL FANTASY VII Dirge of Cerberus)
- Art Director - Hiroshi Minagawa (FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, FINAL FANTASY XII, FINAL FANTASY TACTICS)
- Combat Director - Ryota Suzuki (DEVIL MAY CRY 5, Dragon’s Dogma, MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2)
- Character Design - Kazuya Takahashi (FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, FINAL FANTASY XI Online, FINAL FANTASY X)
- Composer - Masayoshi Soken (FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Nanashi no Game series)
That first credit is the one that everybody already knows. Yoshida spearheaded the team that brought Final Fantasy XIV back from the brink, and then transformed it into the staggeringly successful MMO that we know today. Alongside Maehiro, Fox, Minagawa, Takahashi, and Soken, it's clear that XIV's biggest players are all directly involved in the production of Final Fantasy XVI — which is incredibly reassuring considering how brilliantly realised the aforementioned MMO is. In short, these guys know how to make a damn good game.
And then there's Suzuki — arguably the most interesting name on this already impressive list. As credited, Suzuki was largely responsible for the combat direction of Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon's Dogma — two of the finest examples of action combat in modern gaming. Based on what we've already seen of its battle system, there's more than a hint of those two Capcom titles in Final Fantasy XVI. Hugely exciting stuff.
What do you make of Final Fantasy XVI's staff selection? Place your faith in the XIV boys below.

A more medieval style and slicker combat is exactly what I wanted FF15 to have. So hopefully these are steps in the right direction
I know turn based vs action divides a lot of the FF community, but DMC5 and DD are nothing to sneeze at. If the story holds up and I think it will, I’m okay with combat that’s not turn based. FF7 Remake was a great action oriented title which still felt like an evolution for the series in the right direction in terms of combat systems.
It seems like they are just going all in on a stylish action RPG at this point so getting the combat director of Devil May Cry 5 (one of if not the best hack and slash games I've ever played) on board is reason enough for myself to be pumped!
Thats a powerhouse of a team
I enjoyed the political nature of XII’s narrative and thought it was populated by some fantastic and memorable characters so Maehiro’s name is a big boon for me.
Edit: Apparently he wasn’t a writer on XII, which pretty much invalidates my comment 🙃 ah well, still excited.
Well that explains why the combat looked so DMC to me. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.
I got hyped since the trailer of last week. This game is in good hands.
I'm still very very uncertain. I like DMC and Baoynetta. But FF is an RPG, not an action game, and I'm not sure a mainline FF should just suddenly become an action game. Seems like the main game wants to be the spinoff that SoP is.
What I expect is a good game, that's not really FF in anything but name and character design. Something that should have been a new IP or spinoff.
Masayoshi Soken!!! 😃😃😃
While also missing some of the turn based FF that I have know and loved, I'm quite curious to see that the combat director also had a hand in Marvel vs Capcom 2. Imagination running wild, it'd be great to see some tag-team style effects coming in to play, with switching stances (jobs) or summons...
Everything points out to this game being at least solid, at most groundbreaking.
I think it's gonna be the first great entry since FFXII
@NathanCox I feel like all the latest games have been slowly testing and integrating the different systems at play to build this together, going from XV to VII, to SoP (different team, but still...) to this
@J2theEzzo It's definitely got some kind of summon switching system. In the latest gameplay at least, Clive can swap between summons while he's fighting in normal combat, which changes the moves and abilities at his disposal. A bit like switching weapons in Devil May Cry, I suppose!
@WadeIsInsane True! Fingers crossed!
Just need a PS5 now!
Ryota suzuki for the solid combat and HOPEFULLY similar to the perfect pawn system of dragons dogma and hiroshi takai who's worked on my favourite final fantasy, V.
I knew Soken was doing the music when you heard the choir in the first trailer (which I think it's an absolute banger).
This is going to be a game!
Have we seen anything about this even being an RPG, at all? Everything we've seen so far gives the impression of an on-rails third person action-adventure called Final Fantasy. I know for XIII they said they weren't trying to make an RPG, but a new type of game (and it was literally on rails), and I worry that they've again decided FF isn't an RPG, it's just an action-adventure series. We've seen very little, but from what we have seen I'd feel more comfortable calling HFW an RPG than FFXVI.
Maybe they're just trying to cash in on Souls, which I guess is technically an RPG, but I really just see it as a combat game.
@ShogunRok Sounds like Xenoblade 2 with switching Blades. I guess that's maybe hopeful.
I never expected turn based combat to make a return (I wish) but the apparent absence of even so much as party members concerns me a bit. If you do only play as lone Clive the whole game, I feel like a lot of the FF heart and soul will be missing.
@NEStalgia Your comment is everything. Haha. See mine just above as well. We're on the same page.
I loved FF15’s combat despite the FF community’s split on the game. I hope FF16 does its own thing and amazes.
Yoshida has earned my trust, that's enough for me. I'm sure he's put together a team of right talent for it.
@NEStalgia "Maybe they're just trying to cash in on Souls..."
I don't usually like to be so cynical, but I have thought the same thing since the first trailer. Not that FromSoft has a copyright on the genre and setting, but Im not entirely sure that I wanted Final Fantasy: Medieval Grimdark Edition.
Soken was brought out for this too? No rest for the poor guy.
XVI was looking perfect. I thought the UI and special lens flare like effects on the new combat were excessive (and brought the dreaded XV to mind), but i still have full belief this will be a good game.
That's an impressive staff list for sure! Looking forward to the game even more so now.
if it turns out this is a solo game with no other party members, that will be quite weird and unnecessary for a final fantasy game. the director is unproven which further adds some doubt to the project. so far it looks pretty solid though and has potential to be the best mainline entry in over a decade.
When the creative director is the guy from FF XII, you know it's in good hands.
@NEStalgia
FF has been a subpar action franchise for over a decade already ... it's about time they lean into it all the way.
