This might not be a huge surprise to pundits paying attention, but the eagerly anticipated PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not be coming to PS4, Square Enix has confirmed. Again.
But let's back up for a moment. Last week, following the announcement that Rebirth would actually be coming out in early 2024, eagle-eyed forum users over at ResetEra noticed an inconsistency on the games' official website, leading some to believe the title could be coming to last-gen consoles.
In an email to GamesRadar+, Square Enix has cleared up the hullabaloo, stating that the website has been updated to reflect the "correct release information", and so it has. While this might come as disappointing news to some, Rebirth has been billed as a PS5 exclusive from the outset, and sadly this isn't a supermarket situation in which we are entitled to what the sticker says, correct or not.
Are you surprised to learn that PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy VII Rebirth won't be coming to PS4 after all? Set your expectations accordingly in the comments section below.

thats a disservice for those who only have ps4 and want to continue the story
@Savage_Joe Just think about the PS1 gamers who are getting shafted for over 20 years
We are slowly but surely putting the PS4 to bed. It's about time.
@Savage_Joe is it though? PS4 is 10 year old tech, time to move on and push the medium forward. This is the first generation ive seen hold onto the previous generation for so long
Good. No way in hell should a game of this size be held back by previous gen.
@Savage_Joe Sorry for not being able to get a ps5 3 years into the current gen.
@Savage_Joe God of War 2018 and Ragnarok should be on Ps3 then? Geara of war 3-5 on 360?
Theres loads of games with sequels and continuations of story that arent on the same console as the previous game.
@Triumph741 Naw, we got the good, uncut, original with all the great glitches, mistranslated, full game.
I'm kinda bummed that FF7 rebirth isn't coming to PS4. Especially since I bought the first game on PS4, and annoyed that I need to buy a PS5 just to continue the story. Bleh.
@SSJ3Goku You can always watch the cutscenes on youtube
Yes!!! Couldn't be more excited about finally moving forward with current gen systems. Let Cloud and Tifa's bone structure wink wink and those gorgeous, lush fields flourish on an SSD and more modern hardware.
The newest trailer make this a bit obvious.
This is great news; however, judging from 16's demo the performance mode isn't as stable as 7 Remake's. I imagine Rebirth will have dips too.
@personauser93 this is why developers don’t put out demos anymore like that because people like you.
@Triumph741 You do have a point.
Remake was already pushing PS4 pretty hard so this isn't a surprise.
@4kgk2 Are you daft? The whole concept of a demo is to give players the chance to try out a game and make an informed decision on whether to purchase it or not. I'm getting both games because I love Final Fantasy, but it's silly to say that companies shouldn't put out demos anymore because somebody might not buy the game if they don't like it.
@personauser93 he was talking about fps drops in very old demo version of the game not the gameplay fool 😒.
It's already a free PS5 upgrade for the PS4 title, the earlier game.
@Savage_Joe I don't how people expected every part on PS4. The console will be 15 years old by the time this game is finished. Imagine how much that would limit the game. We definitely wouldn't have a world map for one
@Savage_Joe Sorry but if you have troubles saving up 500 bucks over the course of a console generation and more then frankly you should worry about other things in your life than modern core gaming. Gaming is a luxury hobby and should take low priority. I had to ditch gaming a few times in my life when my finances were tight.
No surprised about this info. When current Gen consoles so widely available now and how behind on tech last gen, it’s finally time to see companies not having to spend resources or having to make a game to the lowest common denominator.
@Savage_Joe
Yes how dare Metal Gear fans had to get a PS2 to play MGS 2 after playing MGS1 on the PS1. This totally isn't how console generations have always worked.
Its great news for ps5 owners but it sucks for the ps4/pro owners who cant secure a ps5 or for some crazy reason dont want one..
Kinda obvious with the dlc being ps5 exclusive. The ps4 is almost ten years old. Console generations usually only run for 6 years, was longer due to the chip shortages. The ps5 will be 3 years this year and it's no that hard to get one these days, I get the ps5 isn't cheap as ssd 4th gen is fairly pricey ,, I image the ps6 will be the same if not not more expensive and again if a ps5 pro ever surfaces
@Savage_Joe
So the next, potentially, 5 games in the series need to all be on PS4? Come on! Everyone knows that if you want the latest games you need the latest system. This is nothing new. It’s not like PS5 is hard to find any more.
They gave the PS4 grace time during that hell l. I have the money and can't buy the PS5 because some dumb dumb thinks he can make double eats in to me game fund 😂 I was very lucky my wonderful wife got me a ps5 for the following Christmas of it's release I got a good few games there and then. My PS5 disc collection has been steadily growing. And I still get a kick out of these scalpers trying to sell at a cut 😂.
@Savage_Joe we're almost at the 3 year mark for the PS5 at this point and stock has been available in shops for about a year consistently...
@Savage_Joe
Time to move on then.
Nobody complained when MGS2 didn't come out on the PS1.
Good. May be reason for me to get a ps5 finally.
As a ps4 owner, I've missed the yuffie dlc. IF I was to upgrade to ps5 to play that, would I need to start over? Or can I import save from ps4 and just get the dlc that way? Is it only available after the game?
