Sony’s previously announced Gran Turismo movie adaptation, with District 9’s Neil Blomkamp in the directorial chair, will speed to cinemas on 11th August, 2023. The flick, which was said to be early in production last month, has been penned by Jason Hall – and will be based upon a true story. No casting announcements have been made.
“The film is the ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver,” a Deadline report reads. It’s not clear which of the GT Academy alumni this will be based on, but there are a handful of candidates – including Lucas Ordoñez and Jann Mardenborough.
Sony tried to get a movie based on Ordoñez off the ground about a decade ago, but it never materialised. Of note, though, filmmaker Dana Brunetti was involved in that original pitch – and will serve as a producer on this new film, alongside Doug Belgrad and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
With the film little over a year away, we suspect we’ll be learning a lot more about it in the coming months. In the meantime, does this plot device appeal to you? Is this something you’d want to watch in theatres? Steer your way into the comments section, and let us know.

I never thought about it from a GT academy perspective, makes it more intriguing now.
Wish he was still making his Alien movie instead.
This is outrageous! I don't like driving games/films. WHAT ABOUT MEEEEEEE !!!!!!!??????
@BritneyfR_ee I am sad we never got to see that movie. Safe to say it would probably be a lot better than Covenant!
This is smart. This is a story that could appeal to a much broader audience of film goers than simply the fans of the game.
Sounds truly terrible. So basically it’s top gun… only instead of being the best pilot and going to top gun you’re the best GT teenage Sony pony… sent to an elite group of other GT players. Maybe they’ll even be a gamer girl in there. And your best gamer friend dies first day on the track, blinded by reflections as GT has no on track ray tracing….
Actually, I’d watch that.
So... Basically it's The Wizard (2022) but with cars?
@MFTWrecks People could of said the same about Need for Speed and look how that movie turned out.
This makes me sad for Neil Blomkamp, I love his films. A Gran Turismo movie? wtf
@BritneyFR_ee With you 100%
This is rather baffling. Blomkamp doesn’t really seem like a great fit either. Although I’m not sure I’ve actually enjoyed any of his movies since District 9.
@MaccaMUFC NFS was a ***** F&F knockoff. Audiences could tell because it was apparent in all the marketing.
This is likely going to be a realistic drama, have some action, and it'll appeal to general sports/car movie fans above beyond racing videogame fans. There have been some great car movies in the past few years (Ford vs Ferrari, Rush) and this will hopefully shoot for those highs and not the BS lows of F&F.
@Perturbator I liked parts of Prometheus and Covenant but they both have infuriatingly stupid characters in them, which drags everything else down. If those movies had the crew from the movie Sunshine, they wold be so much better. Loved David though, he was great.
They could have at least made it a Wipeout movie, but, nooo...
Blomkamp shouldn't be allowed behind the camera full-stop, let alone Alien. He made one great film, and has had diminishing returns since, culminating in the excruciatingly bad Demonic!
@nessisonett district 9, 13 was on hunger games.
@Freakdahouse Of course! Didn’t even notice my mistake
Blomkamp is a terrible director outside of District 9, but this is such a strange idea that I'm intrigued.
@MaccaMUFC Nothing wrong with the NFS movie. At least it focused alot on racing and cars unlike Fast And The Furious movies which I can't stand anymore
I enjoyed the fast and furious movies up to around 6....the last 3 were a bit naff...i've always been a big fan of the psuedo documentary style movies such as the steve mcqueen movie le mans or senna..not sure about this to be honest.
@AdamNovice What's GT Academy? I'm not familiar with the series.
This sounds absolutely horrendous. I’ll still watch it. Haha.
@BritneyfR_ee Unfortunately you’ll have to wait till Ridley Scott releases his vice grip on the franchise before that ever happens. We can expect more Prometheus rubbish instead.
A mockumentary then? Probably the best way to go. That NFS movie was awful. That said. Not excited. Proof is in the pudding as they say
Not sure how different it will be from Word’s Fastest Gamer. Quite an interesting watch if people haven't seen it.

Those first five words aren't something you'd ever expect to read
