Star Ocean The Second Story R, the previously leaked remake of PS1’s legendary 1998 JRPG, has been officially announced – and it’s coming to PS5 and PS4. This one adopts an impressively bold artstyle, building on the legacy of the original by retaining its sprite character models but overhauling the pre-rendered backgrounds to modern standards. The result is quite a striking look. There are also new character illustrations by Yukihiro Kajimoto and a rearranged soundtrack by original composer Motoi Sakuraba.
The press release reveals: “[The game] has been revitalised with a charming 2.5D aesthetic that combines beautiful 3D environments with nostalgic 2D pixel characters, offering players both a classic RPG and modern gameplay experience. Players can expect to find some of the original features that made the original release so memorable alongside brand-new gameplay features including fast-paced, real-time combat and battle mechanics to strategically defeat foes, customisable party progression with an array of skills – including Cooking, Art, and Metalcraft – and more.”
Importantly, the game will also include a trio of difficulty tiers, including Universe Mode which is designed for veteran fans to get a significant challenge. Pre-orders are available now, with bonuses including a bunch of in-game items and gear. There’s also a Collector’s Edition, exclusive to the Square Enix Store, which bundles in a soundtrack and art book, and houses it all in a limited edition case. All versions of the game will release on 2nd November, 2023.

That looks so good. I loved SO2!
I won't buy the collector's edition for 209.99€ because I would feel like stealing from Square Enix since it's such a low price tag.
This looks stunning. And physical too this time around? SE seem to be learning!
Looks really good. Consider myself intrigued.
I honestly don't like this style as much as Octopath or the Live A Live remake
Looks great, and getting a physical release also. PS5 copy for me.
There's something off about this implementation of the HD-2D aesthetic. In that first pic, it looks like giant low res cardboard cutouts have been placed in a village. Normally the pixellated sprites and environment blend well to give a kind of FFVI, Romancing Saga 3 or Seiken Densetsu 3 kind of look. This just looks odd, like a realistic-ish PS3 RPG town with giant standees in it.
Now this is how you do HD2D. I love having 3D environments with 2D sprites. It's just so charming. Now we have all the Star Oceans on PS5!
I would've been happy with port of Second Evolution R from PSP.
That's been out in Japan already for years...
This new thing looks like it was Frankenstein-ed together.
That's a fascinating turn on the HD2D art-style. I don't feel like it works as well as Octopath/Live-A-Live/Dragon Quest III, but it's definitely eye-catching.
I'm pleasantly surprised that a physical release is actually happening! The new look works for me, can't wait!
This great I was actually expecting like just an HD port, not a full-on remake. Plus its physical another shocker.
@Matroska Maybe in the pics but the video shows it looks just fine to me.
This looks amazing.
ooooohhh yess!! man that game was a masterpiece. The multiple characters paths, and all the obscure hidden stuff that makes a sort of postgame.
that music too... that game was so gooood!
ill go back at it for sure.
"Bold visual style" I think you misspelled bad visual style.
This is the first time I think the 2DHD doesn't do the game justice, and in fact, makes it looks worse than the original.
That looks downright bad. Those sprites do not fit those backgrounds at all, that looks terrible.

This went farther than i expected. Combat upgrades as well, which are the aspect that aged the most in these games. It looks amazing. A must buy for sure. What an unexpected new way to revive a classic.
Need Xenogears like this next squeenix.
@KaijuKaiser Totally agree. I've argued with him in the past also.
octopath traveler's implementation of 2d/3d looks a lot better in my opinion. the high res backgrounds of star ocean 2r are simply too relastic next to the sprites, which makes for a jarring aesthetic. having never played star ocean 2 to completion, i would be happy to give this one a look nontheless.
SO2 was totally my favorite! So it’s great to see this on Switch, especially with a physical release.
this game was way ahead of its time, combat system was great imo, many many endings. a ton of characters you can find and have them join your party , making so many different party combos you can have.
I think unlike the psone version, the 3D graphics in this game is too good compared to the 2D characters graphics, so the 2D graphics stick out more. But I like star ocean 2nd so if this version is good, I'll be playing this.
@KaijuKaiser while I do agree the individuals you mentioned are extremely negative and partially hold pathological grudges (f.e. every time cyberpunk 2077 gets mentioned ). The comment here wasn't that bad and focused on the art style.
I think it's okay, but by no means a triangle strategy, live a live or octopath. However, it's still better than Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song remaster, sheesh.
I'm loving this thank u square now remake integrity and faithlessness cuz that game needs a do over 😉
I am literally so incredibly excited for this! I’m a huge Star Ocean fan, and I love every game in the series, but Star Ocean 2 has always been my favorite in the franchise. Star Ocean: The Second Story was one of the first video games I played, so naturally I have a lot of nostalgia for it. I replayed that game quite a few times. But it’s not just the nostalgia that causes me to love it. Star Ocean 2 is also just a great game in general.
I’ve been hoping for a remaster for several years now. Japan has had a PS4 port of the PSP version of the game since 2015, and I have been hoping for some version of Star Ocean 2 to make it to modern platforms here in the west for quite a long time now.
Now, it looks like my prayers have been answered. This looks absolutely beautiful! It’s not a direct remaster like I had imagined when the logo leaked a few days ago, but it’s something even better. It looks like a wonderful remake of Star Ocean 2 that remains very faithful to the original game while modernizing certain details in the design. I am so incredibly hyped for this!
And the best part is that once this releases, all of the mainline Star Ocean games will finally be available to play on PS4 and PS5! This is a miraculous dream come true for a longtime Star Ocean fan like me!
It's so tacky, and I love it!
Haha bold style indeed, now it has my attention. Although, it was always going to get my attention. It looks experimental, but it has to happen to something, and it might just as well be this.
I still think the journey SE (and Tokyo RPG Factory to some extent) took from The 4 Heroes of Light to Bravely Default 2 was a superb example of how wobbly experiments can pave the way to something great.
@Kidfried interestingly, neither Square, or Tri Ace are developing this game. It's actually GEMDROPS. But I agree, looks great.
@KaijuKaiser absolutely. i have the psp "remaster" as well which might be the route i go with this.
I almost beat the PSP remake when I was younger, but never got around to it. I was really close too, like a few rooms before the final boss.
Definitely interested in playing this newer PS5 remake, but may not be paying full price.
