Update: And just like that, SEGA has purchased Rovio, the mobile developer behind Angry Birds. The final bid is slightly less than had originally been reported: $775 million. Considering the Finnish firm’s turnover totals about $300 million a year, this deal looks like a snip for the Sonic the Hedgehog publisher.
As we’re all intimately familiar with by now, these acquisitions take a little time to clear, and SEGA’s not expecting the deal to be officially finalised until around the end of September. Unlike certain other takeovers in the industry, however, this one is unlikely to be under too much scrutiny.
It sounds like the Japanese company wants to use Rovio’s expertise to help expand its footprint in the smartphone space: “Through the acquisition, the company aims to take-in Rovio's live-operated mobile game development capabilities and expertise in mobile game operation, to accelerate the development of mobile-compatible and multi-platform-supported version of SEGA’s existing game IPs, thereby strengthening and further accelerating global expansion of SEGA’s game portfolio.”
Obviously this is similar language to what Sony used when it purchased Bungie, so this seems to be a common theme among major publishers right now.
Original Article: Forget about the Angry Birds, as there could be a few Angry Hedgehogs on the horizon – or something. According to the Wall Street Journal, publishing giant and former platform holder SEGA is on the brink of acquiring Angry Birds maker Rovio for $1 billion. The era of industry consolidation continues…
According to “people familiar with the matter”, the Sonic the Hedgehog maker could seal the deal as early as next week, assuming talks don’t collapse between now and then. Obviously the deal will then be subject to approval, but shouldn’t face too much scrutiny.
It’s worth noting that SEGA itself merged with slot-machine company Sammy in 2004, and produces all kinds of amusement products, including arcade games and more. Bringing the Angry Birds brand in-house, which is still popular among certain demographics, does make some sense, then.
Rovio, based in Finland, played a pivotal role in the smartphone gaming boom back in 2009 – but since going public in 2017, hasn’t really been able to find the same kind of success. Angry Birds spawned a couple of movies and a number of spin-offs, but isn’t the titan it once was.
Earlier in the year, the mobile developer was in talks with Israeli publisher Playtika to sell for $800 million, but that deal collapsed. It sounds like SEGA has swooped in with an improved offer, although we’ll still need to wait for the ink to dry next week.

Hasn't angry birds greatly declined? Sounds like SEGA is making a mistake.
Angry Birds operating the catapults in a new Sonic Spinball title (at 60fps of course)
So as opposed to releasing a collection of their arcade hits, or some new entries in their beloved franchises, they're going for some has-been mobile game developer?
I guess the part of this story that is the most surprising to me is that Sega has $1b in capital for acquisitions. They always feel like they're a couple of flops away from bankruptcy to me. I know Like a Dragon is a hit for them, but it's not a behemoth. Sonic is Sonic. I imagine their PC centric teams are better off then I think.
@RudeAnimat0r It cannot be understated how much additional cash flow they have from licensing Sonic for merchandise and the movie.
Sonic is VERY big amongst the movie's younger audiences. VERY big.
Unless Angry Birds popularity is soaring again, I don’t see how this is a good deal lol…. $1 Billion Dollar Deal for a game that isn’t even popular anymore?
Unless they make some kind of amazing AAA Angry Birds game… they’ll be losing many instead of gain… and even then I don’t even think THAT would make them over $1B
@MFTWrecks Fair. I don't really think about Sonic outside of the games.
The consolidation war continues in the gaming industry don’t be surprised when you hear Sony bought square enix later this year.
@MFTWrecks it is big among older people too. My daughter's are 24 and 27 they love the movies.
@MFTWrecks must only be in america then because where else is sonic that popular
@RudeAnimat0r right ? that’s shocking that sega has 1B , i thought they were on their last legs just going by the budget and quality of their sonic games for like the past 10 years
Angry Birds isn't even relevant anymore. I fear we're seeing old Sega bad decisions coming back.
@danzoEX It's probably the talent they're after, IP second.
@nomither6 @RudeAnimat0r Even more surprising is sega is still alive because According to people on the internet Sony Killed Sega.
Strange choice. Angry Birds is kind of out of style these days. Maybe Sega thinks they can revive it somehow? I don't know I don't see it.
$1Billion to splurge??? Where the f**k was that money when I wanted my Dreamcast to continue being a viable current console???
This country.
