We're yet to actually see anything of Marvel's Wolverine outside of that one tiny announcement teaser, but you can already feel the hype. This is, after all, going to be a PS5 exclusive from Insomniac Games — the Sony studio that's already given us Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales, and is currently working on Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which is due out later this year.
The potential for a proper Wolverine game is obviously massive, and now we've got Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb dropping some early details. The prevalent insider reckons that Marvel's Wolverine will be blessed with a Mature age rating, which should allow for things like graphic violence and other adult themes. This is something that many licensed games miss out on, instead targeting Teen or Everyone ratings to maximise appeal across all demographics.
Grubb also says that Insomniac is aiming for an Autumn / Fall release window in 2024, which would put Wolverine one year out from Spider-Man 2. However, he does note that things could slip into 2025. In other words, it's too early to say for sure.
And last but not least, Wolverine will supposedly feature semi-open environments, not too dissimilar from how God of War Ragnarok is designed. It doesn't sound like it'll be fully open world, like what you'll find in the aforementioned Spider-Man titles.
Would you want Wolverine to be a Mature-rated release? Can you already see Logan painting rooms red? Get your claws out in the comments section below.

Awesome news on the open world aspect. Way over done. If it’s even close to god of war style, it will be perfect.
Nice of Grubb to put insomniac under pressure by revealing a release window that they weren't ready to confirm, but which social media will take as absolute.
Also not open world? Thank goodness- not everything has to be. Great news if true
Sounds fantastic. And it's Insomniac, so it's basically guaranteed to be good.
"Won't be open world, apparently"
Hallejula!
Hell yeah lets goooo
To hell with those family friendly games. Thats why I love Playstation!
Not every game has to be open world.....
It would be dope if it has levels like uncharted 4
Spider-Man is a character that fits the open-world style of gameplay so well, Wolverine; not so much, so I'm happy if this is true. I trust Insomniac to create a great story with a great character so they can make it a dating sim for all I care, I'll buy it.
So glad to hear it’s not open world
If it’s even half as good as X-Men Origins: Wolverine (PS3) I’ll be happy.
Jeff “Take Everything He Says With A Pinch” Grubb
Highly doubt an open world will suit a Wolverine game anyways. Wolverine can't cover huge ground like Spiderman can so makes sense for it not being fully open world. Logan is by far the best Wolverine movie cause its more brutal with the deaths. Wolverine in any form of entertainment should never be PG
Hope it's rated M and super brutal
@Beerheadgamer82 He does have a motorbike, though... It would at least be fun to pop wheelies as Logan cracks a wry smile.
@ItsBriney
Dude, its from Insomniac Games
It will 10x better than everything wolverine related that came before (gaming wise)
IG are on par with SMS and ND.
Sounds great! Not everything needs to be open world and these days we have too many which causes a lot of burn out. A nice little linear game means I can re-play it many times.
Has Insomniac ever done an M-rated game? I can’t remember one. This will be a new direction for them
@ShogunRok that's a good point actually. His claws would still be lethal on a bike too, one handed
@Th3solution Sunset Overdrive
@Th3solution
All three Resistance games were rated Mature.
@OrtadragoonX @GamingFan4Lyf Haha! Oh, my bad. 😅 I forgot about those.
The output from Insomniac compared to Sonys others studios is a joke. They are carrying Sony rn.
I think 2024 was always on the cards since it's Wolverine's 50th anniversary so I imagine Sony have pencilled that year in to mark it.
But Microsoft said it was out this year & they never lie lol
I am 100% fine with less open world games, and more 20 - 30 hour structured ones.
@Beerheadgamer82 Haha, you can already picture the carnage, would be absolutely brutal.
@ShogunRok limbs be flying everywhere lol
So pleased it will not be open world. Makes this a must have for me. I'm on the fence over the next Spider-Man game. I bounced pretty hard off the last game I got so bored with the boring side quest. Loved the actual story campaign though
One thing that the game will have is regenerative healing. I'm sure that Insomniac will balence it so players don't abuse Logan's healing powers. It could have Logan's origins as Weapon X. He might have to face villains like Sabertooth.
@Ken_Kaniff Yeah, it's crazy considering they are about as big as Santa Monica, and way smaller than Naughty Dog. Wolverine will be their fourth PS5 game.
Sounds good, but 2024, potentially 2025 sounds very very far away. Anxious to hear what else we going to get from Sony this year, but don’t expect much. It’s very rare for them to announce a big Triple A title and release it the same year. But maybe we can get something akin to Sackboy Big Adventure 2?
I'm happy with that, to an extent. But I do reeeeeally want to be able to have a little bit of motorbike riding included in some way. Pulling up to a biker bar before murdering a holed up gang of kidnappers/traffickers and then riding off into the sunset is the kind of vibe I want from this game.
Also, mature is just obvious. Wolverine wants to be going up again the proper scum of the world, not lycra clad goofs
I’m absolutely fine with a linear game for the first. But they could’ve use his motorcycle as his mode of transportation around an open world. Would’ve been cool af IMO. I have complete faith this game will be a blast either way.
@Allfather Ratchet and Clank and Little Big Planet suddenly disappear from the face of the earth
@Th3solution resistance
Glad its not open world and a GoW style world sounds perfect for him.
Sounds good.! I agree on not Being open world is a big a plus.
I actually think their spiderman games are highly overrated when you consider all the basic repetitive open world padding put into the titles. It was on par with Ubisoft open world stuffing, Not in a good way. As it caused the overall gameplay to feel repetitive in itself because the fatigue begins to show repetitive aspects of basic combat, etc. Even Got and hfw could take notes from certain aspects of elden ring in terms of embracing exploration and honoring the world design. Just none of that garbage copy and paste dungeon drivel that elden ring lazily put in. Oh and maybe finish the back half of the game too
.. Lmfao. I digress..
This Is why we really need a foundational open world design shift. With more focused and meaningful side content in an overall slimmer package unless the size and length is justified rather than there as padding to extend the length.
I trust insomniac will make an awesome Wolverine title.
Insomniac is how you invest in a developer. Dollar for dollar (or pound for pound), that $229 million investment by Sony has been a goldmine. 2018 Insom released Spider-man, then got purchased by Sony in 2019. Since then, with a (hopefully) once in a lifetime pandemic, they’ve released Miles Morales, a Spider-man upgrade, A Rift Apart, and have Spider-man 2 coming this year and Wolverine next.
Money well spent.
Marvel wolverine from the first teaser trailer oviously is a rated m for mature.and its going to be a really good game and the graphics is going To look amazing.word up son
"Open World" screwed many games, especially Diablo 4. It is sooooooo refreshing someone is stepping outside that "openworldrpg" box!!! Now hope for camera gets back above head instead shoulder as perfect 3rd person games and we have solid base for perfect Wolverine game...
still remember perfect PS3 Wolverine game. No "originalities" just pure classic story and action.
PSVR2 mode, please!
Flailing arm workout simulator for the people.
man this is a breath of fresh air
@RatmCky hope you talking about the original god of wars
Damn I really hope all of this is true. M rating, Fall 2024 release window and not fully open world is exactly how I imagined this game to be.
It better bloody well be 'M' mature at least, or better yet 'Adult 18+'
'Everyone' or 'Teen' rated Wolverine isn't Wolverine, it's a Puss in Boots
People complain about open world, which has lately been a crutch for mediocre games. But the bigger issue is single player games as a whole have been mostly formulaic. I really want this game to be good. And I trust that it will be.
I’m pretty sure that Insomniac games won’t disappoint us the Spider man games have been incredible and absolutely amazing. Hoping they’ll do a fantastic of Wolverine