Came here expecting to see alot of crying and whining about it been on ps5 only, glad I was wrong, and yeah I agree 3 years now into new gen, ps4 can go to sleep quietly now
Yup, it's time to move on, onward and upward to new (now current) gen
It'd have been absolutely weird to make Yuffie's chapter PS5 exclusive only to then make the next full game cross-gen. It'd be like Horizon 3 being available on PS4 after Burning Shores already made the leap forward.
Good. I’m so sick of cross-gen releases at this point. It feels like the first 3 years (at least) of PS5 AAA releases deliberately gave us crap visuals and missing features so they could pander to the PS4 user base. Give us proper next gen titles, dammit!!!
@4kgk2 I think the reason most don't put out demos any more are 2 fold
1) They are a lot of work for the dev team
2) They often do more harm than good. Playing the intro usually isn't a compelling sell, but jumping you in mid-game is confusing and controls/systems seem complex as you haven't been slowly introduced to them. It's why some genres work better for demos
Ultimately as much as I like the idea of demos on paper there have been as many times I've played a demo of a game I was likely to buy and decided NOT to buy it. That seems good for the consumer, but occasionally I have played them years later and loved them.
This was always going to happen, only thing I was concerned about is when I want to line these games on a shelf, the boxes will be different.
Unless the next chapter is on PS6, I think I'll be okay with that.
Good ,its about time it was left behind
@KaijuKaiser sequels sticking to newer gen I can understand - it's the DLC cases that are actually odder. If you already play the base game on PS4, then it better have a cross-save with PS5 (like, say, Horizon Forbidden West thankfully appears to) or you'd be forced to start the DLC on a clean run or even replay a fair portion before accessing it (the kind of FWP I ended up facing with Ace Attorney SoJ for other reasons last year😆). Then again, perhaps FFVIIR DLC is a standalone mode in the first place?
Excellent.
This generation is only really taking off now with FF16 being PS5 Exclusive and Spider-Man 2.
Haven't had a need to upgrade yet but with these games coming out, time to put the PS4 to rest.
I might be in the minority here but I can't imagine this is going to be the boost that people expect it to be (or hope it to be). The jump from the PS4 to the PS5 is arguably the least noticeable of any console generation. I've yet to play a game on the PS5 that matches the graphics of, say, RDR2.
@Savage_Joe time to upgrade i guess.
I know you guys have this weird love affair with squeenix, but seriously you don't need to publish every water is wet article.
Normally I'd be all for current gen only, but in this case it isn't a sequel, but rather a continuation of the same game, so it is kinda crap for those who haven't upgraded yet. Also from the trailer there isn't so much of a technical jump, which I'm fine with since it should stylistically fit to part one.
Those who replied to me basically said the same thing, so I wont specify to whom. SE is giving an incomplete story to ps4 players. This is not a sequel like msg2. This is a continuation of the SAME game that they started on ps4. SE is basically saying “we gave you a game without the climax and ending. Oh you want to play the ending? I’m sorry, but you have to buy a brand new console and pay full price for that chunk of the story!”. “Time to move on”, “but you couldn’t save 500 bucks”, “we’re 3 years into the ps5”, etc etc etc. you’re all missing the point.
Sure, there are more ps5 in the wild now. But for someone who has better things to do in life, continuing to play this “remake” means paying $€570 + taxes (+70 more if the want to play Intergrade) to play an expansion of a single game, making this the most expensive dlc for them. So, yeah it’s a disservice to ps4 users. If SE could port the other parts to PC, where many still use potato GPUs, they can certainly make this “rebirth” possible on ps4…
This will be the 2nd PS5 gen only game that I'll be buying. I'm happy to finally be continuing the story after my PS1 copy wouldn't let me past the world map area from disc 1.
@MayaMousavi the same way devs still make games for an 7 yr old handheld 4x weaker than a base ps4…
@MayaMousavi 3ds games were released well after the switch came out.
To clarify. I don’t have an issue with more games being current gen only. Yeah, ps4 and xbox one should be on the graveyard soon. My issue is with this sole game that started out on a last gen console, yet, it is required to have a newer console just to keep playing the story SE intentionally left hanging. Rebirth is not a sequel, but an essential part of the Remake that you have to play for it to make sense as a whole. Those who played the first part and haven’t bought a ps5 will heavily miss out and I don’t see the fairness and justification from SE about their decision.
The third part will be PS6 only at the amount of time it takes to develop the games now. Anyone complaining about this game not being on the PS4 are they really surprised? By the time that gets completed by around 2028 do the same people complaining about this not coming to PS4 expect the next part also to come out on it?
@Savage_Joe You do know there will also be a third part too right? Should that also be in development for the PS4 even though it probable wont come out until 2028 at the earliest? They have made a decision to cut off developing their newest games on the last generation of hardware now the current hardware is more readily available.