I thought Rovio had been bought out by a large publisher already but I think I might be getting mixed up with Candy Crush/Activision. Nice that SEGA are in a position to buy. Ten years ago we all would have said SEGA were struggling. Thanks Yakuza Zero!
@Nem that's why buying it is a better idea so Rovio can get shaken up to the core
@nomither6 I don't know what to tell you. The movies both grossed more from international markets than US domestic.
There is a popular kids Netflix show.
The toys are all over Walmart and Target and other stores.
And I saw more Sonic costumes trick 'r treating this past year than any other year of my life and I grew up playing the games.
In the US? Yes. But also... does it matter where the $ comes from? Sega still makes hand over fist from all of it. THAT'S my point.
1 Billion for the IP? A dead IP!? 1 Billion for the talent? What talent they never been able to make anything else!? Seems Sega is trying to speedrun it's self into bankruptcy 🤷
Sega certainly is "away with the birds" so to speak. What id give for them to make a AM2/3 compilation of arcade classics.
Angry Birds 2 is currently the 74th most popular game on the Play store. The game doesn't seem dead, but still, a billion for Rovio seems pretty steep, all things considered. Maybe SEGA has plans for Rovio to use SEGA IP to make new games, since Rovio really doesn't have anything except Angry Birds. Seems to maybe benefit both if it actually works out.
@Uncharted2007 I just checked, and Rovios “Red’s First Flight” (basically Angry Birds 1 classic no adds paid version) is #9 top selling game on iOS.
The current F2P Angry Birds 2 is ranking #66 on the free charts. Those two are significant rankings.
Yakuza arcades will now have another game to play yay
The big thing I noted about this is that this makes it feel less likely for Sega to be one of the major 3rd party publishers that could be acquired. I know they along with Square and Capcom have been the Japanese publishers most rumored to be bought out, so this puts to rest at least one concern of mine of like Sony or MSoft or Nintendo buying another big publisher.
@BusyOlf for what it’s worth, Zynga, another large mobile game maker, was acquired by Take Two within early last year for $12.7 billion.
@Deoxyr1bose I would not say that. If anything, they are looking a lot more appealing to Xbox after this, since they really want to get into mobile gaming.
Hell, ABK was doing acquisitions even after they signed the deal to be acquired themselves.
@Tharsman was just going to post that I expect this to go on whatever new store MS uses for King.
Oddly tho by snapping up a big title it makes it harder for MS to acquire them. So I’d think there will be some good partnership deals here.
Interesting bit, I just went to check Sega Sammy Holdings current cash on hand, as of 3/31/22 they had exactly $1.24 billion, and it seems their cash in hand has been going down every year (likely a good thing unless you saving to make a big move, no investor likes too much cash on hand.)
Hard to guess how much that pool had fluctuated in the last year, but very curious to see their update for the 2023 calendar.
Oh and their market cap is $4.54 Billion right now, this acquisition represents 22% of their market cap. Does not imply they will grow by 22%, but it’s not out of the question either.
Don't do it , SEGA!
Save them from themselves, Sega!
Notice all the big buy outs mostly have a theme to them, gain mobile users and IP’s, people on here think MS is after COD and Blizzard games but the reality is they already had those games, what MS doesn’t have is Candy Crush that makes boat loads of cash daily. This is smart for Sega and any company to invest in as mobile gaming destroy’s console gaming in money spent and dollars in pocket. Now i am not sure angry birds is still that game anymore, but i am sure the brand is still doing really well and probably better than 75% or more of Sega’s console and PC offerings. Sony say’s they have 5 Billion left to spend, kinda surprised they didn’t come out with this. Unless they don’t see it a good fit. MS on the other hand claims they still have 50 Billion plus left to spend, so who know’s who they go after next after the ABK deal, but my guess is it will once again have mobile in mind. Nintendo seems fine without mobile as they have a market basically to themselves and don’t spend this type of cash normally. So not sure i see them anytime soon dipping into buying up mobile focused IP’s and studios.
@Green-Bandit that 5 billion is cash on hand for acquisitions sony can add more money to that 5 billion if necessary.
@RudeAnimat0r They do have Persona. But their parent Sega Sammy Holdings is in the Pachislot and Pachinko machine business, owns multiple Resorts, owns a Music Publishing Label, owns multiple Films and animation studios... etc. Sega ain't broke. LOL
Sega is up to no good. This time for themselves smh
@4kgk2 for sure, i wouldn’t see why not anyhow, they have to have profits laying around that if a deal came up and they really wanted to go for it they should be able to come up with more cash. I mean i can’t imagine to many more $7-20 billion dollar studios would even be up for sale, but you never know. I don’t see Sony being able to spend 20 plus billion but i think they could get more like you said.
