There has been some criticism of Sony’s decision to continue developing cross-generation games, up until the release of even God of War Ragnarok last year. While the Japanese giant would argue that its approach has allowed more people to enjoy its tentpole titles – especially in the wake of PS5 stock shortages – early adopters believe the strategy has prevented first-party developers from wringing the full potential out of PlayStation’s new-gen hardware.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, of course, will be a full-blown PS5 exclusive – and it’s being developed by one of PS Studios’ very best teams in Insomniac Games. Speaking with Famitsu, via Google Translate, bigwig Jim Ryan said that the hotly anticipated sequel has been developed with “no compromises” for Sony’s current console. In other words, it’ll eke every inch of power out of the system, and it won’t need to worry about running on the decade-old PS4.
Ryan stopped short of sharing any specific new information about the sequel, but he did point out he’s hearing very positive feedback about it, and he described it as “beautiful”. It’s almost guaranteed we’ll get an extended glimpse of what the executive’s referring to during next week’s PS Showcase, where we fully expect the PS5 title to be one of the flagship games on display. Rumours are the superhero release will launch in September, and so we’d expect a date to be officially confirmed imminently.

4K puddles or DOA
Hopefully this playstation showcase is the end for last gen games, a showcase that's all current gen only games would be great.
About time, it's been almost 3 years into this gen and we barely have and current gen games.
If there's one game i have no fears on its Spider-Man 2 as Insomniac are in a league of their own.
Hope it's an improvement on the first 2....don't think they hold a candle to the Arkham games....defo still looking forward to this though
I'm really hoping SM2 is less ubisofty compared to the first game
@StylesT They're gettin there slowly. Especially with enemy AI in Miles Morales where they investigate their allies after not hearing them for a minute.
Not a Spider-Man fan, not really a Marvel fan in general. But i am happy to see it’s all next gen development from here on out. This game while not for me will be impressive looking. Can’t wait to see both Showcases and see the first real glimpse into what the consoles can do.
Ghost of Tsushima 2 built from the ground up for PS5 is going to be insane.
I expect no less from PlayStation's most valuable studio this gen thus far.
We need an update on Pragmata
Insomniac is Playstations work horse. They are as talented as any studio but still hit solid time frames
About bloody time!! We believe in Generations bollocks!
@UltimateOtaku91 PS4 seems to be for life so don’t discount games coming!
About time, its taken too long!
I hope there is still a 60fps performance RT mode
My issues with the first title and standalone dlc weren't based on visuals being held back.
If they double down on the core game design without refining the lackluster aspects of the open world filler, it will be a hard pass until it's in steep discount or free on subs.
However, if they utilized all that power to really craft everything with care and limit fatigue inducing repetitive side content, I may give it a go even though I think Spiderman and it's universe to be pretty lame, tame, and childish.
I don't think we are guarantee a extensive look. In fact I suspect we will get a trailer an then a extensive look at the game about a day after Xbox big show
@KundaliniRising333 Definitely. The first entry in this series was fantastic with respect to combat mechanics, story was OK as well. Everything else was tired and very outdated (we're talking open world elements that we saw all the way back in 2010 or so, probably earlier).
@Mythologue 100% agree. I honestly think their only real route to Improvement if they stick with the same map, would be to weed out a lot of that open world mundane bloat and instead to focus on indoor environments. Being able to enter buildings and have entire environments that you either have to load into or just seamlessly move into that offer variety and meaningful story content and/or tailored side quest areas that are meaningful additions rather than really really basic open world filler.
To be honest I found the original games OK. Some bits were amazing. But to much swinging around killing gangs on the ground became tedious. Would prefer more of a campaign that feels more Uncharted than a diluted open world experience. I'm expecting much the same though to be honest.
@TrickyDicky99 Poor little Timmy needs to get a goddamn job.
@AdamNovice Ray Traced puddles or we riot.
I was beginning to wonder if they would keep this stupid trend until they make cross gen PS4-5-6 games
Spider-Man was one of the few games where I didn't mind the repetitive open world stuff because I've been a fan of the character since I was a kid. I used to fire that game up simply to swing around as a form of relaxation. Your mileage may vary, I suppose.
