Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is arguably the most anticipated PS5 game, isn’t it? Well, we suppose Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 probably just about pips it – but it’s definitely close. Any scraps of information about the sequel to Square Enix’s remake series are welcome then, and we’ve got the tiniest of tidbits courtesy of a big 2023 preview in Famitsu magazine.
As translated by Gematsu, producer Yoshinori Kitase had the following to say: “I hope to be able to deliver an update on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when the timing is right! Please look forward to it!”
The game is still tentatively scheduled to release in late 2023, although realistically it’s hard to imagine Square Enix launching the remake’s sequel in the same year as Final Fantasy 16, which is currently slated for 22nd June. Nevertheless, we’ll be surprised if next year came and went without some meaty trailers for Rebirth!

I fully expect Rebirth to be delayed to 2024. The main reason is because it's really the one game I'm looking forward to next year and it getting delayed would keep in line with the entire PS5 gen so far.
Rebirth is definitely the most anticipated title. I truly feel spoiled with 2 Final Fantasy games coming in 2023. Honestly can’t decide which I’m more excited about! I’d have preordered Rebirth already if I could!
I don’t expect to see Rebirth until 2024 but of course would gladly take it this year if it’s truly ready. The amount of games that we for sure know are coming out this coming year is insane not counting the tentative “TBA 2023” games. Super excited!
My most anticipated game is Final Fantasy XVI but that might be just because it comes out before Spider-Man and Rebirth
I do see it coming out in 2023 it is ff 35 anniversary.
@C25CLOUD that’s a good point to consider. It would make sense for them to push as hard as possible to release it during the anniversary.
That's hardly a tidbit, just an obvious statement. Yes, more information on Rebirth will indeed be relayed at some point, who knew.
Anyway, looking forward to the game. There's a lot of potential to this project that couldn't be realized while the action was limited to just one city.
N.i.c.e. take your time.final fantasy 7 rebirth is going to be excellent.word up son
Someone needs to ask him why FF7 Remake isn't on Xbox.
@Snake_V5 I thought they explained it recently, Sony has a contract with SE to keep it exclusive. I dunno about Crisis Core tho.
Depends, 2022 SE was in quickfire mode, but with a major release like ff16… I'm sure they'll want to pace it a bit with ff7 rebirth.
Just never mention it again! Forget the whole thing happened!
FF7 Remake was the first FF game I’ve ever played and I am soooo ready for Rebirth!!!!
Wait, wasn't this announce for "next winter"? That means also 2024, i really doubt it will come out in 2023.
Because Persona 6 isn’t officially announced, this is by far my most anticipated game. Whenever it comes, Day 1 purchase.
@Uncharted2007 It can't be delayed to 2024 when it was always coming in 2024. They said it was releasing "next Winter" and next Winter begins on December 21st 2023. "Next Winter" is basically a coy way of saying "Early 2024".
@somnambulance You won't be getting two main FFs in 2023, I'm afraid.
@Orpheus79V Then it was incorrectly assumed by others as a 2023 game.
That said, your logic could go one step further. Hypothetical: Let's say something tragic happens and it gets delayed to 2025. Well... it was never delayed as it was always to be released in 2025 as that's when it released. It would negate delays ever happening.
Considering I still haven't seen much that makes me want to care about Stranger of Paradise 2: Final Fantasy XVI, or even consider it a canon mainline title, it looks like crisis core will have to tide me over until 2023.
But, let's just take a moment to think about how absurd it is that we're discussing if a second part of a trilogy that part 1 released in 2020 will or will not be released in 2023, for a title that was announced as a single title at E3 2014.......
@Nepp67 The exclusivity was for 1 year which expired. If Sony still had paid exclusivity you'd think they'd be proudly announcing it openly rather than the weird kind of nod and wink no comment stuff. Not much point paying for it if you're not going to say it for marketing. It's pretty weird and probably some sort of square antics. If they do have some sort of deal it's a backroom unofficial secret deal they can't advertise which would be pretty sketchy stuff.
@Uncharted2007 Was it ever confirmed for 2023? As far as I remember the announcement trailer said "Next Winter" which would go from December 2023 - March 2024
Personally far more interested in 16.
@NEStalgia I believe the deal was 6 months of initial exclusivity with the chance to extend, on Sonys end. It was picked up by Sony, but was not confirmed for how long it was extended. I'd assume it's now indefinitely.
@NomNom possibly, but the weird thing is, if so, half the point of that is to use it in marketing. But they're not. If they paid for exclusivity , whether 1 year or perpetual, if they owned exclusivity rights they'd market it for the same reason they marketed it originally. To me that means there's only two possibilities:. They can't advertise exclusivity rights because they don't actually have exclusivity rights despite appearances, or they can't advertise it because it's a cloak and dagger unofficial back door arrangement they can't admit to for some reason. If they simply had the rights, they'd be trumpeting that. That's why they pay for it.
