Dead Island 2 has rapidly and somewhat unexpectedly become one of the more intriguing titles on the gaming horizon for us, thanks to positive preview impressions and that banger of a gameplay showcase from a couple of weeks back. It sounds like it will be a somewhat meaty offering for us to sink our teeth into, which is a good thing, too, considering it has been in development for almost a decade.
In an interview with WCCFTech, Dambuster Studios' art director Adam Olsson reveals how long a playthrough of Dead Island 2 is likely to take, noting that "I think we do have guidance stating that if you take part in some secondary missions and other activities, the whole experience is around 20 hours. That's what we have."
Olsson goes on to mention that number doesn't include fooling around with cooperative multiplayer or searching for collectables, not to mention playing as a different character entirely. The entire piece is a great read if you are interested in Dead Island 2's satirical setting of HELL-A or the gruesome Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids (FLESH) system of procedural dismemberment.
Are you looking forward to Dead Island 2? Can you believe it is finally coming to PS5 and PS4 on 21st April? Patiently wait a little while longer in the comments section below.

20 hours? wasn't the original dead island much longer than that including side quests?
@huyi 20 hours for one playthrough as a single character, and it's just the story length with a "few" side quests/activities.
I suspect if you want to do everything it's closer to 20-25 hours per playthrough.
What’s the sub-heading suggesting?
Tbh I lost interest in this game years ago. But 20 hrs seems fine. 10 hrs of the first was more than enough.
@Vacuumator its suggesting that it's been in development for ten years. To be fair it was announced 10 years ago but this is like the 4th version of the game developed by 3 different studios in that time.
20hours is more than enough for a standard run. Not every game needs to be 70-100 hours for me.
@veryhoudini11 Yes, that was all, being facetious
The original was honestly too long, it kept dragging on. I think 20 hours is a good thing.
@Woder
20 hours sounds perfect to me. To those who are time-poor, 100-hour open world epics aren’t always a realistic undertaking. More linear games are far more favourable.
On average it took 18 hours and 36 minutes to complete the main story of the first Dead Island, plus an additional 10 hours if you included Side Missions & Collectibles. So the way I'm reading this is that Dead Island 2 will be relatively the same length as the first Dead Island, I'm cool with that either way, I already know I'm going to devote a lot of time to this game, hell I spent so many hours in the first game just looting them backpacks outside the Resort Hotel.
@Vacuumator the game was originally announced as a ps3/ps4 multiplatform release in 2013 set to release in 2014. It has been delayed several times, has restarted development under new development times several times and has since been canceled for ps3 to become a gen 8 only title, announced to be on ps4 and ps5, and then cancelled on ps4 to be a gen 9 only title.
I pre-ordered the game straight after the most recent gameplay reveal. That was enough to assuage any concerns I had; it looked superb, maybe even an improvement on the originals...
pcgamer’s latest preview wasn’t great, this could be a huge dud. Doesn’t sound like there’s much there in terms of gameplay.
That's perfect, not too long and not too short either.
@Dloki these 50-100 hours of bloat games are this autistic mfs bread n butter..
Hence AC: Valhalla that I paid $40 this past Saturday for that is now $20 😡
Either way I’m loving it.. just wish the season pass would get knocked down to $20
As long it has new game plus I'm all in. For what it's worth the developer is also being unusually transparent, which to me says they're confident and quite happy with the product. Replayability is not just contingent on how massive the game is. AC Valhalla was said to have high replayability but the most replayability it had for me was the time spent uninstalling and reinstalling to check out new updates and then cycling again.
@WolfyTn Never buy a base Ubisoft game. Always gotta buy Gold or Ultimate editions. And only when they're $20, which they all hit at some point (usually within 2 years of release).
That's just how it is with Ubisoft games.
@MFTWrecks I just looked at the season pass out of curiosity and it’s on sale now too! F*** yeah.. I’m going to Ireland baby!
The only thing that concerns me is the card system I hated it in B4B. Also in case I missed it has anyone seen what the multiplayer aspect of this is like?