@MayaMousavi “ were there any first party or big games on 3ds after the launch of switch? yeah no because nintendo moved on there were just some minor games from third parties like how some third parties are still making ps4 games”
Let’s see:
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World
Hako Boy! Hakozume Box
Mario Sports Superstars
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Ever Oasis
Hey! Pikmin
Metroid: Samus Returns
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
Style Savvy: Styling Star
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Kirby: Battle Royale
Mario Party: The Top 100
Bye-Bye BoxBoy!
Kirby's Blowout Blast
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe
Detective Pikachu
Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers
Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido
WarioWare Gold
Luigi's Mansion
All of those games made by Nintendo released after the switch was announced and way after launch.
I came to pile on the @Savage_Joe bashing but decided that they just may have a point. This is not the next final fantasy game it's essentially Disc 2 in a complete game.
It would be like going to a movie theater and watching the first half of a movie all normal with your current eyes and then being told that the second half uses a new technology and you need to upgrade your eyes to the next generation of oculars in order to watch it.
Especially since I predict a "Complete Edition" with both game included in time for Christmas
@MayaMousavi
...And somehow that's better. The way you say it sounds like even more of a scam.
@Mythologue At last someone that says what I think..your not alone..I am skipping the Enhanced PS4 and waiting for PS6 by then the whole FF7 remake will be out.
Got so say I have seen some slightly rude/condescending comments which is what I'd expect from twitter.
I would say in defence of @Savage_Joe
A) This game is literally another part of the same game that launched on PS4
B) FF7 Remake ran perfectly fine on PS4 and I am pretty sure this is the same game engine
C) Just because someone cannot afford a PS5 or might not be ready for one, you shouldn't gatekeep and say they should focus on other things.
The only game that I have actually needed a PS5 for is FF16 because they decided to go next gen only but pretty much every single other new AAA game up until now has been available on PS4 and worked fine. My next most anticipated game is Enternights - a PS4 game.
I'm lucky enough to be able to get a PS5 but I am certainly not going to begrudge what is still a reasonably large PS4 player base the opportunity to play a game on a game engine that we know can run on a PS4 to a decent standard.
@MayaMousavi
It's OK, I mean nothing personal. No need to get defensive. It's kinda like when Peter Jackson took The Hobbit novella and turned it into three, three-hour movies. Maybe FFVII being split this way is a good thing and maybe not. One thing we do know for sure is that those who only own a PS4 will never know.
@personauser93 To be fair, the demo is v1.01 whereas the most recently shown trailer footage is 1.03 so it's had two patches since then. There's not really much else they could be tweaking at this stage apart from performance so it should be better. I didn't have any problems myself, incidentally, other than I think it did drop to 50 something at a point where you have a dynamic lighting thing hovering by you.
@MayaMousavi It is strange. I'm also not sure how they still don't have a PS5. Everyone I know that wants one has one and had no problem getting it. They didn't even realise it was meant to be hard to find as they don't go on gaming sites. It's in stock on Amazon now, just checked. If money is the issue, you could've saved something like £3 a week and would now have enough to buy it. I'm poor as **** and managed to get one at launch.
@MayaMousavi
Chill dude. These are just examples used to illustrate some similarities in the situations. In fact, I don't have any real reason to care about this topic anyway. I actually came here to troll @Savage_Joe but it already looked like a million Square fanboys and girls brought out the pitchforks, so I took @Savage_Joe 's side instead. Nothing more nothing less. i just like a lively discussion.
@MayaMousavi
I sometimes sound too sarcastic for my own good. I like to push buttons so I apologize for being a d**k too. Cheers!
And thanks God for that! Leave the 8th gen behind. It started to feels like an old-ex you just can't cut out of your life. Bye Felicia!
Looking forward to finally playing the full game in 2028 I would guess. Will probably buy the PS6 version.
When the yuffie dlc was announced in 2020 Square at that time said anything relating to ff7 remake would be ps5 only going forward y people r still thinking its coming to ps4 I don't know y 🤔

@GilgaDevil i have a ps5… so it’s not a “Me” problem. Try to read better my comments before passing judgment 🤷🏻♂️

@Savage_Joe I'm willing to bet this new FF7R game will do a lot to distinguish itself from Remake on PS4. Fundamentally, you think of it as one part of a full product, but I think Square-Enix developed Remake to be a relatively self-contained and satisfying experience in its own right (which is probably why they tossed in that ridiculous boss battle near the end, to give it a sense of finality). Remake was less "Disc 1 of 3," and more "Star Wars Episode IV."
While I'm mildly disappointed I won't have access to the sequel at launch, I also realize that technology and game development need to move on, and PS5 owners really need exclusive experiences to call their own. If I feel a need to play it badly enough in its launch year, I'll grab a PS5.
@GilgaDevil you are new and already bad mouthing….
@Arnna @Andy22385 @AsterZero @PeakUnagi @Danfromumbrella @Vivisapprentice @Splat @KaijuKaiser
Oh 100% agreed! Time for us to ditch PS4 and only release games on PS5 now. Hopefully e3rd party devs/teams will ditch PS4 by Mid to Late 2024.
absolute stab in the back after i pre-ordered Pt 1 on PS4. Canceling this on PS4 also canceled any further interest I have in this project. sorry not sorry.
@Savage_Joe agree and concur with original post.