I don't see the game map changing much as Spidey is a New York based hero and always has been. I do hope we get more indoor environments though. I like that idea a lot.
@KeldorTheCursed i'm at least hoping you can go into more buildings even if its just to find Easter eggs. not every building needs to have this , say you are running away or chasing some after some one and you see an open window and swing through the building , i think little things like that would be pretty cool.
@Grimwood rachet and clank?
The gameplay is okay on the Spider-Man games, the combat really doesn't inspire me despite feeling very fluid, but I'm super excited for the story. MM wasn't great but it was a shorter and smaller can't, but I was actually surprised and impressed at how dark the first one was. Marvel obviously is removing some of the MCU barriers and allowing them to take some creative risks.
I get that graphics aren’t everything etc etc. But sometimes after all this ‘cross gen’ excuse making stuff which has gone on for rather a long time, I really want to know there are games coming which really make me think I’m playing games in a new generation when I look at them and walk around in their world. Graphically the benchmark is actually the Plague Tale sequel. It’s only 30fps I know, and I don’t actually like the game, but when I played the trial I thought: THIS is what ps5 worlds should look like when I walk around in them!
I’m a bit worried on that front tbh. The other night I did a review of all the stuff currently on the pre-order tab of the store. I felt that most of the videos advertising these games looked underwhelming graphically. Almost all of them looked to me like they would easily have been possible on a ps4 mid generation.
I’m not actually the greatest fan of these super hero games either tbh. I always wanted to like them but find them fiddly and a little irritating. That’s just a personal preference. Regardless of that, I do think there’s a massive onus now on games like this one to REALLY deliver on the visual front as well as gameplay etc.
Less worried about how it looks than I am about whether it has those horrendous MJ missions in it again. I am not going to preorder until I know who I'm actually controlling this time.
Kind of can't wait to get over these Marvel releases and see what first party ammunition Sony have. I'll likely get this but the first one was more than enough for me really
@Fishnpeas
I think they learned their lesson. Miles Morales didn’t have any of that crap in it.
I think people forget that the plan was always to finish the cross gen aspect of the PS5 first party games for the first flow of first party. Ragnarok was delayed and thats the only reason it lasted so long, its sort of the reason why horizon dlc was current gen only.
At some point we have to leave ps4 behind, just like every other console before it.
I was never indoubt that the next lot of games were only ever going to be PS5. Thats what Sony said at the beginning.
Looking forward to what insomniac can do. Esp when they said rift apart was only the tip of the iceberg with the instant shift through worlds, cannot wait.
Wednesday cant come quick enough.
@twitchtvpat sounds good to me! I hope to play as Venom, too.
@Nepp67 Ubisoft don't OWN the whole open world genre.
@daveofduncan "down OWN"?
Are we all thinking that there actually will not be ANY PS4 games in this showcase?? I mean... I thought Cryin Ryan believed in generations... Jussss sayinnnn
@UltimateOtaku91 This is supposed to be the showcase that will incentivize non PS4 owners to finally upgrade to a PS5, so I'd certainly hope so.
I will be shocked if they reveal any brand new 1st party studio games coming to PS4.
3rd party studios are a different matter, those will probably still be pushing PS4 versions for at least 1 more year.
In my understanding, "no more compromises for the PS5" means 4k raytracing@60fps ... oh well ...
@Splat I hope the Ghost of Tsushima, Spiderman and Horizon Playstation series get full trilogies. I really enjoy them
We’ve waited far too long for Sonys first party studios to prioritise the ps5 and give us something that really pushes the hardware. So I look forward to seeing Spiderman 2…but man, if they then announce the footage is running on a ps5pro… that’s an L for PlayStation for me
@Kidfried only puddles are ones under phil Spencer 🤣
No cross gen? Gameplay is exactly the same as the first and that had combat lifted directly out of Arkham Asylum on the PS3.
Sooooo....no PS3 version then?
