Developer Arkane has confirmed what fans have suspected for a long while now, that the excellent time-bending shooter Deathloop is set in the wildly imaginative universe of the Dishonored series.
The studio's creative director Dinga Bakaba confirmed the relationship between the two on the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast, which comes to us via PC Gamer. In the video, Bakaba states that Deathloop is "one of the futures of the Dishonored world."
Fans have long theorised a connection between the two, given that both games share functionally similar powers like Shift and Blink or Nexus and Domino (although that could have been reasonably denied as recycling ideas between the two series). Bakaba said that he has enjoyed watching fans share theories online and goes further, stating, "we envisioned Deathloop to be happening in the future, after Death of the Outsider." Death of the Outsider was a standalone piece of DLC for Dishonored 2, the final act in the Dunwall saga.
Bakaba goes on to describe his favourite tease, which was under our noses the whole time, emblazoned on the Heritage shotgun: "On the side, there is a little logo that you can barely see," Bakaba said. "But now that we've added idle breaks where the character plays with his guns, you can actually see that the logo is Dunwall Tower."
So there you have it, official confirmation of the link between the two series. It's cool to see the theory confirmed, and bittersweet, knowing that it's still up in the air as to whether we see another Arkane studio game on Playstation, considering parent company Bethesda's acquisition by Microsoft. What do you think of the link between the two? Let us know in the comments section below.

I loved the original Dishonored, I didn't enjoy Deathloop in quite the same way though. It's a shame we won't see another Dishonored game on PlayStation, I find it quite sad that their future games will be locked to a system who's fanbase care more about 'clout' than actual games.
So basically Deathloop was Dishonored 3 which makes sense.
@Sqush-Pare That's a really childish comment and smacks of 'poor me'.
And it's 'whose' not 'who's'.
@__jamiie I always love when people end with a spelling correction.
@__jamiie you're partially right, I am personally saddened that I won't be able to play any future Dishonored games without having to fork out for a second system. I have considered buying a Series S but don't really want to downgrade to a system that isn't truly current gen.
@Flaming_Kaiser How's this for a spelling correction.
Deathl̶o̶o̶p̶ Deathpoop.
@Sqush-Pare There are many games on Series S that run at 120fps. That's current gen IMO.
I've seen one hooked up to a 4K screen, resolution didn't look great tbh.
So I was right in calling this dishonoured 3 to begin with
The real tragedy of MS buying Bethesda/Arkane, is that it's very unlikely that we'll see VR versions of their games now...and many of their games are just perfect for the medium.
Microsoft hasn't really shown much interest for VR, and likely won't unless it goes mainstream in a big way, in case they will just buy out someone else to get into it.
@UltimateOtaku91 Sure, and Thor is actually Iron Man 4
@__jamiie You talk about Sony putting games like GoWR on Ps4 as a bad thing even though it has already shown that doesn't have an impact on development seeing as how Forbidden West is the best looking next gen game available ATM and it's the dreaded cross gen. Then you try and say Series S is current gen because it can run some cross gen games at 120fps lol? The hypocrisy. Even developers have come and said that Series S will hold Series X back because of its far weaker GPU and massive RAM reduction. The only games that run at 120fps on Series S are cross gen lower end games. Series S is supposed to be a 1440p console and it can barely run AAA cross gen games at that resolution.
Halo Infinite can literally drop down to 540p on it's 120fps mode on Series S and that's a last gen first party game. Real next gen indeed!
@Yupyupyup @__jamiie The Series S is a budget machine that is strong enough to run current games that are just too advanced for X1. Nothing more, nothing less.
Though it is a shame it doesn't meet that 1440p promise; but again, budget machine that at least provides some kind of access to the latest games.
On topic: Pretty cool that Deathloop is part of the Dishonored universe! I dabbled in Dishonored, but never really sat down and played it.
