Polyphony Digital may be plotting an extraordinary free PSVR2 patch for Gran Turismo 7 this month, but work is already underway on the next instalment in the legendary series. That’s according to creator Kazunori Yamauchi, who admitted as much in a Japanese interview, but laughed that he’s not allowed to talk about it yet.
“Actually, we do have a theme,” Yamauchi said, when asked by Game Watch whether he’d achieved all he wanted to with Gran Turismo 7. “We are starting to work on the next one, but I can't talk about it yet. It's a shame that I can't talk about it very much.”
It’s probably safe to assume that the next game in the series will be developed specifically for PS5, as Gran Turismo 7 infamously released on both Sony’s new-gen console and the PS4. Historically, there have been two Gran Turismo titles per console generation, so we could certainly see a hypothetical Gran Turismo 8 launching in 2025 or 2026. We doubt we’ll be hearing about it in an official capacity for some time, though.

Hopefully the first good one in the series! One that doesn't feel so sterile and empty
@Grimwood That sure is a take! The series has been consistently excellent, and the latest is one of the best ones.
Sounds like you're just not interested in Gran Turismo period.
this is surprising news to be honest since i had the impression that gt7 would be a live service game to be supported for the next... i dunno, 7 years? do they have plans to make another numbered entry on the ps5? i don't really see that as necessary unless they divert from the current design philosophy entirely.
GT is great but I do wish Polyphony made an arcade racer, something like Driveclub/ Motorstorm. Sigh... I miss Evolution.
@get2sammyb it still hasn't been explained how on earth GT7 didn't make push square's game of the year top 10 despite the great review score?
GT 7 had great core gameplay but some of the business were off putting and not being able to play the game offline is a major disappointment. Hopefully GT 8 remedies that.
A mid-generation entry in the series - now the generation has finally begun - has real potential. Exciting.
@MatthewJP Well it was voted on by multiple staff (and the community)! If I remember correctly, it just missed out.
Not having to worry about working on 2 gens should not only let the graphics be boosted even more but hopefully extend to helping with better AI (not that their AI racers has ever been great.)
Gran Tourismo: Horizon maybe?
Hopefully back to more of the old ways, with a lot more "real cars" that you can buy and upgrade, and fewer supercars. What I'd love is something more along the lines of GT3 or 4 with today's graphics and gameplay, and a huge roster of cars that most people actually see on the road IRL.
just do gt4 with modern cars.
gt4 did single player right
huh,
so they really did not care to make a propper carreer mode to GT7.
Welp there's always next time, I'll just think of GT7 as GT Sport 2 now.
who am I kidding? the next GT will probably be nothing but scapes lol
@Porco We've always had two mainline GT games on each console so it's no different really.
@Grimwood Says the person who believes Hooters Road Trip is best driving gam ever and BMX XXX the best cycling game ever.
@jimbouk Motorstorm in the modern landscape would do so well. I think everyone loves apocalypse / destruction / evolving tracks.
I was even thinking earlier today what if Destruction All-Stars was more like Motorstorm than Rocket League. Imagine how well that would do
@Porco It's probably a PS6 launch window game.
@unlucky13, exactly what I was going to say. Six months of single player content (that’s how long it took me to complete GT3 back in the day, I had a callus on my thumb!). Not two weeks of single player content, then updates you can finish in one session
The just race race race thing isn't enough. If they wanna shake things up and beat the Horizons, NFS, and the upcoming The Crew, maybe they should take notes from GTAO. Imagine GTA's world with GT cars but without the guns...Where you can just take your sweet ride for a spin, see other online players ride around or meet up in clubs, maybe manage a business with AI or friends, stunting events, make some actual damage to cars, it's not all about courses upon courses upon courses.
Great news. Would be strange if they hadn’t started development on the new instalment. I doubt two titles per console is a given at this point and I’m curious where they think they can improve. Ray tracing in race won’t be enough. I just hope they’ll keep supporting GT7 for at least a few more years and they stay miles away from the Horizon/crew/open world format.
@TheArt yeah just no to all that
@stvevan Totally agree, no more open world racing games, they ruined Burnout with that.
@stvevan Yeah and it won't make top 10 on any list in that state, not even on our dear old Push"Square."
And it'll still have the same cars as GT6.
I don't like sim games but I'd really like some arcade racers. Miss Driveclub, that was awesome! Maybe Sony should get a studio to make their own GT Horizon or open world Driveclub.
