Square Enix has uploaded another character-focused trailer for next month's Octopath Traveler II, which is mainly about Ochette the hunter and Castti, who's into apothecary. Sporting the lovely HD-2D art style, footage then changes gears to discussing Traveler's Tales, which act as side quests for the many characters in the JRPG. Check it out above.
As for how Ochette acts in and out of combat, her main ability during exploration allows her to befriend people she meets in town and then bring them on the journey with her. She can then trigger fights by setting captured monsters on townsfolk. If she doesn't want to do that, though, the enemies can be turned into items instead. Then, her latent power activates special skills themed around monsters.
Castti, on the other hand, is suffering from a large dose of amnesia at sea. She can talk to townspeople to acquire information and even send them to sleep where they're standing using medicine. In combat, she focuses on healing and concoctions to deal damage.

Looks beautiful.
Have you asked SE directly if they noticed that the first game is not on PS? Would be great if they release that one too.
Really hoping it's true they fixed the story and party interactions in this game. But the trailers so far have just been like the 1st game where they focus on a specific character and their own story
Still the game does look a lot better than 1. Very tempted to pick it up
It's a lovely looking game. I actually think this is the first of Square-Enix's HD-2D-style games that have come to Playstation, right?
@Judal27 The impression I've had from these trailers is that the structure is similar to the first, and they just included more side-quests/sub-plots where the characters interact. I'm not getting the feeling this will turn into a Tales of.../Xenoblade-style experience where the party feels like a cohesive team, though.
@Ralizah Yep, this will be the first one on PlayStation.
@LiamCroft And then Dragon Quest III is probably coming as well.
Hopefully Triangle Strategy will eventually make the leap as well. It's a fabulous experience. I'd happily grab it again at some point for trophy hunting purposes.
Am I the only weird one who doesn't play a sequel if I haven't been able to play the first game 🤔
It's so odd that they're just not going to release the first game on playstation. Reminds me of Mass Effect 3 releasing on the wii u despite the previous two never coming to a Nintendo system.
@RicebinBernacky I don't think that's quite the same. Mass Effect 3 was deeply connected to the previous two games, especially if you transitioned your choices forward between games.
Also, if I recall correctly, the whole trilogy was being sold on PS3 for the same price as just the Wii U port.
It was raw deal all around.
This seems more like a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest situation where the different games are fully separate stories.
@Ralizah
You're right of course that the Mass Effect example was far worse. This almost feels weirder though, in that the first Octopath was ported to Xbox but not to PS
@Ralizah I'm perfectly okay with that tbh. Having to forge through endless long-winded conversations of team members commenting on every little thing they encounter together in RPGs is beyond exhausting at this point.
@RicebinBernacky We haven't heard any specific details on why the sequel is skipping Xbox, but if I had to guess, Microsoft offered S-E a good deal to port the original game and put it on Game Pass for a time, like they have with Yakuza, Dragon Quest, Persona, etc. Given they don't seem to be renewing that arrangement and the sequel is skipping the platform entirely, it seems like user engagement on GP was low enough that Microsoft wasn't willing to do another deal for the new game, and, of course, S-E had no incentive to port the sequel if the original did particularly poorly on that platform.
Despite how much I liked the Xbox 360, the thing is that, even if MS is interested in expanding the presence of Japanese games on its platform, the playerbase broadly isn't receptive (although Yakuza seems to have really taken off on that platform).
If Nintendo isn't paying for timed exclusivity, and if Microsoft's GP deal is no longer in the equation, then the way is open to test out the newest entry on Playstation, to see if the audience is receptive.
Getting tired of all the port, no port nonsense. I can understand timed exclusives but a game never coming to a specific platform when it most certainly should is upsetting. Especially odd when it's a sequel to a game no one on the platform can play. My days of owning every system are gone.
@Ralizah and that's a shame personally, I love me my tales of/xenoblade parties. But tbh, it doesn't necessarily even have to be on those levels. Just something simpler but still feel like a genuine team, would do. Like some of the older SE titles
I liked the first octopath, some of the boss battles went on forever though, and that's coming from someone who loves turn based games.
I doubt not playing the first will have any impact on the 2nd, it'll likely be more like final fantasy, a completely different set of characters and story.
@jorel262 100% agree. I’ve flirted with buying a switch for 3 years but I don’t want to be in two ecosystems.
The Front Mission remakes not coming to PS either is frustrating too.
Seems they haven’t improved on the awful voice acting in the first game. Luckily you can turn it off.
Otherwise looks great.