@Green-Bandit I can see Sony buying square enix and deviation games.
@RudeAnimat0r I'd say the biggest surprise of this story for me is that Angry Birds has spawned two movies!
Okay but why? What else do they have besides angry birds? Do they own some great licenses or something?
@4kgk2 i am 50/50 on them buying Square Enix, like if it happened i wouldn’t be surprised, but if it didn’t happen and they continue to get the games and square’s new leadership talked about getting their games on more devices than i could see that as well. Not sure how that plays out.One thing i am sure of is cause both Sony and MS said it as much, they aren’t done yet. So one of them or both will make some more moves in 2023 or early 2024. I am a huge PS and Xbox fan, so i am happy to see them both going after talent and building up their offerings. I think Sony would be smart to try and get a WRPG company as those are popular games and Xbox took a lot of them already. Not sure if much is left for Sony, but that’s an area i think they could use to strengthen.
That's a mistake, people rarely play angry bird anymore, why spend 1B to buy rovio? It's a waste of money that sega can spend on either making games or buy other studio.
@JayJ Like Green bandit said notice the theme here. Sega buys rovio. Take two buys Zynga. Ubisoft was the same company as Gameloft, yves guillemots brother ran it but I think it was sold to tencent or netease. Nintendo buys DeNA. Activision buys King.. Then Microsoft pays obscene money to buy Activision mainly to get King from it. The whole industry consolidation thing seems to be entirely about traditional gaming companies taking over mobile.
Another reason to not believe Sony would want square. They're not a mobile powerhouse which is where any money is best spent to keep up. Mobile is what's driving the acquisition freight train.
@SplooshDmg angry birds arcade machines are a thing and Sega still makes arcade machines. There's at least some value and synergy there.
@Green-Bandit Nintendo was the FIRST big gaming company to acquire a mobile entity in buying DeNA. Everyone else is catching up!
@MFTWrecks child me feels very vindicated by this....
@NEStalgia True, i just don’t see Nintendo being as active as MS & Sony going after large mobile publishers. But the Theme is set money for mobile cause mobile is money. Mobile crushes everything in cash and it’s the biggest reason ABK is such an important get for MS, it will help them launch a mobile store. Sony is normally behind in trends and even they are saying we can’t ignore mobile and are heading there. The evidence is there, these large buy outs are mainly for the mobile portion of the studio. Cloud and mobile is the future of 7 out of 10 gamers and i know that rattles cages on these chat forums, but its the truth, not saying thats where i or we will want to game on. But it’s here to stay and growing by the day if not the hour.
So how long until i'm playing Angry Birds in a Like A Dragon game where Kiryu or Ichiban get hooked on it?
I want whatever Sega is smoking
@Green-Bandit it says it all when Apple makes more in gaming than Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo combined and the don't even make any games.
Though I still think the gaming industry trying to make one giant gaming industry is a mistake. They're failing to recognize that different market segments are very different, and while mobile may be the biggest by revenue it just remains a wholly different market than the small console market.
@Sakisa omg I didn't even think of that. It's not just going to be an arcade game. It's going to be a collectable through the whole game, Ichi will be obsessed, and it will be rule 34'd.
Making birds with Majima and Kiryu's faces is probably the only way you can get me to play Angry Birds again.
@NEStalgia Theres gotta be something there. Angry Birds still seems to make pretty good money, but I think the current consolidation frenzy has surely left a lot of companies more confident that they can ask pretty hefty prices for a sale. Bungie being maybe the best case example here. Sony paid 3.5bn for a company with one game, and that company might only make between $200-300k per year, but as we know there were other ambitions wrapped up in that. So SEGA might not be getting such a bad deal if it would actually help them build a stronger position in mobile heavy Asia just by handing Rovio the keys to the SEGA IPs. Whether we just love mobile games or not, it's hard to deny how important that market is now for any Japanese game company.
