In what is a shocking new direction for Final Fantasy — and the role-playing game genre as a whole — Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will have a story as well as characters. Hard to wrap your head around isn't it? But it's apparently the truth.
Square Enix has released another weird developer update on the upcoming sequel. This particular post says: "Players will witness a chain of narrative developments [...] while discovering each character's destiny."
Not everyone's as smart as we are, so we won't judge you if the terminology went over your head. In this instance, a "chain of narrative developments" means that the game will have a story. Square Enix is breaking new ground all over again, just like it did with the original Final Fantasy VII many years ago!
No, but in all seriousness, this is a strange way to promote a game. The publisher's been pumping these updates out over the last few days, but this one takes the cake. The previous update said that Rebirth will offer a "high degree of freedom", which at least sounds vaguely interesting in the context of Remake's very linear gameplay structure.
Anyway, can you believe that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will have a story? And even characters? Pick your jaw off the floor in the comments section below.

This is gene redefining right here.
Considering how beloved the OG story is and that this is the middle of a presumed trilogy?.......Yeah I like to think there's a story in there somewhere!!
Feeling like this is some sort of passive aggression on SEs part
'You didnt show any updates at the Showcase Square, you guys suck'
'oh its updates ya want? Well we will update you with EVERYTHING in the game. Every Little Thing'
'well thats kinda what we wa-'
'it has a story'
Wait what?
Characters
Wait a min..
Open world gameplay
What have we done...
The seventh update would be scheduled for Thursday at this rate… perhaps a trailer at SGF on Thursday?

No way this is true. I'll believe it when I see it 😤
Sure it's a rather low bar to beat but it feels like Summer Game Fest actually has a good chance of being better than the Playstation Showcase.
@Ken_Kaniff Square is literally in the website name. What did you expect?
Preposterous. They have no idea what they're doing with this franchise. I didn't sign up to FF for no fancy schmancy "narrative developments", please bring back the times when the series was just a still picture of a blank wall.
I actually prefer this vague teasing of the game compared to them downright spoiling the game in their FF7R trailers.
Whoa! I had no idea! That’s big news right there. Should have announced it in the Showcase
I can't believe that Push Square editors spoiled the entire game in the article title.
Wow, just wow.
The Original has had hundreds of hours on my Playstation 4..as has GTA San Andreas...and Dark Cloud...and now Harvest Moon Friends of mineral town...could do with GT4 and MGS 3 and I would be a happy bunny.....oh one more Everybody's Golf 2...nothing has come close to these games as in fun to play.
Characters in an RPG? No way. Surely they jest!
Next update will confirm the presence of pixels, magic, and moogles.
@Jayslow Don't worry, they'll still do that too!
@LionVega Funnily enough, having moogles would be a stretch 😂
So will magic be in the game? I didn’t see that in this presser.
I think what most FF7 fans are wondering is if they'll rewrite a specific character's fate.
@Uncharted2007 tbh at this stage I’m going to be surprised if they don’t.
One of the dumbest article titles ever.
That’s a bummer, I wanted a live service game with no story and mtx for every character…
Said no one ever.
@Ryall 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣☠️☠️☠️
@Uncharted2007
God I hope not.
First off Tifa is best girl. Secondly, specific character’s death was the emotional core of the original game’s story.
If they change that they had better be able to explain perfectly in the game why they made that change.
And once again, Tifa is best girl. Straight wife material.
So none of you, including article writer, has no clue that this is most likely a subtle clue that they will follow the individual story of each character from the OG with a change in the overall narrative ( hint : their destiny ). For OG fans this is great news..
@nessisonett aww don’t tell me negotiations with The United Moogle Workers Union fell through! 🤣
Aerith Is best girl! she better live this time. Also
There was always more lore and story that never got to be told because of her passing, and that sucked because she had so much to offer. I’m curious to see what Aerith and Sephiroth are up to as the two most iconic opposing characters. In the original we didn’t see much of them talking to each other, ( I enjoyed the crumbs we did get in the OG) my fave cryptic characters for sure.
@KaijuKaiser @Grumblevolcano @Jonesywvu16 I could definitely see a surprise gameplay trailer being premiered at Summer Game Fest.
Sadly don't see us getting a solid release date, but maybe a specific month at least?
Oh, thank God. I thought I was gonna play another FFXV
Amazing! The likes of CDPR, Rockstar Games and Naughty Dog could learn a lot from these guys.
I liked FF VII linear gameplay structure, not every game got to be open world. Some people get confused
You know I'm glad they cleared this up because I was 50/50 on this if it didn't have any narrative or destiny
This is very disappointing, I was hoping the sequel would be more like Tetris, all that anime stuff in the last one was very distracting.
I'm not really sure what to expect, I mean are they throwing alot of the original "2nd half" of the game or what, and it been open world is not odd, in the original it was open world after that little village Calm and some story,.you were free to travel chocobo an all, im more concerned where will the stopping point be for part 2, I.means its an epic journey all the way til " part 3" l...meaning disc 3 from original
And now dev comment #4 is up, confirming there'll be a recap movie or somesuch for "players who did not get a chance to play the first game."
@Uromastryx Obvious breakpoint would be after Whirlwind Maze, which would also give a story excuse to reset everyone's gear. Of course this is assuming that the rest of the remake project retains the general story structure of the original which is by no means certain.
@dancingstar93 yeah could be a good place I tought after Temple of the Ancients but that would be short, and leave alot for part 3, another breakpoint could be when the Ultimate weapons get released/attack on Junon.
@Uromastryx the former of those was pretty much what I went, I just didn't give details because I don't know how to tag spoilers on this site.
And yet, despite this being a total non-story, you still managed to publish an article about it.
