The existence of a Star Ocean: The Second Story remake, called Star Ocean: The Second Story R, has been leaked, not by a data miner or a leak-happy insider but instead by Square Enix's own Support Centre website.
Since removed, the leaked logos (with a Japanese variant) were caught by Gematsu and can be seen below. Originally released on PS1 in Japan in 1998, Star Ocean: The Second Story came to the West the following year. An enhanced remaster of the game was released in 2009 (2010 in the West) called Star Ocean: Second Evolution on PSP. This version came to Vita and PS4 in Japan but has not yet made the jump across the pond.
The first game in the series, Star Ocean: First Departure received a similar treatment in the form of Star Ocean: First Departure R, coming to PS4 in 2019, so perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised. Are you a fan of the franchise? Are you excited to see the sequel get the remake treatment? Slip your moors and cast off into the endless ocean that is the comments section below.

@swagbag7 Aside from the spin off games blue sphere and Anamnesis yes pretty much.
Is the first from Sega CD available on PS4/5? I never got around to playing it.
EDIT: Disregard. I was thinking of Lunar.
I'm so glad they haven't abandoned the series despite lackluster sales. It's pure camp but I love it.
Aaaaaaaaand Square Enix continues to be allergic to remastering my all-time favorite tri-Ace game: Radiata Stories.
@Uncharted2007 I wouldn't be surprised if the localized versions of the first two Lunar games are in some sort of semi-permanent legal limbo given the company that published them overseas went under back in the 00s. It's a real shame.
There have been some remakes and attempts to revive the series, but they all sucked. Even Silver Star Harmony on the PSP was disappointing.
I played (and finished) star ocean the second story way back on psone, I think that game is the best star ocean games
Alright, that's the last one I needed to have a full set. Square's done a pretty good job at getting their old games remastered for modern consoles. Still need a Final Fantasy 13 collection and a bundle of the FF tactics games.
So your headline says remaster..In Article says remake..Which is it..
I might have to get round to playing the first 2 games now. Up to now I've only played Til the end of time
I am here for it. Day 1 buy for me.
@TheLotteryMan1 It will most certainly be a remaster like first departure. Tri-Ace released Star ocean 5 last year. A full fledged remake would take more than 6 months of work.
@NEStalgia I got brave and picked up Integrity and Faithlessness for $10 last week. It's the only main entry I've never played. I'm kinda scared, though. Lol
I am a fan of most square enix games and i would love to see a remake/remaster of Bahamut Lagoon. I had a PAL converter cartridge for my SNES so I could play JP/NTSC games. Funnily enough, Japanese games is how I learned to read and understand the Japanese language.
@SplooshDmg Oh. That one. So...I mean...I bought Balan Wonderworld. So you don't need to feel that bad.
It's not horrible. Ok I mean it's horrible but it's not that horrible... Seriously though excluding the newest game, it was actually IMO a jump ahead in terms of the combat feel from earlier games. It's just that there's nothing else there. It feels more "modern" to play than any other entry. It's just a shame it's a hollow environment, with some of the most PS3 navigation and movement ever despite being a PS4 game.
@NEStalgia Well, I guess in reality, it did also release on PS3 in Japan only, so really, I'm sure there had to be some design choices to accommodate that. I'm gonna check it out sooner or later. I'm a total Star Ocean Stan, so I might even hold my nose and finish it, just to say I did.
@NEStalgia Yeah, they always feel like real adventures whereas some JRPGs feel like you're just hiking around while fighting animals (and as much as I liked the story, lore and characters, FFXVI so far is just being teleported between battle arenas and cutscenes.) I like how some have mutually exclusive characters and various endings for them.
the second story remains the only noteworthy entry in the franchise. nice to see it being ported over.
Nice definitely gonna be buying this
@SplooshDmg I think you might maybe have a good time with it. It's easily the worst overall game of the entire series, but also is offset by feeling much more modern than most other entries. IDK, it's an awkward entry. I don't hate it, and I don't love it. I did hate it at launch though lol.
@Matroska Exactly! I think that sense of adventure is the big thing (coupled with solid combat) that defines those memorable games that hold up with age. For all the jank and budget, SO really nails that part. Even if the older ones sometimes feel like one of those budget 70's sci-fis with puppets lol.
I've never really gelled with the SaGa styled JRPGS that are really just all about combat systems and stat management without the sense of adventure. I think that's kind of where Bravely Default and Octopath 1 fall flat for me, they seem to miss most of the adventure and focus really on battle mechanics alone (BD does do the adventure thing, sort of, great characters, but very shallow world.) Octo1 I played the demo and was beyond hype for what looked like it opened into an epic adventure, and then was really disappointed with the game that it's kind of just a battle mechanics boss rush without that much adventure. I bought the collectors kit with the popup book and everything for that one so I was pretty deflated. I'm hoping 16's demo just suffers from prologue-itis and becomes an adventure later on rather than just remaining bayonetta on steroids. It needed a DQ11 size demo I think.
Probably the best star ocean game and actually worth checking out for fans of the genre.
This is a miracle! I’ve been hoping for a remaster of Star Ocean 2 for several years now! I’m a huge fan of the Star Ocean series, and I have great appreciation for all of the games in the series. That being said, Star Ocean: The Second Story was one of the first games I played. As such, Star Ocean 2 is a very special game to me that is near and dear to my heart. I really hope this logo leak turns out to be real. Based on the looks of it, I think it just might be. If so, then this is truly a miracle!
Star ocean 2 was one of the best rpgs of all time , I sunk in so many hours for it and sadly didn’t end up finishing it. I would love a remaster / remake
officially announced at nintendo direct out november 3rd
@swagbag7 Now would definitely be the best time to dive in! The spinoffs aren't that significant, so they can stay lost on older platforms.