Besides being shocked that Sega is buying anything in 2023, much less for $1B w/ a B dollars, it kind of makes sense, consolidation is the way right now. And maybe behind the scenes someone is giving Sega some $ to keep Tencent or PIF from buying them.🤷🏻♂️
And for all the people saying “Why spend $1B just on Angry Birds?” I don’t think they’re buying just the IP I think they’re buying the entire company Rovio, in Finland. Maybe they want a place to vacation in the summer? Rovio has been there 20 years now, they probably acquired a few things when Angry Birds was rolling in cash. 🤷🏻♂️
@NEStalgia You wrote all that and didn’t mention MS spending $2.5B on 1 trick pony Mojang? Sure, Minecraft is bigger than Angry Birds, but Rovio is a bigger company (500 employees) than Mojang was at the time (about 40 employees) and $1B now seems better than $2.5B a decade ago. Not saying either is a slam dunk, just surprised no one has mentioned $2.5B for Minecraft yet.🤑
I think this might be a great thing. This franchise has been struggling for years but is slowly getting better, i can see SEGA helping Rovio to make even better games unless they don’t rush on their games like they did with Sonic Team. Angry Birds was one of my biggest childhood games and seeing it being owned by the same company as Sonic is kind of mind blowing
Is Angry Birds worth that much now? Imo that money would be better spend on Sega's internal devs.
I hope Phil Spencer notified the authorities about this acquisition. Oh wait he's not Jim Ryan.
They are not just buying the IP, but the entire dev company. Even so, I think $1B is too much for what they are worth now.
Of all the things they spend a Billion on it had to be this.
@NEStalgia Agreed Nes, but the money they see on spreadsheets tells them to do different. Consoles are alive and well tho, and while they will never have the install base of mobile phones and tablets, they are still lucrative business and here to stay for a while.
Gearing themselves up for Microsoft's pocket
@Green-Bandit "businessmen" often make the mistake of misreading spreadsheets based on their own limited understanding of a market. They see "gaming revenue" group it all together, and conclude the market moved to mobile. It doesn't cross their minds that is two totally different markets with little in common, not a single big market. Mobile is bigger than console in the same way compact cars are a much bigger market than semi tractors. Doesn't mean the compact car market involves Peterbilt in any way, but the average MBA sees the spreadsheet for motor vehicles and plans around the obvious trend
@NEStalgia you got that right. Most of them don’t know Mario from the Easter Bunny, but they sure want all those dollars flowing into their accounts.
@rjejr only because that's very old news, old enough to be totally separate from the current consolidation trend. Minecraft makes a ton more money than the birds these days though. II'm just surprised rovio is worth that much really. Meanwhile all of square West was what 300m?
Imagine the problems we could solve with $1b? Other than taking out some green pigs...
i think this means my paltry sega stock is finally going to climb. good times.
@NEStalgia "very old news"
It was only 9 years ago, not even a decade, I've been commenting on here nearly twice as long as that. 😝
I mean come on really, what's a billion dollars these days? 🤷♂️ We have SCOTUS judges collecting that much money from companies that don't even exist. 🤑
@rjejr 9 years in gaming terms is very old that's a generation almost 2! We were still waiting for PS4 rest mode to be delivered. We still thought knack deserved a sequel. We still thought ff7r was going to have an ending. We still thought deep down was coming soon. That was a long long time ago
Angry Birds is not as popular anymore, but still pretty shocking to read.
@rjejr yes, but in all fairness, SCOTUS judges are above the law, because reasons.
Whilst I don't have the spread sheets in front of me, this looks like a lot of money for this IP.
It certainly shows that Sega is chasing the mobile market hard, which might please investors, but I suspect it means less reliance on releasing on console formats, and that's where I wish to consume their output.
Its shame, but that's where the market is
Yeah Sony probably buying square enix. if a very small company like Sega can spend almost a billion on angry birds which isn’t that popular anymore sony can spend 7 billion on square enix.
With MS purchasing 'King', Sony Purchasing Savage Games and setting up a PS Studios Mobile Division and Sega buying a Mobile creator, it would seem that EVERY company is targeting Mobiles in some capacity - maybe its because it actually makes more Money than console/premium games and has much more potential reach too as everyone these days owns a 'mobile'...
Actually seems like a bargain. Angry Birds isn't as popular today as it was ten or twelve years ago but its still a popular franchise. The spin-offs didn't took off but movies were a moderate success,
I respect Rovio for supporting at their prime all mobile platforms, even WIndows Phone/Mobile
@Titntin
I don't think we need to worry about publishers pushing in to mobile. Consoles will be around for as long we want them.
If people buy them the companies will make them.
Personally I have no interest in mobile games but diversification is important, especially in an industry where income from third parties can be cut off by an acquisition.
