Square Enix’s week-long trolling exercise appears to have concluded with the vaguest Twitter update on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth yet: “More information will be revealed soon.” That it! That’s the sole confirmation from creative director Tetsuya Nomura, following previous Earth-shattering reveals about the PS5 exclusive, including the fact that it will, indeed, include music.
Some believe that this is all building up to a new trailer at Summer Game Fest, and we’d certainly agree that it would help to contextualise these bizarre and vague daily statements. But with Final Fantasy 16 approximately two weeks away, it seems like a strange strategy from Square Enix to temporarily take the attention away from that title.
All will be revealed later today, we suppose. You can find out what time Summer Game Fest starts through the link.

I don't read headlines but the picture tells me Smash is coming to PS4, PS5!
FF7 Rebirth as we thought it was going to be is scrapped. It'll now just be a side scrolling platformer using the Cloud character model from Smash Bros.
@Uncharted2007 And the worst part? It will be a game playable only through the cloud.
Wow. FFVII Rebirth not only has story, characters and music, but also gameplay?
They should just tell me if it's at SGF cause then it might actually be worth it to watch that lol
Maybe because they're reportedly worried about XVI, this is a marketing strategy to get us stirred up for a FF we actually want but can't have yet, so we'll be in a FF mood and will be like "well I can't have Rebirth yet but man am I in the mood for some FF now! Time to get some XVI!" It's a large scale version of when, ages ago, a girl's strategy to pull me was to put Transformers on and go on about how hot Megan Fox is, then ask me what I wanted to do to her (Fox). Sort of seduction-by-proxy. This feels like that, but only FFVII Rebirth is a lot sexier than Megan Fox.
is it over? shame, I was waiting for: -QUESTION- is FFXVI worth playing at all or should I wait for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH?
@Matroska I mean I've been busy with Pixel Remasters, FF7, just platinumed FF7R a second time, probably going to finally platinum FF9 after I get FF16. I don' think I need motivation at this point to play FF16 lol.
@CthulhuFhtagn Yes. No.
I'm hyped for both this and XVI but goddamn Square, let me get through FFXVI first lol.
@Triumph741 Respect. That was a perfect response.
If its not at Summer Game Fest at all then I don't know why they did all these daily tweets in a way that lead up to Summer Game Fest? What was the point.
I would imagine they're waiting until after 16, so it doesn't take any attention away from it. If the rumored second PlayStation showcase is true for later this year I imagine it will be there. Early 2024 release date
I think Summer Game Fest will answer all 7 questions in more detail so like question 1 was about release date so the end of the SGF segment it shows the specific release date (my guess would be December 7th or 14th 2023).
Free FFVII rebirth demo when you buy FFXVI. That would boost sales.
@Americansamurai1 But they've just done a 7 part countdown to today. 7 posts across 7 days ending on the very day Geoff Keighley tries to make me buy Doritos again. It would be very weird if they do nothing after that.
@NotSoCryptic Yeah. I'm playing FFIV Pixel Remaster at the moment but they're different audiences - we're the more diehard fans. There are photos on Twitter of FFXVI being discounted already in Japan, and SE are saying it's tracking behind XV even taking into account only being on one platform. The existence of expensive ROMs of FF to FFVI (that aren't even the best versions of each of the games, sadly) isn't going to help that.
Gotta find my “Press for Doubt” button… it’s around here somewhere
@Martijn87 yeah. Not that I feel it needs it, but that would be the best explanation to why they’re announcing it now.
If they are indeed worried about FFXVI sales then that would be one way to make people splurge.
I remember buying Type 0 for FFXV demo lol
@ztpayne7 yeah or the advent children complete Blu ray for the FFXIII demo.
@Matroska with square who knows we'll find out today
When I first glanced at the header image, I legit thought Cloud was coming to Fortnite lmao
Maybe the rumors about Sony holding stuff back for whatever reason are true. Imagine if we get DS2, TLOU factions and FF7 Rebirth news today, lol.
Well it won't take attention away if they like give us Rebirth release date just quickly then move on to FF16 some new end game gameplay and release of the demo tonight (2 weeks before game release)
And then some FF remaster release...hopeful I know but one can dream
@Matroska I don't get it, why would teasing me about FF7 make me want to play a new God of War game?
@Matroska there is a lot to consider with ff16. I think the three big issues it faces are the fact that the style of gameplay has shifted heavily to a more devil may cry style, which doesn't have much of an audience overlap (even I'm put off by these changes and I love action games like dmc). It ls also facing down ff15, for as well as the game did, its not a shining beacon of what to expect from the franchise and its compounded with the last single player ff before it being 13, not being lauded as a success story. FF15 was bad, I think hold outs after 13 who were hoping that Hajime Tabata could save versus 13 and give us the game we should have gotten back in 2008 as ff13 would finally arrive. Instead we got a broken mess of a game that barely resembles a final fantasy with bits and piece leaving clues about of what could have been if they hadn't chopped the game up into tiny individual cross media projects and focused on what call the area just outside of midgar. The last problem being ff14s savior isn't well known in the ff community let alone the more casual ff player who isn't aware of any of the background factors I listed above, but were still impacted by it in very negative ways.
Point I'm getting at is most people are fence sitting on this game. They aren't sure they are going to be dooped by what they are being shown and aren't sure of squares ability to deliver an action adventure game.
Not saying you're wrong, actually agreeing with you. I really think people are hyped and excited to see this game and play it, at the same time a good number of them are cautiously optimistic. I didn't even think twice about ordering the collectors edition. The reaction ff7 rebirth is getting shows people are still paying attention to the franchise. Though i wish 16 took more cues from ff7r than dmc.
Over all as it's clear at this point, I'm optimistic. I think the initial preorders will be rough, but the promise of something not openworld for once and delivering ona. Strong final fantasy story with fun gameplay might turn some heads and bring in new fans. Maybe even encourage a few of them to look back at older entries, you can almost play every ff on ps4 and 5 now. We are just missing the ff13 trilogy, revenant wings, and ff11 at this point. I'm sure we will see an ff9 remake, I would not be surprised if they play to do something with ff11 at some point.
As far as the pr. I agree mostly on them not being the best versions. 1 and 2's 20th anniversary versions on psp were better, though the boost and new functions help with ff2 a lot. FF4 complete collection is still definitive in my book and that's locked to psp also. FF3 I'm leaning towards PR being best. They fixed somethings in the ds version that were nice improvements, but oof that art style, ff3 deserved better. There is no good version of ff5, but I think I'd choose the pr even over the ps1 version. Then there is FF6, I think the opera house wins out and so does the rebalance and fixes. GBA versions were just awful, no amount of bonus content could improve those dumpster fires.
