Square Enix’s penchant for high quality, pre-rendered 4K cinematics means its games can seriously bloat in size. It was confirmed recently that next year’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will ship on two PS5 Blu-ray discs, and the same was almost true of Final Fantasy 16 – in fact, the developer was only able to squeeze the release onto a single disc in the last six months or so.
Speaking with Famitsu, as translated by Google, producer Naoki Yoshida said that the publisher was preparing to ship the game on two discs, but ultimately the team was able to bring the file size down and thus save manufacturing costs. Obviously this last-minute compression will prove a positive for digital downloaders, too, as there will be less data to pull.
Remember, despite promises to the contrary initially, you will now need to download a small day one patch. That’ll only weigh in around 300MB, though, so shouldn’t cause too many complications for the vast majority of players.

I looked at the picture first and thought "oh those discs look sweet" till I read the headline lol.
@AdamNovice I'll take your comment as a compliment for my very basic Photoshop skills!
Am I going to need to buy another drive? 😂. They should bring back those 4 disk jewel cases!
Those are some sweet disc's for sure 👍
Bummer though they should have done disc's rather than the 100 gb download this game requires now.
Can I play without the 300mb day one patch. That is the quesiton.
@NotSoCryptic If you play the game without the patch Square Enix will burn your whole neighborhood down and you have to pay for the damages.
So yeah probably.
@NotSoCryptic Yeah of course, you just won't get the optimisations that the patch includes.
Hope it didn’t impact quality or amount of cutscenes. I don’t see a problem with having two or more discs.
Some sacrifices are likely made but hopefully nothing too drastic that it affects the story elements. As for the day 1 patch, yeah it's bound to happen but not really that bad considering that it's mostly for optimization.
I can’t wait til this game comes out and I can stop seeing and hearing about it everywhere.
@PlayStationGamer3919 Pretty self-explanatory mate.
@KaijuKaiser i think it really is going to be that big
@HotGoomba I've played FF4, that's not how it works. They force you to burn someone else's neighborhood down, force you on a quest of redemption that eventually leads you to fight your own family. Personally... it might just be worth the trip to the moon honestly.
@KundaliniRising333 isn't it 300MB?
@MattBoothDev Day 1 patch is 300 meg. I'm not sure if the person you're replying to is somehow getting this game mixed up with another forthcoming high-profile title & insinuating it isn't getting a physical release at all, or what.
Serious question to you all: Why do people complain so much about having to download a day 1 patch? just download the content and thats it right? I mean yes maybe it will take a couple of extra hrs but I dont see why to complain for something like that honestly.
@MattBoothDev oh no I'm talking about the full game download. The box states require at least 100gb
@Qu1n0n3z I think it's because some people have different circumstances you know. Things such as people that have no internet or have low download limits. Not everyone is as privledged as us. Privledged to even be here discussing games and such rather than worrying about how to pay the bills or food insecurity etc.
Some may have broke the bank or saved for years to afford the Ps5, merely to enjoy some minor moments of escapism or peace amongst the chaos.
@KundaliniRising333 ?? What do you mean?
@NotSoCryptic Yeah, but apparently it fixes a progression issue or something so you may or may not have problems with finishing the game that way
@KundaliniRising333 I mean, presumably that means hard disc space once installed via the disc. The day one download is 300MB, reportedly
@KundaliniRising333 For sure and I tottally get that but I see people with none of these issues and still complaining and saying things like: “I would never support this company again”, gaming fans are really a toxic community
@Qu1n0n3z Some people are tired of gaming companies just straight lying to them like this. Square isn't the only company that does this kind of bait and switch announcement before launch, But it might be the only company to some gamers.
@Jireland92 Seriously. this site is almost as bad as the weeby fan sites like noisy pixel. The only thing push square hasn't reported on (yet) is the overpriced fan service garbage trinkets.
@PlayStationGamer3919 Never heard of a one word joke before lol.
@Cordyceps Why does hearing about this game trigger you so much? All major gaming sites are talking about it. Lmao
@Jireland92 You think it'll stop immediately after it comes out? You're so, so naive.
@AdamNovice wat?
The D1P is so miniscule it'll download before you can get a drink and use the bathroom prior to game time. If you're up to date with life and bought the digital version, it'll all be downloaded before you wake up on launch day. If you got a disc, which is nothing more than a key for the digital content, then you have no reason to complain about your poor choices.
As for the person who mentioned that some aren't as privileged, yeah that sucks, but gaming is a luxury too and not a right. We sometimes have to live with the hand we're dealt and blaming the companies is not the right course of action. As for "breaking the bank" to afford a PS5.... How is it virtually nobody knows you can use Klarna on the PlayStation Direct website? Or that numerous retailers will offer Affirm, or After pay? Or, apply for PayPal credit and use that.
@Lanmanna None are talking about it this much. Including major rpg sites.
I'm honestly grateful that it's only 1 disc, switching discs was a pain with FF7 Remake on PS4.
Definitely not looking forward to doing it all over again with FF7 Rebirth.