Square does weird things, and seem to play platforms for money offers. Then there's crisis core that went everywhere when it was Sony exclusive until then. And then octopath that was switch, but then went Xbox and not ps. Then octopath2 going to switch and ps but not Xbox... None of it makes sense. But if Sony actually purchased actual exclusivity they'd certainly market that rather than the no comment stuff so there's something odd going on. Might be as simple as square trying to bribe ms/nin and Sony just benefiting from "implied exclusivity" in the meantime.
I'm more excited for rebirth then FFXVI, but that's because I love the world and characters of VII. I think it's great to see such different FF's settings and it will be exciting to see which one will be considered the better one.
@NEStalgia @NomNom
Not sure on the site's legitimacy, but saw this on reddit yesterday funnily enough.

I just started Final Fantasy Crisis Core Reunion and its awesome. Think I will go for a replay of Final Fantasy VII remake after not played the Ps5 version. No rush for Rebirth take the time and make it awesome
This is indeed high on the list of my most anticipated upcoming games - definitely beyond Spiderman 2 for me (which I imagine I won't play). I'll be surprised if this really does come out in 2023 but that's fine given we'll be getting FFXVI.
My main hope is this next game isn't so padded out with filler. FF7R was very good, but there were some awful sections which felt thrown in just to extend the run time. The part in the warehouse especially springs to mind.
Like others here I've just started Crisis Core. Felt like there was a bit of a slow start but getting into it now. Still not sure I really understand how the DWM works but I don't think you really need to!
2023 whatever happens is going to be a bit of a banger.
FF16. The pixel remasters of 1 to 6 and potentially 7 remake pt2.
The victory fanfare is going to be a constant sound in my house.
To be fair, they said next winter which spans to mid march 2024. They never said 2023.
Well my most anticipated game comes out July 7th (along with a 1000 other games) so I really don't care right now about games with no release date xD
I’m just happy we got Crisis Core to hold us over. I really enjoyed that.
If XVI is the tent pole summer release and Spider-Man the winter one then surely VII-2 will be a 2024 game? The release schedule for 23 is already stacked up as well.
As much as i loved FF7 I'm waiting for a complete physical release of FF7R to play it in one go.
@mariomaster96 Many sites, including this one, have it listed as a 2023 game currently.
They actually said Winter 2023 during the live stream but the video they showed at the same time said “Next Winter”
This seems to be why there is some misunderstanding. Even Next Winter is an odd expression as it was stated before the current winter began so technically this winter was the next winter. Although some people prescribe to the idea that Next X means the X next year rather than the very next X occurring…(this might be an Americanism)
@ChrisDeku so, does that mean this friday is next friday?
@nookie_egg Yeah that quote makes the rounds in Xbox circles with the opposite spin (evil Sony is paying unprecedentedly to specifically block games on one competitor!). Bit when you look at it it's hard to tell if it's really at face value that Sony did that (which would be legally questionable and definitely a reason Sony wouldn't actually admit it), but it might also be Microsoft trying to present normal exclusivity as "being blocked by Sony.". The inclusion of Bloodborne in the comment makes the whole thing sound like it's lawyers not fully researching it since that's Sony owned IP.
I think the only thing we can know pretty sure is that Sony doesn't own exclusivity on this outright, at least in legally sound traditional ways because that's the only reason they wouldn't market that and use the "only on playstation" branding etc. But whatever the secret is is quite a mystery.
Then again it's the same square that announced dq11 on "NX" then released on PS4 and 3ds, but half complete on PS4, didn't talk about the NX (switch) version "for adult reasons", then released the switch version as a new completed game as exclusive then released it on ps4 (and xb/pc) as a new game with no upgrade and worse graphics, abandoning the pretty PS4 original graphics. Square... Does weird things....
@Loftimus when is next week? It is the week starting on the 2nd or is it the week starting the 9th?
When is next year? Is it 2023 or 2024?
In almost all cases the Next thing is literally the next occurrence of that thing. That is by defenition what ghat word means.
The next Friday is therefore the 30th.
@ChrisDeku lol. No mate. This winter is coming or here now, when it's over it becomes last winter and next winter becomes this winter... Do you get me?
@Orpheus79V they also said winter 2022 for Crisis core, it came out Dec 2022
Winter 2023 can mean anywhere from December 2023 to March 2024, but I'd be okay if the game was delayed into Spring 2024 or later.
I'm less confident in this entry than I was in the original. Partially because I'm unsure how they're going to tackle the more open world feel once you leave Midgar, and partially because of how they indicated they were willing to stray heavily from the narrative direction of the original near the end of Remake.
So we'll see. If it turns out well, though, it could potentially be a system-seller for me.