@huyi no the original dead island was Around 18 hours
@huyi the original dead island wasn't longer dead island 2 is 20 hours For the main Story about Side missions and Activities I'm not sure but it's definitely much longer then the original dead island
@RemembersGems lol 😂 only 20 hours tho is that long enough tho I mean dying light 2 was 24 hours so All together for dead island 2 it will be 24 hours in general that's kind of dumb when we all had to wait 9 years for this game and they only give us 20 hours wow
@Fiendish-Beaver it's only 20 hours lol 😂 then the game is finished your telling me that's enough even tho everyone had to wait 9 years and that's all they give us is 20 hours 💀
@pharos_haven nope but I do know dead island 2 will flop only 20 hours that sucks
Dead island 2 is only 20 hours plus no day or night Cycle and people have to pay over £55 to £75 for it when we all had to wait 9 years and that's all we get is only 20 hours oh hell nah
@DeathlySW it's only 20 hours so your happy with that when we all had to wait 9 years for this game and they only give us 20 hours that's not a true Zombie game lol 😂
Dying light 2 flopped dead island 2 will flop too
@Fiendish-Beaver why it's only 20 hours lol 😂 it's not even worth £55 for 20 hours it's worth least about £25
@NinjaNicky
That's one way to belittle everyone who prefers longer experiences and getting what they pay for. 😅
@Dannyboy44 I didn’t spend any money on this game during development, I’m only spending on it once reviews come out because I just don’t trust devs will ever release a game without issues again.
But I think 20 hours is fine, especially if it has new game plus. Games are expensive now more than ever, can’t fight that. Some folks like games that are endless, others like brief jaunts. The original dead island with side quests saw me beat it in 13 hours. So who knows?
I think it depends on how you play a game, @Dannyboy44, and how many runs you do. I know, for example, that I will do everything in the game, which immediately ups the hours, as they say 'some' side missions equals 20 hours. However, I will do at least two runs because I will play it solo, and then with a friend. We will do everything as well, so if everything equates to 25 hours in a single run, then doing so twice brings that up to a minimum of 50 hours, though I imagine it will be much more. Plus, if I enjoy the game, I may well go through it with other characters. There are six different characters to choose from, and if they do what happened in the earlier games, then there will be trophies linked to each individual character, meaning multiple runs will be needed. Therefore, just me playing solo, could mean well over 100 hours of playtime, which seems good value to me.
You mention Dying Light 2 as having failed. I thoroughly enjoyed the game. The time is takes to beat was shown as 24 hours, but for 100% completion they suggested it would take 96.5 hours. I spent 144 hours and 32 minutes playing the game, so considerably more than the 24 hours, or even the 96.5 hours, and I only did one run through of the game.
I know its a different genre, but I spent 1100 hours on a single run of Fallout New Vegas, and even more than that on Skyrim. If you Google how long it takes to beat Fallout New Vegas, they reckon around 27.5 hours, and Skyrim comes in at just 34 hours. Now, I accept that there is probably much more to do in these two games, but my point is, some people, such as myself, will eek out an awful lot more time in a game than others. Unless, of course, you don't think Fallout New Vegas or Skyrim were worth their asking price either?
Looking at all your different comments, it would seem that you actually would wish to see the game fail. You appear to be particularly cynical about the game. A game that you have not played, nor has been reviewed as yet. You may well be right, the game may fall entirely flat, but then again, even so, some might derive great pleasure in playing it.
@DeathlySW Yh but we all had too wait 9 years for this game and it's only 20 hours just find that ridiculous for the price too it's definitely not worth £55 to £75
@Fiendish-Beaver I understand what your saying I'm not saying your not but we all had to wait 9 years to play dead island 2 and we all find out now it will only be 20 hours for the main story should of bean least 30 to 35 hours max and side missions and Activities over 100 hours but very disappointed in my opinion but I will still get it because Dead island games are Amazing and I'm a big fan of them games the original dying light will Always be better then dying light 2 in every way I just found dying light 2 really disappointed
I get what you're saying, @Dannyboy44. 9 years is a long time to be waiting. We can only hope that it is a decent game and worth the price we each pay...
@Dannyboy44 I think the price hike was definitely not acceptable by anyone’s standards. When they priced it at 59 CAD and cancelled preorders before hiking it to 79 it did leave a sour taste. Again, I’ll wait for reviews from Skillup, Digital Foundry etc before buying. But I am still hopeful, and from what they’ve shared it seems quite good.
I am willing to give this a chance again, I gave up on the first one because it got boring.
