Square Enix has announced Octopath Traveler II, and quite surprisingly, it's getting PS5 and PS4 versions. The original game never released for Sony systems, so this is the first time PlayStation gamers will have the chance to experience the RPG series. Check out the reveal trailer above, which confirms a 24th February 2023 release date.
Sporting the HD-2D art style, the sequel takes place in a new region and introduces another eight stories to follow from eight different characters. A day-night cycle has been introduced, and each character will have different abilities to use depending on the time of day.

The right thing to do would be PS ports of the original now
why release the second one but not the first? face palm
@AndyKazama I expect it to be announced during the later SOP, I predict it will release on ps plus as well like game pass
Have to be honest, I didn’t care for the original game. Wonderful soundtrack, beautiful design, but the writing, stories, and characters were generic and poorly done to me. So I’m in the minority likely of not being excited for this, but I’ll keep an eye on it. Happy for you all that are hyped for it!
@Crayven might come later on, especially if it sells well? Like how Nexomon 2 was released on PS4 and Nexomon 1 came later on PS5.
Octopath traveller confirmed for State of Play then
WHAT THE...
They didn't even release the first one on PS4.
What are you thinking, Square
@Milktastrophe here's hoping fingers crossed
Beautiful looking forward to this.
@Leon_93 I REALLY hope you're right! I would like to play it but not at full price. I'm excited for the Sequel.
Didn't expect a PS4/5 version but it's a welcome surprise
@3Above Same here buddy, I was sooooo close to buy the first one on Steam. Fingers crossed.
@Leon_93 I hope you're right. So many great announcements so far today, so I'm feeling good about that idea
@Enriesto
I'm with you actually. It's a shame too as there's a lot to like but the cast of characters just killed it for me. Hopefully the sequel has a better cast. If it does I might give it a whirl.
Originals gotta finally be coming later today
Bet 1st game will be out and shown at tonights state of play
My favorite Switch game, tough decision what console to get it on.
Honestly hope the characters actually interact with one another.
Cool.i will get this game.octopath traveler 2 for my ps4 pro.n.i.c.e.word up son
If it's anything like the 1st one, I can forget about this one too. Still not a fan of the hd 2d style but if this one actually manages a decent story and dialogue with good amounts of party banter and interaction, Ill keep it in the watch list
Still need to play the first one.
Really surprised this is hitting Playstation, considering.
Did not play the first one until it hit PC GamePass. Glad we get more options from Day 1 this time around.
Probably started the 2nd with multiplatform in mind. And then work on porting 1 after. Same thing happened with Trails of Cold Steel on Switch. We got #3 first and then #1 a year later.
The first has been for over a year on XBox now, and I doubt Xbox paid them for "second year" exclusivity to keep it from PlayStation so.... where is the first one? Maybe as usual, Square is waiting for Sony to give them money, that seems to be how they operate these days.
Edit: huh... Octopath Traveler 1 is not on PS but its on Xbox, Octopath Traveler 2 is coming to PS but not to XBox... wth... Square??? 😒
I guess they see this as a Switch Game First and foremost, and like to troll everyone else.
I played the first game on Switch so glad I can play this on PS4 now.
Thought the first game was a bit overrated the gameplay was good & the graphics were stunning but it was a bit inconsistent in the story telling & the way the character missions were structured.
After a few hours you would know exactly what to expect. Talk to a character, use your specials for something, dungeon-> boss fight.
As for the story telling some stories are more interesting than others & that just the way it is with this many playable characters.
My favorite announcement of the day and I'm so excited it's coming to PS5! I'll definitely get it on there. I loved this game so much, it's my favorite switch game.
You can release a dual pack to release part 1 and 2 in one pack ill gladly pay full price for that.
@Flaming_Kaiser, Well said, it would be nice to have a even just a digital version, but if they could also put the first one on the PS5 disc would be amazing.
@Sil_Am I dont believe the games are 100GB they should be able to fit them on one disc?
The first one would be cool but...whatevs.
truly baffling the first game still has not made it over to playstation. absoltue stupidity, really. glad to see the sequel is coming over, but i'm not going to play it without going through the first game in that order! myself, like many others, have an underpowered pc and likely won't be able to play it over there so come on now... sort this out, it's been FOUR YEARS already! it even got a stadia release...
The first game is incredible. If any PlayStation fans here own a Switch as well then I'd highly recommend it.
Think this is a sign the Square Enix purchase is incoming.
The lesson is regarless of owning a PS,PC or Xbox you should always own a switch.
Seems bizarre that the original Octopath Traveller has still to see light of day,(unless its Gamepass connection has been the reason.🤔). Still, hopefully PS Gamers will at least gain some gameplay improvements to go with the shiny new sequel.
Octopath Traveller 2 features a new story with new characters in a different scenario, so there should't be problem for anyone who didn't play the first title Anyway, it's an highly recommended game for any old school RPG fan!
@Kyevo8814 @Rmg0731 @AndyKazama @3Above @Rob_230 @Leon_93 Sadly they never announced a PlayStation remaster/port of the first Octopath Traveler game during September's State of Play.
Hopefully you can play this sequel without any knowledge of what occurred during the first game.
@KidBoruto No problem, already bought the first game on Steam during their TGS sale. Apparently is an all new adventure so you don't need prior knowledge to play the sequel.
@Leon_93 That's good to know, was worried!
Why do they release Octopath Traveller 2 when there is no Octopath Traveller 1 on PS4?
Hope we get the first game…
@Tharsman The first game is available everywhere - Apple Store iOS Mac, Epic Games, probably supported on GFN, Switch, Xbox…
Why not on PSN?!