@Sqush-Pare nothing wrong with the first comment you did here. Some just don't understand how expensive it becomes having all the latest consoles and all the best games and subs for all these consoles, can get very expensive on top of all the other bills. Every right to be concerned on all these potential 3rd party sequels now no longer becoming available on a Playstation. It's not just a few games either as most of you will know
Outer Worlds
Hellblade
DOOM
Wolfenstein
Rage
Dishonored
Starfield
Fallout
Evil Within
And then all the huge amount of ActiBlizz sequels when it goes through. These were all 3rd party games that were almost available everywhere. If that's not a manipulation of the market using their trillion then I don't know what else is. What I find funny is the possibility that all these games sold way more on a Playstation console in comparison to their now new owners. No such thing as a level playing field for Xbox no more and I can see why that's their approach these past few years when they've been behind PS for the 20 years they've been console gaming when it's on a level playing field. Well aware PS ain't no angles either but I do get fed up of reading the false comparisons that PS has done when talking about these acquisitions when there's literally no real comparisons on this level, none whatsoever. Then you here Xbox workers that chubby fella and Spencer (who everyone thinks is a God but really he just has more money to spend than everyone else) say this is competition lol wow really, buying hundreds of games that were all 3rd party as competition funny that is
Loved the first Dishonored, it was truly unique for it's time, but I just could not get into Dishonored 2, and I honestly have no idea why, I bought it day one, and was super hyped to play it... but I just didn't enjoy it, the charm of the first game, I just could not find it in Dishonored 2. As for Deathloop, it was WAY overhyped, and I didn't understand what was so good about it, it was painfully average to me, I played it for 3 hours before turning it off, honestly Ghostwire Tokyo was the far superior game, yet no one really talks about it, and from the looks of it, no one really supported Ghostwire Tokyo either.
My best friend who plays a huge variety of games of varying genres, he RARELY if ever hates a game, but he absolutely DESPISED Deathloop, he played it for 5-6 hours, turned it off, and the next day, he took the game back and got a full refund... he even more rarely ever returns a game.
Loved Dishonored but 2 was a cold steaming turd so I have no more interest in this has been franchise
@Saucymonk
I never understood such blatant hate for Dishonored 2. It didn't have as good of a plot as the first I will give you that but Dishonored 2 had the more refined gameplay and superior more open-ended levels. The Clockwork Mansion alone is one of the most brilliantly designed levels I have ever seen in a video game and seemingly every time I replay it I find brand new routes I wasn't aware of which is top tier design through and through. Not to mention the level where you constantly have to switch between different time periods or the level in the district obscured by dust storms which requires you to change up your playstyle. There's creativity that not even the first game possessed.
I’m not sure how Deathloop fits into that universe or why it even matters, TBH.
Not surprising at all since it's the same developer.
Dishonored 2 was the best in the series for me. The level design and powers were absolutely brilliant.
@PegasusActual93 Well said. I dunno how you can love the first and not be blown away by the 2nd. Those people should just say maybe they weren't having the peace of mind at the time of playing 2, it happens, you could have a lot going on you wouldn't enjoy certain things at certain times. 2's level design is never before seen.
@Beerheadgamer82 Sometimes I feel like I'm in a different dimension when I see press/users praising this MS acquisition spree. 1) It's not adding ANYTHING to the market and 2) It's shrinking the user base of said games.
I thought developers wanted everyone to play their stuff. Sony certainly has a history of timed exclusive deals and very cozy with SE, but this is just crazy if Bethesda/ACTI/BLZ all go PC/Xbox only. This is not competition. MS is not winning people over to their ecosystem with amazing content or features, it's simply buying what's popular and throwing it onto their streaming service.
Hopefully in 3-5 years everyone is happy with their console. Nintendo has carved out a nice niche for themselves so if 3rd parties all want to sell to MS, then there isn't anything PS only users can do about it if they like those franchises but go where they go.
@Omnistalgic
Exactly. These acquisitions do nothing but create a monopoly on games. Sure Microsoft pays developers well to put their products on Gamepass which ensures a lot of developers are guaranteed financial security, but it simply isn't fair to brute force your way into owning everything just because you are one of if not the richest corporation on the planet and can afford to just buy everything. It especially is baffling to me because Microsoft is an American company and America has anti-trust laws that are supposed to specifically stop s--t like this from happening. And yet they aren't being enforced. This wouldn't even be the first time Microsoft was accused of anti-trust practices. In 2001 Microsoft went against the U.S Supreme Court for using very unethical and illegal practices to make their apps (namely Explorer and their Office programs), mandatory on all computers including non-Microsoft computers such as Apple MACs.
@PegasusActual93 I think it's because even with Activision under MS, it's not considered a monopoly. They would have to try and get EA/TakeTwo for the anti-trust laws to kick in. It still feels very underhanded because as you said, MS marketshare won't really be earned through natural competition, but just using their wealth to purchase the most popular IP and drive subs. Unless they start giving me Xbox's for free on a sub lol, I'm not going to be okay with how they are trying to make Xbox more popular.
@__jamiie He's not wrong though