If Sony for example were to do a good enough job in mobile and MMOs they wouldn't have to worry about what happens with the likes of CoD.
(Well, wouldn't have to worry as much).
TLDR: You'll be enjoying Sega games on consoles for a long time yet 😌
Hopefully this has cost them so much money that they can't afford to keep making Sonic games.
Isn't half the worth of Activision Blizzard due to their mobile division?
I'm not as "WTF" as most, as mobile games make bank these days
@RudeAnimat0r It could be funded by debt. However, Sega's quarterly revenues were $2.1bn, and about 292m profit, with 17% growth so bankruptcy doesnt look imminent. As has been said there is a great amount of brand equity in Sonic and other video game properties going back to arcade and 16-bit era. The purchase of Rovio probably fits with doing more mobile branded casual games. Rovio has the mobile platform know-how but been unable to expand beyond its Angry Birds brand. You can see the synergy.
Angry Birds hasn't been relevant in years what the F were they thinking???
@liathach I mean I was being a bit dramatic with the bankruptcy comment. I'm sure they had a great last quarter, they noted Sonic Frontiers exceeded their own internal estimates.
Licensing definitely isn't something I thought about initially and clearly must be huge for them. However, there is some passion for their 16-bit and arcade roots, but I feel like that is mostly containing to a vocal minority - and not something I can actually see them making much money off of. Case in point they let someone else make Streets of Rage 4 and probably are kicking themselves over it (unless the licensing deal was very IP owner centric).
I can see the point of acquiring Rovio. Sega has a lot of IP I'm sure they would love to monetize on mobile.
Sega is working in my two most hated industries gambling and mobile gaming. 🤪
Think people need a clarification that SEGA is buying Rovio and not just Angry Birds specifically.
@zupertramp Exactly - its like Sony buying Savage Games and setting up Sony's Playstation Mobile Division. Its about buying the 'talent' behind Angry Birds and their expertise in the Mobile sector.
It 'works' for BOTH sides as Rovio want to try and bring 'games' to other Platforms and SEGA wants to get into the Mobile sector so it benefits 'both'.
It's possible they could do 'cross-overs' - a Mario Kart style game or even a Movie with Sonic, Angry Birds etc. Both Sonic and Angry Birds have animated movies and therefore a cross-over could 'work'.
SEGA is so SUSPECT
Insomniac best deal in gaming still.
As long as I get that Persona 5 mobile game, I don't care what else happens.
Hey Jim, someone is buying another studio that isn't you. You might want to call the FTC.
@NEStalgia Does Sega now only paying $775mil, a 1/4 discount, make the Mojang purchase any more recent/relevant? Probably not.🤷🏻♂️
@naruball B/c SCOTUS judges be like
But somehow also this
And this
I'm just having a good time thinking back when everyone was like "mobile will destroy traditional gaming" and now sega buys up one of the biggest mobile studios (or hasbeens).
@RudeAnimat0r Surprised me, too. I was also surprised that the developer still existed. I was thinking, recently, I don't see a lot of people playing games on phones. Not like, five...ten years ago.
RIP Angry Birds franchise.
Now Rovio is going to be put to use to make some SEGA Mobile games
@rjejr Mojang was basically from the PS3 era, barely into PS4. Mojang was from when WiiU was still viable. Mojang was from when we thought Naughty Dog still made games and didn't think releasing the same game twice more plus making a film adaptation would constitute the next decade of their work. Mojang was from when we thought MM wouldn't spend the next decade doing nothing but their creation game that seemed iffy from the year before that. Definitely old.
@tameshiyaku I remember that era. I actually was playing Angry Birds and other mobile games on iPod Touch at the time, and it really did feel like that was the future. Then 3DS came out and swept away that thunder. Then Vita came out and swept away that thunder....then handed it back....
I remember Patcher after the Vita E3 talking about how Vita would crush 3DS but that handhelds were doomed, the products would all fail, and mobile was the future. This was before he also predicted Switch would do great after Switch did great. I also predict that Sega will buy Rovio, and PS5 is just a fad.
Wierd era, but it kind of feels like we're heading back into it again with every major game company throwing their entire money bin at mobile right now. Seems like they're chasing the big money, and the big money is in mobile games, not traditional games. I wonder how long it is before the big companies are just all mobile, and then the indies grow bigger and form publishers and just replace the old publishers with new ones for the console/PC-game niche industry?