@Grimwood
@TrickyDicky99
Ya know, I actually agree with you both moderately. The first two games were groudbreaking for their time, but the series as a whole has become EXTREMELY dated in terms of systems, and visuals. Especially when you look at their physics engine. In my opinion it absolutely unacceptable to have a modern racing game like GT7 have the physics it does (or doesn't), and complete lack of even a minor damage system. It is very noticeable how artificial just those things alone make the driving, when you bounce off walls and cars like an 80s/90s arcade racing game.
I still maintain to this day that GT7 was my most regretted game purchase in recent memory aside from the godawful tales of arise.
I am by no means saying GT7 is bad, it's just dated and i honestly don't notice a massive difference in driving between any of the titles aside from the modest visual improvements over the entire span of the games. PlayStation as platform deserves a much better franchise racing sim, especially when you consider that development cycles of these iterative GT titles.
@NoFaceBigFoot but BMX xxx is the best cycling game ever... jk it's downhill domination
Good, least it won't be held back by PS4.
It has to lunch on PS4 and hold back PS5 please 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@Grimwood believe I had this impression as well after I tried out GT3 on the PS2 years ago… it all changed with GT7. The game still has some flaws but nevertheless it’s a beautiful one and onesie the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.
@Luigia haha no. Cross gen finally will end in 2023.
@theMEGAniggle i loved MotorStorm, still talk about that game all the time on here. I would buy that day one on PS5. Plus with the dual sense features, feeling the turbos about to blow up your car. Man that would be the racing game to get. At the moment i am a Forza Horizon 5 guy on Series X, but would leave it quicker than a prom date if MotorStorm came out on PS5.
@Unlucky13 yeeesssssss…. GT3 was my lifeblood back then.
@Reeneman I hope so but Sony don’t believe in generations 😀
Hard to believe only gt sport was available in the ps4 era, I’m mainly a sim racer so this is super exciting but it’s going to take a while to come to fruition. It’ll give me plenty of time to plat gt sport after getting 2 plats on gt7
I wish they’d actually focused on finishing the current game before starting the new one.
The campaign still feels half baked & incomplete, FFB is bland, still hardly any events once you’ve completed the campaign & there’s a distinct lack of cars from the last 5 years. Not to mention the crap economy, state of engine swaps & split screen bugs
I guess they do need to look at building a game for the current gen consoles (or next) from the ground up if they want to compete with the new Forza….which Im looking forward to as well
I could give a damn about it looking any more realistic than 7. It better fix the imbalance of credit earning ability vs car cost, allow for buying engine swaps instead of having to pray for the in roulette tickets (and expand the pool of engines/cars for swapping), and allow for my friends and I to use cars from my garage in split screen, and oh yeah, make split screen actually playable for that matter.
This vague statement and the “theme” leads me to think it could be the GT version of “horizon” - they’d already said they’d support 7 for years. So I’d imagine this new one is to go along side.
An open world racer would be most welcome and hope a little less sterile.
GT7 was actually far less sterile than people make out but it was very “clean”
I love the GT series
Motor sport should be oily and rough around the edges.
Hopefully it will have a similar variety of cars to GT2
I get where the folks who want more realistic damage come from but I suppose it shouldn't be a factor. In a good race you wouldn't hit anything that could cause damage. I struggle enough with placing third in some races without out being penalised for a single heavy-contact!
Implementing damage modelling in both physical car damage and car handling, for all cars, would take CPU and GPU cycles away from something else. So I guess it was a conscious design decision at some point.
As for Motorstorm, yes please, instant purchase.
I wonder if it will be like a Prologue for 8? Like they did with 5. Then launch of PS6 we will have Gran Turismo 8.
It sounds PS5Pro will come along…
@Green-Bandit honestly they need to make it fast. I'm hoping that new twisted metal game will have some elements of Motorstorm in it but that's a dream
@theMEGAniggle i hope so. Those are fantastic games. I mean i have an Xbox Series X and i love me some Horizon 5. Great great game. But again MotorStorm to me on PS5 would have me more interested and the Dual Sense would bring it to life in ways the Xbox Controller can not. I am not a big enough racing fan to need 3-4 titles, so for me it would be Motorstorm first. Probably a pipe dream, but i am 80% sure we are getting a twisted Metal game to go alongside the show.
@Green-Bandit yeah Motorstorm for me is just wayyyyyy more fun that anything Horizon has to offer. I was a fan of 3 & 4 but the most recent one was just okay.
But lets hope Firesprite (which iirc has/had former members of Evolution Studios and Liverpool Studio) can one day bring Motorstorm back
@theMEGAniggle i would love that. Day one for me buddy. That would be a big title to have back on PS.