It's all weird timing as the biggest players are trying to move into cloud and put console games onto mobile via services that everyone's doubling down on traditional app gaming. I wonder if it's less a reaction to mobile/Apple revenue, which has always been huge, and more a reaction to Switch being the only bridge between mobile and console and being a runaway success?
@NEStalgia "when WiiU was still viable"
That wasn't a "time", that was an alternate universe. 😂
@rjejr There was a brief time where the dream was alive, Project Cars was definitely maybe coming, and Sliggy was happy. Good times.
i just don't understand why they do something like this, finaly making koney then trow 3/4 billion in the trashbin. why don't they just focus on new ip's
@NEStalgia
" PS5 is just a fad"
what makes you think that.
@PALversusNTSC No, it was a Michael Patcher joke....because he "predicted" something correctly only after it already happened, and predicted wildly successful things were "dead" (consoles were dead, handhelds were dead, mobile was the future, etc, then PS4 shot off like a rocket and Switch the handheld surpassed it.)
Sega's not throwing money away with Rovio, though, it's not about Angry birds, it's about acquiring a compitent, successful mobile studio after the biggest ones were already bought up by Take Two, Activision-then-Microsoft, and Tencent. Mobile is far more raw profit than the console/PC industry, and any of these big games giants not in mobile is just missing money. Buying Rovio isn't about getting Angry Birds into Sega, it's about getting PSO, SMT, Sonic, and casino games onto mobile.
Ok, €775 million purchase price for a company that totaled €317 million in revenue in 2022. Of the €317 million, €209.54 mil was the operating expense, and supposedly the actual profit for 2022 was €22.19. So, it’d take roughly 33.85 years just to get back to even…and ROI? Ugh. ROI is return on investment, and its formula is (profit-cost)/cost), If revenues and profits stay the same, which we know won’t happen, it’ll be quite a while before an actual return on that investment occurs.
Anyway, if Sega folds the Rovio workload into their own staff (and, umm, “relieves” some of Rovio’s 523 employees from the payroll), Sega could cut those costs down and increase yearly profit, but, bottom line, it’d still take a long, long time to make an actual profit over the €775 mil purchase price. Sega MUST have something big in mind for growing the Angry Birds franchise, because that purchase price is HUGE and could lead to financial ruin quickly if Angry Birds popularity wanes even a little.
Numbers taken from Rovio’s annual statement for 2022: https://investors.rovio.com/sites/rovio-ir-v2/files/2023-02/Rovio%20Q4-2022_interim%20report.pdf
@BAMozzy I would not put Savage games on the same plane of existence as Rovio, King or Zynga in terms of Mobile acquisitions. Lmao
@NomNom Maybe NOT the same scale of Purchase but the SAME principal and desire to target the Mobile sector. Sony themselves set up a Playstation Mobile Division - a segment that will be devoted to releasing mobile games based on big PlayStation franchises and the new division will include Sony's studio acquisition - Savage Game Studios.
Here's what Hulst said in a recent PlayStation Blog update:
"Our mobile gaming efforts will be similarly additive, providing more ways for more people to engage with our content, and striving to reach new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games. Savage Game Studios is joining a newly created PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, which will operate independently from our console development and focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP."
They also intend to have 20% (1/5th) of its releases to be Mobile based by 2025 - and 30% on PC - the other half to be Console releases.
Point is, Publishers realise that Mobile is a Massive sector and are moving towards developing 'Mobile' games. That's why Sony acquired Savage - not for any 'IP' specifically, but for their talent & expertise in the Mobile sector - having been set-up by ex Zynga employees. Its likely why Sega are buying Rovio too - not specifically for 'Angry Birds' but their talent and expertise in the mobile game development sector.
So whilst it may not be on the 'same' scale - its still the same Principal, same desire to get into the Mobile Gaming market!
@jgrangervikings1 That's Rovio 'under' its current Management and whatever IP's etc they own. But what if Sega got them porting Sonic games to Mobile? Jet Set Future? Crazy Taxi? etc and these all go on now to be 'massive' sellers for Sega that 'Rovio' couldn't have done without SEGA's ownership & IP's.
Its not a 'one' way street so to speak that Sega is only 'buying' Angry Birds and that isn't the money spinner it once was, but they are buying talent and expertise that could allow SEGA to offer their IPs on Mobile and open up a whole new market for them to sell games to and that could help them recuperate that investment much quicker.
@BAMozzy that makes sense, thanks for the breakdown. I am not a fan of mobile games and worry about this direction into this market.
@NEStalgia Sliggy = Sligearch(sp)? Totally forgot about that guy, I always think of Quorthon as the worst, but yeah, slig was pretty bad. Slig was never happy though, so you must be thinking of someone else. 😂
@BAMozzy You make a great point. Rovio has the knowledge and expertise of the mobile market, and if Sega wants a stronger footprint there, Rovio would be a company you’d want on your side.
@NomNom Yeah, Patcher's 2013 projections that consoles are "dead" and replaced by mobile clearly didn't pan out, but he technically wasn't totally wrong either. Console didn't shrink, and console players didn't just jump to mobile like he predicted, but considering the amount of global players that play "games" in general, I'd say 75% of the "gaming market" is mobile, MINIMUM.
It's now executives interpret that data that worries me. "Gamers" went from meaning a few tens of millions of console/PC players to billions of mobile gamers. And the executives interpret that to mean that mobile is the "trend" and that's where everything is, without recognizing they're looking at two totally different barely related markets and lumping them together. And they may not care, because comparing mobile to console, financially, console games are almost pointless to make. The cost is high, the return is low, and most of the "game" market is mobile. Why not put the money and manpower into mobile with a fraction the cost and an exponential return by appealing to compulsive behaviors of a mass market encompassing almost everyone including kids?
Console/PC is its own market but its finances can't really be grouped in as the same "gaming" market as mobile. I don't trust the execs in this industry to recognize that. It's like grouping Spotify in with selling sheet music for orchestras. Sure, both are the music sales business, but one market has little to do with the other. One market is much smaller and less profitable, but it's still a viable industry.
@rjejr Slig was happy until WiiU was abandoned. So he was only unhappy after WiiU launched.
@NEStalgia "Slig was happy until WiiU was abandoned. So he was only unhappy after WiiU launched."
Considering the complete lack of Wii U advertising and marketing, and Nintendo making it seem like the Wii U was the "Gamepad" that would work with people's current Wii consoles, I'd argue Wii U was abandoned before it launched. Before, during and after there was only universal abandonment. 3DS got a 30% price cut 4 months after launch to revive it, Wii U was always $300 b/c Nintendo never tried or cared. It was their last home console, they knew they were giving up and reselling every game on Switch at full MSRP b/c a handheld can't play discs. 🤑
@rjejr WiiU gave us Miyamoto in a cardboard robot suit, Reggie Fils-a-Mech and Non-Specific Action Figure though making it objectively superior to anything that's happened so far in the 9th gen unless you're into cosplaying as Gollum and paying to add the VA work later.
@NEStalgia In 10 years all of those things you mentioned people will just think came out for the Switch, or the 3DS, or the Wii. Nobody is going to associate anything w/ Wii U any more than people associate anything with PSPgo or PS 3D Display. 😂
@rjejr I thought infamy was forever?

It bombed.

The End.
Seems like a reckless purchase to me, but hopefully I'm proven wrong somehow lol...
@rjejr oh man, that last one is just sad...
@rjejr That's why you need to play on multiple platforms. If you had WiiU and Vita, you had a library of tens of games to play!
@naruball If it makes you feel any better I believe the last one was photoshopped, but I couldn't' resist. The Supreme Court Building is basically 1 big clown car at this point. 😝
@NEStalgia I have a Wii U and PS Vita TV, does that count? 😂
@rjejr With the tens of games available to your your gaming possibilities are endless!
@rjejr I know, I know, but still...
@NEStalgia On the bright side, as a Wii U owner I had almost every great Switch game to play years before Switch owners got to play it. It took TotK 6 years to break the mold. 😝
@rjejr WiiU wasn't a console, it was an Early Access subscription to play Switch games 4 years early!
@NEStalgia Switch Beta. 😝
@rjejr WiiU good. Switch beta.
Don't knock it, that's better marketing than Vita got.
@NEStalgia I can live with that.👍
Wasn't the Vita marketing "Buy an over priced proprietary memory card, get a portable gaming console for the same price"?
@rjejr PS Vita - PS in your pants!
AT&T 3G sold separately! (For checking leader boards only)
Not only did it have the overpriced memory, the cards also had a habit of failing. I had to buy 3!
@NEStalgia I had to buy 3
Making me feel good about my 3 Labo kit purchases, thanks. 😉
